  1. What experience do you have?
  2. Does look herring like, but most of the herring we get in the Hawkes are more "fish shaped" not long like that
  3. Link to the report here https://www.royallifesaving.com.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0010/20260/RLS_NDR2017_ReportLR.pdf Had a quick flick through but yet again it proves that rockfishing is a fairly safe activity if compared to swimming at a beach!. 9 rockfishing deaths in Australia compared to 50 at the beach, 23 while scuba/snorklelling , 38 boating etc etc. Same results year in year out unfortunatly
  4. Know a certain charter operator who has twin Suzi 90's on the back of his boat with more than 8000 plus hours and bugger all servicing and bugger all problems. I also know someone who let their 115 Suzi sit in a shed unused and had terminal rust problems in the cylinder head- so go figure, personally would buy one without any hesitation along with any of the Japanese motors(I run a Yamy 100 on my boat)
  5. Yep know that and knew it- still made a stuff up that could have ended much worse!
  6. Had one a couple of years back coming up to the trace very green in fairly rough seas. I was caught up in keeping the boat moving forwards and grabbing the leader and my son was on the rod in the stand up harness. the fish was a fairly big striped marlin of 80-90 kgs and had come up to the boat after about 10 minutes on 24kg. Anyway I grabbed the leader and was being stretched over the side , my son was yelling at me "should I go free spool?" and for some very dumb reason I said yes. Because of the rough seas I had to dump the leader and the fish shot out the back of the boat, the reel backlashed and my son was pulled off balance past me to the stern. I grabbed him as the fish greyhounded away and the 150lb leader snapped like a gunshot. I had nightmares about that one for a couple of months- got the whole thing on the GoPro and i couldnt actually watch the footage for about a year. Big fish need to be respected and its easy to stuff up even when you are methodical and prepared- which most of the time I'd like to think i am- still buggered if I know why i said yes to my son wanting to freespool!
  7. From the north every spot I know land based; Palm Beach Ferry wharf, Barranjoey ocean side of headland, North Whale, South Whale, Wharf at avalon down the back of Pittwater (forgotten name), North Curly, Bluefish , Harbord rocks , Manly Ferry wharf and surrounds plus rocks towards gasworks, Balmoral "island" and wharf Clifton Gardens and that will do
  8. Most wharves have them, most of the deeper rock fishing spots have them and so do quite a few of the shallower ones- tell us where you are fishing and I can try to be more specific
  9. Gees that brings back memories for me, caught about 8 billion tailor off there as a teenager bobby corking and spinning with wonder wobblers and it was back in the 80's. There are no rules preventing fishing there, the local council tried to ban fishing from the beach a few years ago but it didnt stand up in court as they have no juristiction over the area below high water
  10. the simple answer to that is-Reason not to buy that boat!"- gees mate you are finding some beauties out there!
  11. As i said, the baitstation is not really a "spot' its a general area in 70-90 fathoms in between the 12 mile and Broken Bay
  12. The bait station is the area just inside the shelf north of the 12 mile- its not a spot as such but a general area where we get a bit of bait at times. Personally pulled more striped marlin out of their than anywhere else off Sydney- so its an area I like to work

    Boat cover

You spent a whole lot of money buying a damn nice boat- why skimp on a crappy cover, a good custom cover will be in the vicinity of 2K and will just about last forever. Mine is 5 years old and still looks like new, it keeps the boat clean in the driveway, breaths - so no mould builds up etc- I also got a travel cover done for the console of the boat so it stays safe and clean while towing (boat is a center console)
  14. Yep def happened was listening in to the action on 21. Unfortunately for me i was fishing alone, had no game gear on board and because I was just fishing inshore only had half a tank of fuel . Sounded like a hot bite for about 2 hours , the guy who found them was good enough to call boats in - so well done to him!
  15. 20lb is plenty for legal fish with a bit of 30-40lb leader. Bigger ones need a bit more grunt
  16. Unfortunately Luke, in general manufacturers have very little say as to what goes on the back of their hulls, most good builders tend to be horrified by underpowered boats as usually what happens is the customer starts blaming the hull for its poor performance. Dealers are the ones mainly responsible plus the general attitude of the buying public thinking that they are getting a great deal! Most builders I have spoken to about hull warranty claims reckon that 99% of problems are due to poor trailer set ups anyway- again the dealer cutting corners or not knowing their job. Its not easy for the newbie boat buyer out in the marketplace
  17. Underpowering your boat will lead to MORE fuel being used- you will constantly have to be on the throttle to keep it on the plane , spin the motor harder to get it on the plane etc.You will burn more fuel with a bigger engine if all you do is run flat stick all day but at sea that is close to impossible- I have a smaller boat that your with a 100Hp and would use slightly less than 1 lt per NAUTICAL MILE not KM which is about 1/2 the fuel you are using! Safety can also be a factor . As for why dealers do it- its because when they whack a "boat show special" or "package" together they can offer at a much lower price than a properly set up boat.
  18. For?Ive got 2 Saragosa's a 600o for light work and a 10000 for downrigging kings both damn nice, have only played with a slammer in the local shop- it felt nice too
  19. All boats can broach if they are driven badly and most stories about "a certain make of boat being prone to broaching" are only true to a certain extent. The heavier the boat the less likely and design (pointy bow)can have an effect but essentailly you can broach a boat by letting a following wave catch up with you, this causes the stern to move faster than the bow and hey presto- the boat broaches. Most broaching situations can be eliminated by trimming the bow up in a following sea and picking the right speed for the sea state - which you will only achieve by trial and error- get to know your boat and how it handles. Unless you are planning on boating in "perfect storm" type conditions the most likely cause of a broach is the driver stuffing up. My current boat is a fairly broad shouldered "semi plate tinny" and I can generally "set and forget " in a moderate following sea but I know my boat and have been driving tinnies in open waters since the age of 15- dont be scared off by what you read on the "interwebs".
  20. Go and hop into Windsor Bait and Tackle's youtube videos and also the South Creek Bass Club f'book page. Bass turn up in some amazing places including under the M7 bridges , the sewer works dont seem to worry them. Google earth is your friend. Other wise if you access to a canoe the Nth Richmond bridge is an excellent start point
  21. Just be careful with this one- A permit is required at some of the stocked dams in Qld- saltwater and most fresh is fine
  22. take it for a run- that engine should spin out to around 6000rpm. My guess is that it is underpowered, contact Carabeen and ask them- they are a long established manufacturer in Australia
  23. perfectly legal- perfectly dangerous when a mako turns up
  24. Deepwater with a nasty shore dump- not your classic beach formation normally- does hold whiting /dart /tailor at times
