yes, at the moment it's all Port Jacksons...

  2. As per what has been said, there is some good Alvey combo's to start you off. I recently grabbed the new lighter graphite composite ROD6500 Beach King rod, which did the job on some decent Salmon, and tangling with some of the big port jacksons out there at the moment...most Alvey rods are hollow glass, but there is some new lighter graphite composites out there at the moment. 12ft rod (keep in mind, Alvey reels suit low mount rods) and a 600 or 650B reel and you're sweet for many years fishing off the beach for the species you mentioned (Tailor, smaller Jew) My 650A is 12 years old and still looks like new.
  3. I had to giggle a little re your key situation, reminds me of when I launched my boat with a mate at Botany Bay early in the morning a few years back, headed out to Molineaux Pt, dropped anchor, and then my mate realised he left the tackle box with all our hooks, sinkers, lures back at his house......it was the first and last time I'd ever go fishing again without having my rods pre-rigged and ready to go before launching.
  4. Should be some Salmon around. I was out about 2 weeks ago and they were there in good numbers. Could be some Tailor around too, the odd one caught here and there....Port Jacksons after dark. S.
  5. Damn! I went out with a mate yesterday morning in the Bay looking for the Salmon at the Heads but we missed them completely, seems they were slightly South of our location going by your report. We knew they would be out ther somewhere. S.
  6. It might be 1.5M in some areas, even more, and on the same beach on a protected corner of same beach it can be under 1M. For example if you fish a Southern side of a long beach with a big headland on the South of it, chances are it's protected from Southerly winds, swell etc. If you live close to any particular beach, it's worth checking out conditions beforehand. If you don't live close and drive out to a beach and find big seas, check out the protected corners of the beach etc. S.
  7. It's Salmon city all over the beaches at the moment, and the Port Jackson's have moved in after dark in big numbers...yeah, maybe try some other beaches but I reckon those Sambo's won't be too far behind you .
  8. Nice Tailor, pretty good fun and eating at that size, come up a treat smoked. S.
  9. I love my 650A's, B's and 700A5...throw in a collection of low mount glass and graphite composite rods and I'm a very happy beach fisho. S.
  10. You shouldn't need much drag with the Salmon, are you holding your rod or leaving stationary in rod holder? Salmon will inhale a pilchard and if you are coming back with mangled pillie it's probably pickers or crabs which are out there at the moment... S
  11. Nice little unit mate .
  12. Nice work mate, got to love it when the beach Sambo's come out to play...they are a lot of fun and give the gear a nice workout in the winter months.
  13. Some of the biggest whiting I have ever seen off the beach have come off the beach at night whilst fishing for Jews. My brother caught two big mothers in winter last year on 8/0's snelled with big squid baits.
  14. A couple of months later.... ....I am more a denizen, lurking in the deeper waters lol. Happy B'day Fishraider. S.
  15. With some spare time up my sleeve I went to Balmoral today and Manly headlands and the water looked like Nescafe Blend 43....Your not wrong about the rubbish, along the foreshore's it was disgusting.
  16. I remember some of these CDB stores well, my folks ran a milk bar on the lower end of George St back in the mid 80's, and I used to walk around town a lot. I was only young, didn't know my fishing stuff too well, but would sticky beak at some of these stores. The one at Central used to be under the railway line if I'm correct next to the main road...I remember being in the car and always looked out for it when driving past in the old man's car lol.
  17. @ fishingphrase - sorry we've hijacked your thread, but your post brought back some good memories for a lot of us .
  18. You aren't wrong about Harbord Tackle, I was a teenager living in the inner west back then, and going to Harbord Tackle was a trip I'd spend weeks organising my one of my old fishing pals...we were like two young kids walking into a candy store when we'd arrive...pockets full of our hard earned cash ready to give away .
  19. yes remember it...so many shops around back then...Hellraiser in Hurlstone Park, Bluefin at Kogarah, Harbord Tackle just to name a few...
  20. Was Steve's shop in Malabar? I can't recall.
  21. That's a classic video, I remember watching that back in the early 90's...the whole Fish International series was quite good.
  22. agree, but I'm still happy with the lo-stretch mono's out there on the Alvey, and too be honest when washing up a heavy fish, I prefer that my line will stretch a little.
  23. Re Mono vs. Braid, I think it comes down to a personal preference. I know some gun Jew guys (surf) who swear by braid these days as they feel a lot more connected to what is going on pre and during the battle .
  24. Hi mate, for my Alvey's I use a combination of the following: Tortue, Platypus LoStretch, Schneider and Momoi (Jap). I've also used the cheap Jarvis Walker line range in the past and highly rate it too, never let me down. Just need to keep the gear in good order, wash down in freshwater after each trip and stored in dry, cool locations etc. Cheers, Spiro
