Hi Steve, I ordered a 2pce, low mount for Alvey. It's in original orange colour, and original Snyder stamps, so looks great. I will probably use with 9kg line, targeting more Tailor, Salmon off the surf, but also a great Mulloway stick too off the surf. I don't fish rocks, but this would be a sensation Snapper rod off the rocks I imagine.

  3. There's quite a few Surf Fishing books around, look out for them on-line, also try and locate a DVD called Surf Tactics (Victoria), it has a wealth of info on there... Here's two pics I found online...gutters running parrallel to beach (notice whitewater shallows + deeper blue gutters) + hole:
  4. where to start mate.......landbased, Blues Pt Sydney harbour is worth a shot, Pittwater and Hawksbury are more boat propositions in my opinion......
  5. Some excellent info in these posts: I am a big fan of Geoff Wilson’s assessment of Mulloway fishing This opening paragraph on a book he wrote about Mulloway fishing sums it up beautifully for me…. “Most people who go fishing are unlikely to catch a large Mulloway. This is because Mulloway, particularly large Mulloway, are difficult to catch. To have a realistic chance of catching a big Mulloway, it is important to target them specifically, at least for a period of several months, putting aside your other fishing pursuits while you do so….” And there's this classic line: " What often happens, is that the angler who, after reading something along these lines, sets out to fish for big Mulloway. He goes to the trouble of either catching his squid, or other fresh bait that day, arrives on a location to find other anglers are catching Salmon, Tailor, or whatever, and abandons the big Mulloway project altogether to get into the action........This angler is not ready for Mulloway fishing..." If you ever come across his book called Bream, Flathead & Mulloway And How To Catch Them, I highly recommend anyone wanting to catch Jewies grabs it, as the Mulloway section alone is excellent with words of wisdom and puts it all into perspective, Mulloway fishing that is, coming from a fishing legend with quite a few big Mulloway under his belt, let alone all the knots he’s shown us… Cheers, Spizza
  6. Anyone watch the Barefoot Adventurer last night? Awesome Jewie breakwall footage...

  7. I haven't been there for a while now due to the crowds, but I rate it as th best land based spot in Sydney Harbour. I've caught kings, jews, Salmon and Bonito from this wharf....not to mention all the other usual wharf suspects. Get on the wharf just as the sun is poking it's head out in the morning, and you have a good chance for some Kings. From my experience you only have about half an hour window of opportunity during sunrise to nail the kings, who will take pillie fillets, prawns and squid strips off the pylons....suspend your bait midwater, and don't anchor on the bottom. Kings are usually sitting midwater around the wharf. After sunset, this is a great Jewie spot (and Bull Sharks)....more the schoolie size. Catch some yakkas before the sun goes down, and launch them out live after dark... Cheers, S.
  8. It's not complicated, it's more a matter of building experience, especially if you plan to go offshore fishing in a kayak. Check out Yakass, - check out his awesome offshore footage from the Nth Coast etc. http://yakass.net/. cheers, Spizza.
  9. Hi mate, Are you new to kayak fishing? The reason I ask is because whilst it's a lot fun, it does take a lot of practise (build experience), and safety is paramount, especially once you near the heads and go out beyond. I have a Hobie Revolution (pedal), and whilst I've been kayak fishing now for about 5 years, I still feel like a novice at times. As pointed out in the other post, a lot of offshore kayak fisho's use paddle kayaks (such as the Stealth range), and of course the pedal Hobie range. The Adventure is probably the best of the Hobie bunch for offshore work.... I consider myself very fit, I train regularly (weights, cardio) and it's amazing how fast your legs pump with blood and lactic acid, niggly joint / music pains (e.g. sitting on butt) after a few km's of pedalling around the estuaries, let alone the Ocean. Throw in a Tuna or Marlin and things go to the extreme . I had a 10kg Jewie tow me around the Bay a year ago, so can only imagine what a tuna or Marlin can do. Personally I would also never head offshore alone. Capacity wise, if you are 90kg, and the Adventure is rated to 160kg, you should be fine with all the extra gear, and The Adventure is a very slick outfit and quick, which is what you want offshore. Check out the other sites mentioned with the Hardcore kayakers, and there's a ton of additional info there and you can get some kayak buddies along the way. Cheers, Spizza
  10. Nice work mate, that's a special fish . Cheers, Spizza
  11. Wouldn't surprise me, there's been reports past and present of 10+kg kings caught right off the beach in front of the Lakes entrance by Jewie fisho's at nights. Cheers, S.

    Beach fishing

Bennoz has pretty much covered it, and your fishing gear needs extra tender love and care on the sands, especially if you use eggbeater reels (I only fish with alvey's on the surf). Try and keep your reel away from the Saltwater and sand. I always take my beach gear into the shower with me after a surf session, and rinse everything down and wipe dry after finishing (this includes hooks, sinkers, swivels etc.). Lightly spray your reel with Inox, and even canola spray from a can is brilliant for hooks etc... I have seen lot's of guys go beach fishing and then go home and throw their expensive gear in the garage corner full of sand, ready to use for their next sessions... Good luck, Spizza
  13. looking out for a Snyder Glas S177 (7W) 'Regal'...apparantely Wilson will be releasing soon...

  14. Very true, I have also experienced this regularly off the runways fishing of a boat and my kayak and after a plane has hovered over the top for landing etc...
  15. I caught one at night off the Kyeemagh breakwall back in the middle of winter in the early 90's, but haven't heard much about them appearing in the Bay for many years. As you said, they were apparentaly around in the 70's and 80's in some of the deeper areas around the Ports area of the Bay. Cheers, S.
  16. You have a nice set up there for anything from whiting, dart to bream, Tailor and Salmon ...you'll have fun with that outfit vs. a fat winter Salmon ....With Alvey's, Playtpus is great, and I prefer the Lo-stretch series, which is better off in the surf conditions where you want to minimise any stretch in the line. Cheers, Spizza
  17. Hi Dave, If you are going to fish rocks as well, look into the MT7144 range and even an 8wrap. 7144 will be suffice for the surf, but getting onto rocks the 7144 will be inferior for say Kings. You'll need something with more brute on the stones. Given you are using an Alvey, ensure you are looking at the 'low mount' reel seat surf rods. Wilson make a nice range (Au series + Live fibre), and if you want something in the high range, check out some of Gary Howard's surf custom range, the Bull Dog 15kg 14ft outfit is amazing, but I believe they only come in 1 pce at the moment. He makes a range of other rods too but given you are using 15kg mono, you'd want something in the 7+wrap range. The Angler Azagaie range is top value for money too as they are made with Pacific Composite blanks (now Exel) and some local stores do stock them at present around Sydney.....I am currently in the midst of shopping around for a new custom rod to suit my Alvey 700A5, so if you want some more tips, feel free to PM me as I've been researching the last 12 mths for Alvey reel blanks. cheers, Spizza
  18. Hi Woodchop (+ Squire), as rod builder(s) you may be able to help me with this question: My Angler Azagaie is rated for 10-15kg, but is a 5 Wrap (Composite), given on the rod is has the model as AB5157, which I know refers to 5 Wrap, 157inches long (which = 13,2ft) - correct? I know most MT7144's are usually rated for up to 10kg line, so am very surprised this model Ab5157 is rated to 15kg line? I got to tell you the rod actually feels heavy duty and very capable of managing big baits, casting etc. Can you shed any light? Can 5 wraps depending on build be as solid as 7 wraps etc? Cheers, S.
  19. thanks, could also be this company, they seem to carry excel composites - http://www.therodworks.com.au/
  20. Just curious, is it a low seat reel mount for Alvey's or higher for threadlines reels....? ...
  21. Snyder Glas's are the holy grail for most hardcore surf fisho's, if it's in new condition it will still hold good value. I saw one (7144) go on a famous online shop last week for a couple hundred dollars. Snyder closed down a couple of years ago so they are nostalgic now and sought after. In saying that, Wilson fishing stepped in and is planning to re-release Snyder Glas to the market very soon.
  22. Hi Squire, there is little info on Azagaie rods on the net (& most of it very highly complimented by WA surf fisho's), and it seems the company is Pacific Composites Pty Ltd, which may not be around anymore(?). I've ended up buying the rod today and looking at it I'm very impressed with the build and finish (old school Mustard colour, perfect for an old school 700A5 . I have a few MT7144's so this is another nice addition. Cheers, Spizza
