  1. Clutch, went to Vanuatu a year or two back and spent a small fortune on a charter for sweet f$#@#$ all. After cursing my waste of nearly 2k decided to do it myself, so bought a $10 kiddies rod, some halco poppers and hired myself a catamaran from the resort. trolling the lurer behind the cat I had an absolute ball catching solid GT's and other biteys, all while trying to steer an out of control cat. Took a couple back to the boys in the kitchen to cook up and ended up with friends for life. Great way to fish without spending a fortune a jet ski also suites this style of fishing and enables you to cover a lot of ground. IMO being outgunned is half the fun too
  2. [be hitting the 12 mile and then to browns
  3. i agree with a lot of the sentiments of pogo but where I differ is I dont like to have the line tight to the bomb with live baits, prefering to have a "bow" between cable and line, different when using lures where I keep the line tight to the bomb. IMO this gives a nice bit of slack in the line giving the fish enough time to get a livebait down and swallowed. I also use a long drop back of around 10m or more if the fish are really shy for similar reasons. Like i said "Just My opinion"
  4. Well done Simon a king cant be far away
  5. G Day reckless firstly nice work on the Kings, do you mean that you have been attaching the lives to the hook via a rubber band? I have found that the rubber band can snap before the line relases from the clip, was this happing. I now just pin the livey through the nose, side ways and attach to the line with a rubber band rather than a clip. Use a nice long drop back of around 10m and this seems to work well
  6. Cool mate, dont feel too bad, when you start up you end up loosing more than you catch which makes the first one real special. They never get any easier either you just get better at catching them. Dont be afraid to PM me for some more advice. Cheers Phil
  7. Not trying to debate it with you humesy, not sure how many kings youve landed but i can confidently say that you will have more succses with J hooks than circles on KF. If you want to live bait marlin then go the circles but they are problamatic for the style of fishing your trying to pursue and you will suffer the same fate using them. If your using them for moralistic reasons then thats a totally diffrent ball game and one that could be debated all night. If your worried about inflicting pain on a fish why live bait KF at all. The circle was designed to minimise bycatch deaths from gut hooks
  8. The idea behind a circle hook is that when the fish swallows the bait it will not get gut hooked. The theroy is that the hook will slide back out the gut and then catch in the hinge of the jaw. Striking the fish hard will not allow this to happen, rather a hook up is established by slowly nudging the drag up to strike and then leaning back into the fish when weight is felt. Like i said, I.M.O this allows kings to much time to find structure. It may be, that you were too eager when hooking the fish, resulting in a poor hook set. Keeping things slow and steady as required with circles is difficult when you have a good fish on. But in saying all of that it may have been that the hooks simply pulled, it happens.
  9. The one issue I have with circles for kings is the lag time between taking the bait and hook up, giving the fish valuble line/time to reef you. By the time the hooks set its usually too late. It would also be unusual to be bittten off by a King I would look at your knots or line for nicks etc. Bad luck about the king but better luck next time
  10. Good work Ken, In answer to your question do the kings shadow the tailor, defentlilty. Ive caught a few great fish pinning a tailor and sending it back down and also jigging through the schools. cheers phil
  11. Its a fantastic place isnt resso, Ive done a lot of community work in the outstations of yirrakalla south of Nullambouy and port Bradshaw and blue mud bay. To say the fishing is unbeliveble is the understatement of the year and the cultural experince is unmatched. Good on ya mate
  12. Bad luck Kevvie better luck next time
  13. Kev the greenback went 66 to the fork and the king is around 64, not the biggest for the day but fantastic table fare

  18. G Day Ben, mate it sounds good in retrospect but there was certinally some moments out there today that I asked my self why the ---- was I out here. Every line seemed to get tangled at some stage, trying to get stuborn hooks out of mouths while trying to steer a boat and not fall off. It was a challanging day for me but well worth it. Dan I think your right I tried MH a week back and have consisntly hit it since september the kings are there but hard work even though the waters a good 2' warmer up there and full of bait and squid
  19. No James I was in the white bananna centre consel boat with the with a blue top on. Im not sure they were Sambos mate but there are big schools there
