  1. Guys on the topic of sabikis does anyone know if R&R brand US made sabikis are distributed in Oz? AFAIK they're the only ones with stainless hooks...a godsend.
  2. Whiting on poppers is sooooo last year. Gar on plastic: the New Black
  3. Check this one out: http://www.marunouchishop.com/main/shimano...er40005000.html Price is fair, very solid unit. The "p" models are better - more torque & lifting power. It's the weapon of choice for Three Kings Island jiggers, and they consistently catch the biggest kingis in the world. Shop around/ask around I got the 4000p for $AUD400. Downside is Shimano Aust won't touch it, and no ratchet; upside is 90% of parts are from TN40N. I have never been reefed with this reel Jack Erskine has beefed up drags for Kiwi jiggers to stop the monsters so further improvements are available Jig and Jig some more!
  4. Agreed. My good fishing buddy from Miami, FL chased mahi's relentlessly for years. In Florida the default "fish & chips" from seafood shops is Mahi's. If they can withstand intense commercial & rec pressure from highly pressured waters then logic dictates Aussie stocks are not under threat.
  5. Are you using a decent length - say 5m of shock leader @ the business end?
  6. too true...find me a baitfish that slowed down to die in the jaws of a kingi
  7. Ask & ye shall receive, Mr Gaffer... http://fishraider.com.au/Invision/index.php?showforum=67
  8. Raymarine recommend a thin coat of anti-fouling. Doesn't affect performance apparently...
  9. Only if you lost the bet...
  10. Here's something I think you'll like, Roberta http://www.wigglefin.com/ I reckon those little suction cups for aquarium air hose would work a DIY treat.
  11. Hey Penguin, ur legendary peeled prawns are not to blame; the affliction is called Myoliquefaction literal translation "milky flesh" and is caused by a protozoan parasite very common to seriola species in sub tropical to tropical climates. First case I've heard of it this south. No doubt Old Mate has travelled quite some distance, possibly from QLD. It doesn't affect the well being of the fish, the good news from your capture is warm EAC is here & a host of other warm water predators are very nearby! If you're up to it, the stinky head is a gun lobster bait - they go nuts over it. Oops, meant 'Hey Daleyboy', saw prawns mentioned and just figured
  12. Hey Muddy, Get yourself the appropriate admiralty chart (AUS 200 for MH/PJ, 201 eastern sheet) and go over every inch of it studiously. Be prepared to put in long hours on the water, keep checking the reports here, the patterns are clear after a while. Tides, moon phase, ambient light and atmospheric conditions all play their part. My angling 'mentors' catchprase is: 'every hours reconaissance is worth ten in the field'. His most valued item of tackle is the kitchen table, and he spanks it in the field 9/10 times. Not a specific answer for you - keep in mind you're asking for the location of the Holy Grail Jig
  13. cool Pel, thx for clarifying the story. I was getting 3rd hand info
  14. Boof you should put ur handiwork in "The Workshop" section. it's well worthy
  15. Nope haven't heard anything new, can only assume the best...
  16. The following is a text message sent from my Sister, who is a fanatical Riviera owner based at Hope Island. Just heard on the VHF that two big flybridges have capsized just outside the seaway while taking part in the comp. I'm glad we made the decision last week to give it a miss! I was scheduled to compete in the tournament Thank God we pulled out based on weather predictions! The next message (edited 'cos FR is a PG show) reads: We haven't heard if the crew are OK, but we are at the marina now, so I'm sure we will hear the news. Scary stuff! We went out to the seaway this morning and it was crap, I'll keep you posted No corpse ever won the prize. No one ever choked swallowing their pride. They're just fish FFS!! Take it easy, PLEASE!! Jig
  17. +1 for the Nexus technique. stays alive & thrashy for yonks
  18. Good thing you're here to keep me in line Stewy, I'll correct the post, d'oh!
  19. Hi Raiders, Big schools of small Frigate Macks are on the chew in our beloved harbour. Autopsy revealed that eyes to 1.5"are the primary diet, sandy sprats 2-3"the secondary diet, terns and seagulls are the clue. Kombi & I had to work very hard this arvo in trying conditions to get a hook in, but it was well worth the effort with the UL spin stik in crazy angles, the poor little eggbeater howling in protest with me dipping the rod up to the foregrip to prevent hull/prop bustoff from the jet propelled craziness. Surely these unguided missiles are God's gift to swoffers I'll be better prepared for round 2! Jig
  20. http://fishraider.com.au/Invision/index.php?showtopic=27483 I would suggest dropping sabikis upcurrent of the SS Currajong (google it) be mindful of traffic, it's smack bang in the Western Channel. A good sounder is essential. best of luck!
  21. Mitchell rzep is on the crab The next star of Deadliest Catch
  22. We use a PE 6-8 jig rod for 'rigging. I reckon it's perfect. 100% crossweave carbon designed for very heavy drag settings & vertical lift - downrigging is vertical heavy drag fishing (if u want a chance @ landing the prize). So carbon rods are OK if and only if you choose the appropriate style! If $300+ is too much to spend - go glass. Hope that helps with ur q's Jig
  23. Robbie I had great success a couple of days ago slow trolling a pencil bait. The CD's were ignored as was the livie, the 3 kingis I caught smashed the 'cigar' right up in the prop wash, no more than 5m back. I'm convinced they love prop wash, tomorrow I'll try 4m back with "teddy torpedo". Poor old Ted, busted in the head Earned his keep today three kingis dead!
