  1. Easy. Go see an auto leccie, get a double pole relay, he'll draw you a simple diagram, donezo
  2. Hey Dicko, I'm also hell-bent on luring a Dory or two. I reckon a Takaibura jig is the go. The challenge with luring Dory is their ultra slow stalking behaviour. They quite literally stalk their prey moving in only millimetres at a time undetected due to their stealth, then boof their target with the remarkably extensible gob. So a lure that 'works' with an absolute minimum of angler input - or better yet left unattended in a rod holder should be the ticket. Here's the chosen weapon, bring it ON
  3. Hi Scon I have one of those Shimano jiggers (4000P) mechanically it will handle any fish you are likely to encounter on a jig, I fish PE8 on it to the max. Be sure to get the "P" models with lower gear ratio for more cranking torque. The narrow spool is essential. It's also my go to for big livies & downrigging. As someone else has mentioned it's the reel of choice in locations like Three Kings & LHI the downsides are no local support, and no ratchet! G/L with whatever you choose, all the suggested reels are well up to the task. Jig
  4. A gun Auckland angler and tackle shop owner who fished with my Dad gave the tip for exactly what you describe (non-commital kingi 'nudging'). Pull up your livey & give it a few slashes with a sharp knife. A thrashing, dying unable-to-escape self berleying mack should tip them over the edge! I can tell you from experience that kingis of all sizes will take any size livie as long as the kingi can crush & fit the baits head.
  5. I smell cottage industry... designer bags, wallets, belts & boots made from the prized hide of the rare Australian "Oriental Triggerfish" If Queenslanders can sell Cane Toad boots in Texas for $$$, and Japs sell eel skin wallets & bags to the world for $$$ why the hell not?? Revenge is best served cold, tanned and profitable.
  6. Yikes! Godspeed for a quick & painless recovery.
  7. Thanks Bro. The reel is spooled with braid + a 30m mono topshot. Keeping the troll speed a bit slower than usual 2.5-3kn just wound in about 1/2 to 2/3rds of the mono then freespooled it back to the 30m mark, didn't work the rod at all. All but one of the bonnie strikes were within 3 secs of engaging the gears, just like your experience with the macks. the kingi however took it on the retrieve only 3m from the rod tip. Simple but effective!
  8. Thx pcoops. They were mid-size 45-55cm, better than the run we had in mar/april. I'm gonna try this for dinner. Oh yeah... Jig
  9. As per the title. Trolled around the heads late this arvo -just to escape the 'jacket plague- and the bonnie action was hot. Was a solo mission so only one rod used. kept 3, released 5 and a rat. Nine hard charging light tackle firecrackers within 1hr on sunset...champagne fishing Stainless inox CD-MAG14 in clown did all the damage. These things are dynamite! I don't think they're made anymore?? 8 takes were on the set-back or retrieve...ya gotta work it baby! I'm sure they follow for quite some time & the change in retrieve is the trigger. Weekend is looking a bit nautical, let's hope they stay awhile.
  10. For anyone who enjoys a good read about our harbour, like this great article, or anyone who fishes for that matter A Jerk On One End by Robert Hughes is top stuff.

  13. Just for you Holmesie: Wartsila-Sulzer RTA96-C turbocharged two-stroke diesel engine is the most powerful and most efficient prime-mover in the world today; Journal bearings piston & rod assembly Crankshaft in place Assembled block AND...
  14. Warnie thats a classic story about the missing H, and Methodman I would never buy a boat called ILLFISHER
  15. I have a brass bodied Canadian Wiggler and an old Cisco Kid, anyone remember those? There's a Super-Duper floating around somewhere as well, and some mother-of-pearl eyed tuna feathers from the "bluefin days"!
  16. Yep good fishing in HK means either a pay & play "fishing park" in the new territories (salt & fresh) or a long range charter to the oil rigs. the main targets there are Amberjack & GT's, with queenies for fun. I chatted with a few tackle shop proprietors and they all expressed contempt and utter disgust at the poor management of fisheries there. They're envious of how well our fisheries are managed, regarded as worlds best. One tackle shop owner sent some lads to WA for a Samson jigging session for publication in a popular angling mag. Most Aussies don't appreciate or respect how good we have it here
  17. If it's any consolation you're welcome to have my never used Scotty rod nonholder gratis...to me it's not worth a pinch of sh!t, pretty obvious why. That is a truly amazing sequence of events. I'm sure you'll get your gear back, tho eating the bastard is surely payback!! Post of the month, right there
  18. Nice work Bro. We spotted you @ SF bluff today, can't mistake that signage. It was a long ass day for us as well:(
  19. That's a Scarlet Job-Fish Etelis coruscansAKA Flame Snapper, Blackfish got it!. Australian range is from 200 fathoms Sthn Qld shelf to Sydney, and is good on the tooth. Jig
  20. Mariner, with the middle one is the top tail lobe longer than the lower tail lobe??
  21. That would never make it out of my kitchen
  22. LOL funny you mention that, the 3rd member of our party bailed due to "gastrointestinal issues" We TXT'd him the above pic with the caption "bet you've got the sh!ts now" PS I gave one of the rods I got from you to Bung today, unfortunately didn't put a bend in it. At least he didn't get the sh!ts about it Jig
  23. Fine haul there and a diamond day to to top it off. Gotta love the mid week serenity!
  24. Set off with Bung AKA Ron Burgundy in search of calamari this morning at the usual haunts for a blank OK plan B is put into action, get some yakkas at Rocky Point. Ended up with more 'sundries' than yakkas Mama told be there'd be days like these. Anyways we've got stuffs what swims, so we set off to 'Spot X'. Yakkas deployed promptly, I grab one of the two UL spin rods & attach a popper which is waaay oversize for this tackle class & commence 'teasemup' procedures. Yakka #1 goes off, short tussle and a 71cm rat is landed. Deploy another yakka in eager anticipation, but the situation an hour later is grim....so just for fun I tie a 40lb leader on UL stick #2 rigged with a ballasted pencil float and a live...sweep. Meanwhile Bung has mastered the arts of bloop, walk the dog, twitch & rip etc. He is now proudly an accomplished popperererer. Suddenly a splash & boil break the serenity & yes...the sweep has been wolfed on 3kg gear over very rough terrain in only 26ft of water...yikes. I had to play the hand I was dealt so I freespooled him. Bung did his Ron Burgundy duties & I very gently guided the fish whilst Bung did a stellar job of guiding the boat into deep water about 300m from X. By this stage I had lost an estimated 100m of line, but I had him in deep water away from any structure. My very first Kingi was a NZ rat caught incidentally on trout spinning gear, so my trial by fire was: as little drag as possible to keep contact with the fish and hey presto...they don't bolt for cover. 10 mins of kid-gloved judicious rodwork and Bung nets a just legal rat. We were freakin' over the moon to have won with such odds using butt kicking teamwork. A champagne finish to a sour milk start And sweep make great livies. Very thrashy and hardy on the hook "I am The Great Bungholio..I need KF for my bunghole"
  25. It's a thrill for sure. Watching them both zig-zag at speed, trying to out manouevre each other. Usually the yakka bolts for the hull, sometimes it'll surface only to be smashed in a shower of spray...knee trembling stuff
