  1. Im with greg at least 7 turns for thin braid ... Matter of fact i use 7 turns for all uni knots witch is the only knot i use and double the braid on that side of that knot ... Cheers John....
  2. First step is tackle or equipment , No point in taking a knife to gunfight if you know what i mean . Im using a shimano saragoosa 1800f on a bluerose shimano rod 80lb braid fished to its limit . . Next is bait large size that way rat kings dont eat them . . As with all fish that school 9 times out of 10 the smaller fish will always eat your bait before the bigger fish , once this happens they smarten up . So use big baits that way the smaller fish wont eat it and the big fish has a chance at your bait . . . Hope this helps ...... Cheers ... John...
  3. Thats Great to hear , So are they going to send you some Yak Fisher decals ..... I think they should .... Cheers John....
  4. Hi salmon hunter , Yeah im sure you know the boat .... Mate i havn't been to the twelve mile in 2 months these are Botany Bay fish..... Not crazy just know my boats limits and dont push it beyond them.... Have even fished out the shelf in it......
  5. Hi Matt , Im sure that sea lion will be fine , there tough buggers . . Now with the rough seas last week im sure he would have had a lot of trouble getting on the rocks where he is...so the sealion is just resting up . Now if your fishing there tommorow im sure he would love a great feed of fish . . . And your generosity will be rewarded.. Cheers John....
  6. Hi Everyone, With the windy days last week making it a non fishing week it was decided to hit Botany bay in search of some more kingfish. Headed out early and scored a few Tailor , then headed to the bait grounds . With a few live baits on board we headed to the King Fish ground . . First bait deployed and 30 mins later the reeel began to scream ...zzzzz. 5 mins into the fight and all was looking good , had battled the early runs , then the fish power dived and found the unforgiving bottom .... Well thats fishing but it sure was a solid fish , just wish we got a quick glimpse.... so rerigged deployed bait number 2 and 5 mins later im on ..... now the drag had been pushed up another turn the fish played fair but felt nowhere near the size of the first ... Got the kingie boatside and my mate fish did a good job on the gaff . . Good to see his knees dont tremble anymore . . ......10 kg of Botany bay king and measured 1070 mm long... Now with the summer kings coming soon it might be time to upgrade from 80lb braid as its now on the limit . Just need to tie myself to the boat..... Cheers ....Dogtooth..... John.... 10 Kg Botany Bay king Tailor and King

  8. Penn make a rod called the 950 , A tackle shop has them on sale for $ 38 dollars i own 4 use them for Bottom bashing , Caught a king of 12 kg this year in january with one , Caught a jewie at 15kg with the same rod . You used to be able to buy the 950 penn spinfisher reel plus rod for under $ 200 dollars . Best rod and reel combo on a Budget . Hope This helps Dogtooth... ....John....
  9. Thanks for the reply Greg , Just purchased a New daiwa setup to give the reds a go once these seas settle . I know that area pretty well up around longreef so im hoping to get my first solid red on plastics up there .... Cant wait to hit the Mid North coast ...... Cheers ....Dogtooth ..... John.....
  10. That is some top fishing there Greg. You have me pumped to get out there and chase a few myself.... Never caught one on soft plastic but will give it a go once the wind settles .... Also how long is your leader Thanks...... Cheers for the reports... Dogtooth..... John.....
  11. Mars bar size is good . But the larger the bait the bigger the fish . . . For the Big kingfish whole frigate mackeral or bonito live , would always take the huge fish . . . I was once told that the Kingfish they had in Manly aquarium were all caught using whole live Salmon around the heads . . . . I have had them eat 1.5kg snapper at the boat . . . Up the North coast or down south the larger fish are more common , but its all about trolling big baits on good tackle . . . Cheers Dogtooth.... John.....
  12. I agree that you will see a concrete block but , sounders work off fishes swim bladders and if your using a colour unit , fish will show up differently depending on the size of there swim bladders. . Have a look at the previous links posted . . . I am able to watch a soft plastic dropped to the bottom in 20 metres of water and watch my jig when jigging at the peak . . . When downrigging can watch the bomb perfectly . . . Able to take you in the river sometime for a soft plastic session so you can have a look... http://www.defender.com/html/fishfinder_info.html cheers John...
  13. Heres another intresting read..... As for sharks if you have ever cut one open there livers are very huge and floats so yes you will pick up sharks with your sounder..... http://www.gpscentral.ca/fishfinders.html http://www.science.org.au/nova/102/102print.htm Large jewfish have very large otoliths... Cheers John......
  14. Shimano Taren point . Spare parts section upstairs . Tackle shop could help you out but you may pay more..... Cheers John.....
  15. Hi Aussie Big Bob , Nice tacle storage i have similar rod racks myself , But i see in your first photo you have a rod rack with only 1 rod on it so you will have to head to the tackle shop and fill her up... Also its always better fishing with a brand spanking rod and catching a top fish...... Top set of downriggers i must say..... Cheers Dogtooth..... John......
  16. Hi Josh, I have a 2000 sol and would also recomend it . Very smooth reel . . Cheers Dogtooth..... John....
  17. Hi Roberta , This rig is not mine but here is a link ...... http://www.kayakfishingstuff.com/Merchant2...amp;Screen=PROD Cheers John.....
  18. Here's a worthwille read regarding sonars...... But turning your sounder off will only work if using a GENUINE 600 watt plus sounder ... Also im sure you have heard your transducer make clicking noises . As with all sounders they work off the size of the fishes swim bladder , the bigger the fish , the bigger the swim bladder and the more it is affected by your sounder.... So if your chasing Giant jews or Huge reds you dont need your sounder on while your anchored . . Your not going anywhere... http://www.physorg.com/news102869243.html Cheers John...
  19. Here some more options for the Kayak brigade... Cheers Dogtooth.... John...
  20. Thats a top idea . well done Roberta... Cheers Dogtooth... John...
  21. Hi squid king , I run the same sounder as you , I always turn mine off when fishing for Jewfish or Snapper anchored . Only reason i do this is because a few guys that profish swore that it would put the fish, Jewfish or Snapper off the Bite . Cheers Dogtooth ..... John....
  22. That is a top report Nanook . When fishing in the ice holes are they Saltwater fish or freshwater fish . As i once watched a show where they caught giant sharks fishing in little holes like that using Tiagras and game rods . And they used a deck winch setup with a plate of steel similar to a permatrim as a sinker to catch the current and clipped on 30 hooks . when they bought it up every hook had a fish... Cheers John...
  23. Top fish on the soft plastics , well done . Cheers Dogtooth... John....
  24. Nice Hammer there Arman , but i must ask dave if thats a Newtown Jets hat your wearing.... Cheers John....
  25. Well after last weeks effort on the Kings it was decided to Give Botany Bay another go . Launched the boat early deployed some Blue swimmer traps and headed to the bait grounds . Managed to pick up 3 tailor on our travels . In went the livie and a slow troll around my favourite Kingfish grounds . As my mate Fish missed out last week , he was first on strike . An hour or so went past and the reel began to scream , almost was smoking, 30 seconds later pop ... Damm rubbed off on the bottom . Well that king was in excess of 20 kg ... Put another livie out for a swim 20 minutes later the reel starts to scream no way near the sound that was before . My mate fish did a top job on the rod and was truely rewarded with a new PB and a top king 11.5kg and 1130 mm long High fives all round . Headed home and found 2 nice blue swimmer crabs eating off my kingie frame from last week . Will let the Pictures do the talking Cheers Dogtooth .... John... Fish with 11.5 KG king Here the crab Pics.....
