  1. Mike I am not familar with Quintrex Bayhunter does it have the optional stainless bracket on the transom they were using a few years ago for skiing and for the quintrex bait board. We came up with an aluminium custom cutting board live bait tank that can be removed easily, required no fixing holes, does not mark the boat in any way, and does not move. We have the pump hose removable so we can wash bait board down into tank. If you have that type of stainless bracket and are interested let me know and I will figure out how to post some photos. Jason
  2. Great work Jewgal. I just put a link in the fishing chat section but here it is again see chart page 11. http://www.foodstandards.gov.au/_srcfiles/...arch%202007.pdf
  3. Click on the link below page 11 has a chart showing dioxin levels in different species and where they were caught. Hope this helps. http://www.foodstandards.gov.au/_srcfiles/...arch%202007.pdf I have been told most of the dioxin is a result of Union Carbide making agent orange at Homebush but there is no proof as the government at the time never asked them what they were making. Now we import, untested Vietnamese fish and prawns untested go figure.
  4. I have tried a few different places originally with orange juice bottle type trap and now use a different version with a tupperware type container with a modified lid using chicken wire and fiberglass flywire and it works well. Yet to master them around my area (Holsworthy). I havent tried around here with new trap, but can get them pretty quickly if I drive 25min. Damos had attempted in the deepwater area but you need to be careful what you attract. I thought I was chasing bait not the bait if you know what I mean. Pinkus I didn't realise you were landbased, I generally fish from a boat so casting isnt an issue and drift rather than anchor if chasing flatties.
  5. I caught them in salt water took them home and put them in the garage. I use one of those plastic storage containers about 50lts but with only about 6 to 8 inches of water in it with aerator. Had about 15 to 20 mullet at the start. I use a fish net to scoop out the crap and have a bucket of tap water beside it every day or two i replace about 1/2 to 1 litre of water. Every other day I feed them usually goldfish food, sometimes bread, cheese, biscuit or nippers broken up small. When I go out fishing I throw them in the bait tank, so once out they change straight to saltwater and whatever comes back goes back into the container. They survived about 1 month between trips. Only have 2 now the first death was last week. Now it is winter they dont see as much light so I dont know if thats why but I threw in a little bit of pool salt to see if that helps. It entertains me and the kids. Funny story I was setting up a live bait tank and had the pump recirculating water into a container in the garage which has a painted floor. There was other full buckets of water on the tressels also. I stepped over the mullet container slipping and knocked over the mullet and all the other buckets hurting my foot in the process. We then had 20 mullet jumping around in about 100 litres of water on the floor. I yelled out and my six year old came out her first comment was oh s##t. She helped me pick them up (they were under the boat and amoungst the rubbish) before we had a talk about the swearing. Would of one funny home videos. Good thing no mates or my wife were there to see it.
  6. Hi pinkus, Last summer was my first attempt at catching and using poddies. Recently caught a 15cm flattie on a 12 cm poddy it had swallowed about half, head first so no probs with bait size. Have been hooking behind the head or through the lip. The last couple of trips I was using about 1.5m trace with a ball sinker above swivel. I noticed in the shallows the poddy swam up quite high so will be going back to a 50cm trace or thereabouts as I think he may of been getting out of ambush zone. They stay alive for months with just an aireator in a plastic bucket if you change the water regularly I just use day old tap water. Jason
  7. Hi Rob, Goodluck, I look forward to your report, you reports are helpful and always make a great read. Jason
  8. Hi A. Dawg. How do you fish with the squid spikes do you use them like a squid jig or are they suspended under a float is this realistic. I have considered having one out whilst using squid jigs but thought it would get destroyed by pickers. Are you talking about the type you thread through the bait, or is there some other method. I appreciate your advise as I am new to squidding.
  9. Jewgaffer I am not sure I understand what you mean when you say having the barbs face each other, if somebody could draw a picture with hook position in bait I would appreciate it. The rig I used with yakka was a ball sinker running to swivel followed by a 1m trace, hooks were tied using your double blood knot. The first top hook was through the lip and the lower hook towards the tail. The rig was dropped to the bottom and lifted about 1m. I am considering changing the lower hook to a treble in the poo hole do you think that is worthwhile. The handline rig had for livebait had 2 no 12 hooks and I had crimped a small piece of stip lead about 10cm above lower hook and a dropper about 10cm above with top hook (there was no positive pressure on either hook). I noticed in a previous post of yours, you stessed the importance of having positive pressure on the hook and described rig when using multiple hooks tied similarly to your description above to make them standout from the line with a small ball sinker on top of lower hook. I will be trying this in future to see if I can improve the hookup rate of livies as we seem to spend to much time mucking around to get them.
  10. Went to the Bay on sunday for our first crack at squiding. We launched at Kyeemah ramp around 7am. High tide was about 8am.Our first try was on the western side of Bare Island for no luck. We decided to try the eastern side which was more protected from the slight breeze. Steve my fishing mate for the day landed a good size squid which was quickly in the tank. After trying moving around a bit we moved to the nside corner from the container wall. I wasn't as confident here as there seemed to be more rock and less kelp. Undaunted Steve quickly produced another good size squid which was our last for the day. We switched to trying to catch some livies on handline and were soon frustated. These were already rigged and we learned our lesson about rusty blunt hooks. The day was getting away so after re-rigging we landed two Yakkas and left. Went to the drums as everbody else was at Mol point. Dropped the two yellowtail down, and started floating baits ( frozen nippers and chicken fillet) down berlay trail. Soon after I landed a 26cm bream, followed by a small kingy. Pulled up yellow tail mine was on a two hook rig only to get the head and tail back with no middle. Steve retrived his to find a 45cm flattie on it. We dropped down some live poddys I had bought out for the day for naught. All in all whilst we didnt catch heaps it was a pretty good day considering we hadn't squidded before and only fished for about an one and half hours. Sorry no photos. Finished up about 2pm.
  11. After joining fishraider over a year ago, I have learnt more in that time (and only just starting) about fishing than I had in my previous 36 years so I thought it is about time I should start to contribute to the forum. My name is Jason my nickname is Welster I am 37 and live in Holsworthy. I have a wife who usually lets me out and 2 girls 6 and 4. I am a builder mainly doing extensions and renovations to peoples homes. We share a 5.2m Quintrex bowrider between myself and 2 mates which works out great. I have fished since I was young and my parents also had a boat when I was younger. It was not until I joined this site that I have started to try to improve my fishing results which were generally somewhere between poor and dismal. They have improved but have a long way to go. We generally fish the Bay and Port Hacking occasionally. In the last year we have started taking the kids on trips to catch nippers and poddy mullet, the kids seem to enjoy these quick trips more than fishing. In the last week we have also started learning jow to catch squid. Over the last year we have made improvements to our boat including stereo installation, dual battery set up and a custom removable live bait tank. A Berley bucket to be the next addition. It is great to be able to look up how fellow raiders have set up their boats as we try to keep our boat a dual purpose as possible. This website is great and has provided me we heaps of entertainment over the last year and is well run which is a credit to the administrators.
