  1. We definitely got some over the summer. We kept them out of the direct sun. If its really hot I guess you could drop a frozen bottle in the change over water and just change a little but more often. There's not much to lose really. Just a shame you can't use them as a strip bait if it doesn't work.
  2. Hi Paul, A couple of years ago I was collecting maybe 15 from salt water and keeping them in one of those 50 litre or so plastic containers about half full. I had another container the same size with more water from where i collected it. Each day I was changing maybe a couple of litres from the spare container and adding fresh tap or tank water to it(after topping up the one with the fish in it so it could age). Over a couple of weeks they were basically on fresh water. I had even taken some out after a couple of weeks put them in the live bait tank and bought back what was left. They pretty much changed straight from fresh to salt water and slowly back again. There was no filter. The container was airated. They were in a garage often in the dark as it has no window. I fed them sparingly, generally the kids gold fish food. They needed a lid with holes cause they jump far. They 10 -15 cm ones seemed to do better than the small ones. Hope that helps Jason
  3. Fishoman. I was thinking about you making something up yourself or getting somebody to weld it up. I don't think it would be that hard to do but you would have to change it over to put the boat away. Depends what your towbar is like. If you can find one that works of the shelf that you can tow with like the other suggestion even better. But probably more expensive. A picture would help.
  4. Great catch. Would be hard to beat getting out on a weekday and coming home with a feed like that. This might be a silly question whats the PPP.
  5. Thanks for that it wont be long before the councils hone in on a new source of revenue. I guess half of Sydney's boat ramps are now ornaments, or a day in the boat has become even more expensive. Either that or you detach the trailer fom the car, beware of the runaway trailer at the hilly areas surrounding some ramps. That might be more entertainment than watching the shenanigans at the ramp itself.
  6. Thanks for the post Mushtaka, I have meaning to ask a similar question, so unfortunately I cant answer yours. I have brand new 50lb power pro braid (hasnt been out fishing) and was playing around measuring the drag settings with spring scales and found it to be breaking between 10 and 12 kg (22-25lb). I have since tested the line off the real and get a similar result. Sometimes it breaks at the swivel I had it tied to and others in the centre of the length of line (2-4m). I then started testing other lines and got about 15kg out of 60lb black magic flourocarbon leader.I started to doubt the scales and started weighing things like fuel cans etc and they seem to be pretty close. I though maybe I was jerking the line as I was pulling the scales and suspended the weights under the line instead the result was still the same. So my questions are: Should the line hold 50lb of dead weight which is what I thought the breaking strain meant. Isn't braid suppose to be stronger than its claimed strength. What is the best braid to swivel knot or should I attach a leader first. I seemed to of developed a talent for finding ways of losing good fish and dont really want to add anymore to the list so your advise would be appreciated. Thanks Jason
  7. how do you find out the records of certain fish? Be good to look at if there is a certain link on this site Sounds like you had a great day and a top trev to finish off the day. Here is the link to the fishraider Trevally records. Your mates would be second, but I think he would need to be a member to submit it to the records section. http://www.fishraider.com.au/Invision/index.php?showtopic=24442
  8. Hi Rafinex, I have kept them alive for weeks changing some of the water each day with aged tap water or tank water. Fill up a bucket of water and keep it next to it so the temperature is the same and change some say 20 % the next day. Keep the aerator going continuously. Careful they will jump out if you dont cover the container. I have used goldfish food to feed them, just dont overfeed them as more food equals more waste it wouldn't be necessary for a couple of days. They have survived changing from salt to fresh water and back again no problems. Hope that helps.
  9. Hi Baz, I received the same email and was to put it politely, quite annoyed. Well done for letting them have it. I didn't voice my concerns but should have. A large portion of my time recently has been occupied by dealing with government bodies and large businesses. Either way we loose if you let it slide they have got away with it, spend the day complaining and your not earning any money or fishing. It seems these organisations don't follow the rules and guidelines they just create them. I guess we will be getting plenty of emails from tackle shops and the like in the near future, so maybe its not all bad.
  10. It seems there are always more rules and never less. I can see that most people would not wear a life jacket in a heightened risk situation unless forced, but I dont like the idea of the goverments taking away peoples ability to think and apply there own judgement which they seem to do in all aspects of life. I am also concerned about any additional ramifacations for the skipper if there is a fatality. If he did not think there was a heightened risk but a court decides that was the case (with crystal clear hindsight). What happens then. We also all know many family members would make it difficult for the skipper to even suggest a lifejacket should be worn. Not much will change for me as my boat is over 4.8m and the kids have always worn a lifejacket.
  11. Its amazing just how many different species of fish are caught by fishraiders. Did you measure or weigh it. Either way you should submit it to the records section.
  12. I went out saturday and had a quite day as well. Caught 4 bream 27 to 31cm at Mol point near high tide and not much else after moving just some some reddies and a Port Jackson. Does anybody know what the restricted (yellow markers) area near Capt Cook landing spot is about.
  13. Thanks Raiders i really appreciate your feedback. The corrosion is not just near the fittings, although it is mostly on that top part of the hull and rail. We have a duel battery setup but we have not done anything to connect an earth to the hull that wasnt already there from new. The hull is directly earthed from the factory/dealer ???(not sure who does it) which is frustrating if thats not a good idea. I imagine it would take some effort to prevent the hull from being connected to the earth at all through the engine mounting etc. Over the next few weeks I will be having a look at the fittings and duralec, and look into removing the earth from the hull or possible the switch as suggested. Is there anything else I should be doing, thanks for the help. Jason
  14. G'day raiders. After spending part of the weekend looking at the boat wishing I was out fishing, the corrosion/ electrlysis that has been progressively gatting worse was annoying me. If any raiders could offer some opinion or advise I would appreciate it. I have attached a photo of some of the paint blisters, the other photos I took didnt show it. The boat is a quintex bowrider, I guess about 7 years old. It is always washed, and stored in the garage out if the weather. The blistering is mainly around the joins. A couple of years ago I installed a stereo and noticed that the hull is already earthed from the factory/dealer, any wiring installed by me has an earth cable run from the battery to the accessory.. We generally have the battery charger on maintenance whilst connected to the boat, and we dont usually turn the battery isolater off. The boat gets in the water maybe 15 to 20 days per year we always wash it on return. My questions are Is this blistering avoidable or can we reduce it. Does the earth to the hull effect it and if so is it only whilst the boat is actually in the water. If the battery was disconnected or isolated whilst not in use would it help or is it irrelevent. Is there something we should be doing that we are not. Thanks in advance.
  15. If you dont want to use a one way valve put the inlet at the top and run the hose down the inside of the esky/tub to the bottom and put a bend on the boottom to circulate the water nicely. At the top inside the esky place a tiny hole in the hose to stop the syphon effect. cheers Jason
  16. Depends on where you are going to put it in your boat and how you might fasten it in. If you get an esky, one with a hinged lid would be good.
  17. Thats frustrating who knows what there thinking. Sometimes where I go with the kids 1 bottle seems to get more than the others. I often think in a shaded part is better with only a little bit of water over it say 3 to 4 inches. I put the bread in the neck of the bottle which does give me the irits if it works it way out just as ther coming around. I have also noticed not much happening until the water gets a bit of movement although when I was away we were able to catch them at smith lake which has no tidal flow (we let them go as we were just playing around with the kids whilst trying some soft plastics). By the way they will stay alive for a few months with about 6 inches of water in one of those plastic storage containers. You just need an aerotor and chang a couple of litres of water every few days. I use tap water that is a couple of days old. Feed with goldfish food. I have had some that have been out on fishing trips 2 or 3 times changing back and forth from salt to fresh. My biggest problem is consistent conversion into dinner, where others like Jenno64 seem to have it all worked out.
  18. This is an interesting question but I dunno the answer either. Here are two web sites that may be of some interest but dont seem to answer the question. http://www.moonconnection.com/moon_phases.phtml http://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/education.html So i thought I would have a stab at it. If somebody actually knows feel free to correct it. The lunar day is 24 hours and 50 minutes but the suns position can lenghten or shorten the average tide cycle depending on where it is relative to the moon but over a course of a lunar cycle averages out. This is without considering local geographical factors. But this is my guess only. Tune out now if you like. All items with mass have gravity. (gravity is pulling you and all other objects in the room towards each other but it is a very weak force compared to the earth because of the small mass involved.) Gravity is inversly propartional to the the square of the distance apart. So if you double the distance between two objects the gravitational attraction to each other is divided by 4. This is why the moon has a greater effect than the sun. With the other planets having a much smaller effect. The moon has an eliptical orbit around the earth (29.5 days i Think )varying the pull it has on earths water. The earth has an eliptical orbit around the sun also varying the gravitational pull on the earths water.
  19. Here are the pictures of the two types of trap I use This one has lead folded over and glued to the bottom and not much care is taken but it works. This is my prefered trap. The elastic was added because the container chosen lid did not stay on very well and still catches plenty. I hope this helps.
  20. Wow thats one big poddy trap Driftwood let us know how it works. Maybe take some orange juice or coke bottle ones to put in the shallower water and let us know your results. At a bag limit of 20 per person if you get them excited you will need plenty of friends.
  21. I have had no success at all with the mesh store bought traps, except for really small fish so I would say this method is a waste of time. The orange juice bottle method works quite well. I cut a hole about 2in square on the opposite side to the label (no need to remove the label). Rather than add rocks as weight i stuck some sheet lead folded over (inside the bottle on the back of the label) with silicone. Put the bread in the neck of the bottle and place in the water with label side down on the sand. The bottle only needs about 3 inches of water over the top to be effective. Add some bread or crumbs to the water if necessary to bring the around. My prefered method is to use a clearish tuppaware type container (check the max size allowed by fisheries and buy one smaller) or better still take it from the wifes collection she wont miss it until its too late. The lid needs to fit on firmly or clip on. Glue lead to the base of the container or use rocks if you prefer to weigh it down. Drill some holes say 3/8 in the container base and top. The lid needs a hole cut in the top say 3-4 inches square. Around the large hole drill some small holes 1/8th or so. To the underside of the lid sow (with fishing line) some plastic type flyscreen mesh and below that some gal bird wire. The bread is put between the two pieces of wire so you only sow two ends of the bird wire put completely around the fly wire. Put a hole about 1 inch in the flyscreen wire and a biggerhole in the bird wire. I tried to use silicone to fix the wire instead of sowing but it didnt stick to the plastic maybe sikaflex would. When you put the bread in between the two pieces push a small hole through the bread where the hole is. Once in the water this method seems to be a bit slower to start to work but if you can leave it alone for up to half an hour you can have heaps in there. If you have a second go leave a couple in the container it seems to work quicker. I mostly catch poddies in the 8 to 15cm range but sometimes there a few bigger ones. Remember you are allowed to keep 20 per person up to 15cm and 1 trap per person so take the kids if you have some they love it. They will also keep for over a month at home (the mullet not the kids) with an aireator in a plastic container from the cheap shop. Hope this makes sense if not I may be able to add some photos later.
  22. Great catch and an informative report. A great way to start the weekend. Did you catch it on your squid live or strips or something else and what was your rig. I appreciate any info you are willing to share. Thanks
  23. Hi Muz, I am no knot expert but I like Jewgaffers double blood knot. I think it may be what you are after. Here is the link. http://fishraider.com.au/Invision/index.ph...c=28807&hl= Jason
  24. Congrats Jenno64 a gret result. I always enjoy reading your reports none more than so than this.
