  1. Thanks Josh, I will mark that spot on my map and give it ago, I tend not to wade up around that area not only for the jelly fish. The first time I was up at Cairns I went into a spot to check it out for fishing potential and didnt feel comfortable and the next day a german lady went into the same spot and was bitten by a 6 foot freshwater croc. 2. Hi Everyone, I am off to Cairns in May, first real holiday in about 8 years, so if anyone has any places they have fished or can recommend, I would appreciate any information. I have fished the area about 8 years ago but I guess like anywhere things can change. I will be going up to the Tablelands and trying my luck on Tinaroo Dam shore based at this stage and off the wharf at Palm Cove. So I am open to suggestions, I like to be prepared before I go. Thanks In Advance Big-Pete

  6. Lasty, I bought one of the newer silicon rubber nets, the water passes through them easily and the hooks dont stick into them. Down side is they are a little heavier than the standard net. Upside they come in a few different sizes and they are easily cleaned and no drama to use. Big-Pete
  7. robeebee, you can purchase some loops made from braided nylon, they slip onto the end of your fly line use some glue like quick grip and wrap some thread over the join, then it's a simple matter of tying a loop onto your leader and presto simple on and off and quick change when needed. 8. GregL, thanks for the imput these lures certainly look good and your reply confirms my thoughts. I have been experimenting with whiting on Poppers and I thought these might do the trick. Thanks again Big-Pete
  9. Hi Everyone, I was surfing the net and I found a photo of a popper that has me interested. It is a Dawia TD Zero popper in smelt, I have checked out the fishing shops in my area and a couple of others and I was wondering if anyone has seen or heard of these lures and if so where can I pick one up from. Thanking You in advance Big-Pete
  10. Roberta, singles work extremely well, everyone I know who trolls tassies always run a single as they worked out you catch more fish, also some of the new Jap lures such as Jacksons have a single on the end. If you want you could go to a double hook with the points facing up that way your lure will go over most snags without getting hooked up. A few of my bass fishing mates cut the middle point out of their jackels so they dont snag up and one of them took out a heap of prizes last weekend down south in a bass comp Big-Pete
  11. I think you will find it is illegal to sell imported prawns for bait. The fear is a disease called white spot it could devestate our crustation population. When I had my shop I used to recieve letters from the DPI on selling imported prawns for bait. The fines were large. I know the price difference is quite substantual but if this disease were to get into our waterways think of the long term damage ie oysters and QX. Big Pete
  12. There was an article written years ago about dredging Myall Lakes, everyone tried to stop it but when the work was done the fishing improved out of sight. Big whiting and every other species were showing up in big numbers. So hopefully removing some of the sand out of the port will make a big difference, what was normally done all the dredged sand was simply heaped up in the middle of the river and over a short period of time wave and wind action would simply push the sand back into the holes created. It will be good to see if the dredging makes a difference to the fishing and at least to make the river a bit easier to navigate. Big-Pete
  13. Thanks for the birthday greetings Big-Pete
  14. I use a product called "Salt Terminator" it works really well I use it on any of my gear that comes into contact with saltwater. It forms a barrier to salt and the more often you use it the better it works Big Pete

    Push Pole

fin101, thanks for the reply I have made a rear deck on my boat and I have spoken to the bloke in the US and he seems to think that the system is ok. I dont think I would want to fit a platform above the motor as I am just not the most stable person, in most ways I am told.lol Thanks again Big-Pete

    Push Pole

Hi Everyone, I just thougth some of you may be interested in a little project that I have been working on. I have been interested in fishing the flats for some time I have and use an electric bow mount but I have been trying to track down a push pole, you know the long poles that the Yanks use on the flats to push their boats around silently. To purchase one locally is next to impossible and to import one the freight costs are huge so i contacted a gent in the US and asked him some questions and worked it out from there how to make one. I have a 4.1 metre Quintrex so I required a pole about 4 metres long. I bought two 3.5 metre extendable painting poles the ones with the fibreglass lower section and the aluminium top section. I removed the twist lock in the middle and glued the aluminium top section inside the glass section for strength, I purchased the foot from the US and I could not but the sand spike end from there as it is an illegal import( dont ask me why) I made one from some 4o mm nylon and also some ends to which I could make a joiner so that I could take the pole in half for ease of transport. Here are a couple of photos of my pole before the joiners were installed Big-Pete Second Photo you will notice the masking tape at intervals on the aluminium this then had arilidite put around it like you do a reel seat so that is fixed into the tube and still allows some flexability Big-Pete
  17. It was a bit of shame that only two squid put in an appearance the conditions were perfect, but two are better than none. A bit of salt and pepper and you have a perfect meal. Big-Pete
  18. Thanks for the advice Hooky, I don't use Firefox as yet but I think the time is coming when I will swap over to it Big-Pete
  19. Hi, I was after a copy of the Berkley Alive video clip I have seen it on youtube but I can not save it from there. If anyone knows how to save it please let me know or if you have a copy can you send it to me. Thanking you in advance Big-Pete
  20. Will do if you want a copy of that dvd let me know Big Pete
  21. Roberta, I was up at Forster a couple of months ago and there were a large amount of bream around the racks but they were not on the bite. I did manage a couple of legal ones on bait but there is so much area to fish and not enough time in a week to sus out all the good spot. There were heaps of pike in amonst the bream is this normal up there ? So good luck, with your quest. Big-Pete
  22. Roberta, looks like you have done your homework on this one, maybe you should try some kangaroo nice and lean and with a bit more taste. Enjoy Big-Pete
  23. Roberta, I would be careful leaving the fat on the meat as it can go rancid, you can speed up the process by putting the meat on racks and placing it in the oven on the lowest heat setting and leave the door slightly open. Some people simply soak the meat in soy and then curing also cut the meat as thin as posible. You can also buy dehydraters, and use them, they blow warm air thru the racks My trade is a meatoligist some call us Butchers. Big-Pete
  24. Roberta, Those DVD's came out about twelve months ago, I must agree they are excellent to watch even the segment on shallow water fishing. They caught heaps in waist deep water, might be worth a try up your way. Big-Pete
  25. I have been using them on my trailer, I took my boat up to Forster from Sutherland Shire a 41/2 hour trip I checked the bearings every time I stopped to rest and they weren't even warm. No oil was used both ways and I am happy with they way they work,if any water does make its way into the hub you can see it straight away, a quick drain, refill and you can get home to clean out and replace/clean the bearings. I don't think they are at any more risk then bearing buddies, just my opinion Big-Pete
