  1. I find a small hook (long shanked) in say size 1 with a running sinker straight down to the hook. Better still is if you can avoid a sinker at all. Avoid using swivels or beads as these are just easy targets for getting bitten off. With the above method you will still lose the odd hook and sinker but i find less than normal.
  2. Hi Chris, They were caught near Dobroyd head. Biggest was approx 30 cm. Couldn't get a bait to the bottom with them literally swarming at about the 4 - 5 mtr mark. BTW - i filleted, coated in olive oil and some moroccan spice and grilled on the BBQ and they were very tasty.
  3. I know one thing for sure is that in the harbour at the moment you will not have any trouble catching 20 Jackets. Had a frustrating session this morning and in the end the jackets won. Kept a few for lunch to get them back for the hooks, swivels, sinkers and fresh squid they took from me.
  4. I've been to Bali too and have experienced a fishing charter but would not recommend. My advise is be careful who you pick and thoroughly research as despite the nice glossy brochure showing very nice clean vessel with lots of Marlin and Tuna does not mean anything. Even ones recommended through the big hotel chains can be a little suspect. Good luck.
  5. Agree with fishin Kiddo. If in doubt throw it out . . . . to sea
  6. Nice report, nice location and a few nice fish to top things off. Well done.
  7. I agree with Ray and always tie a short double in my braid before connecting to either swivel or leader material. I find the the double provides better knot strength. For my double i use a spider hitch and for connecting leaders a double uni knot.
  8. certainly interested and look forward to more info re time, date etc. Many thanks
  9. Agree small long shank hooks are the go. If you have to use a sinker keep it as light as possible and run directly down to the hook. If i can get away with out using sinkers i find hook up rates are better. Peeled prawn and squid are my preferred baits. Very tasty and good for kids as bones are big and easy to remove.
  10. Hello Rehab, Most fish mongers have them otherwise the markets. Not sure how they taste but i am sure they would be ok. Nothing beats doing it yourself and eating warm fresh from the smoker though . . .
  11. Spread on hot buttered toast with plenty of cracked black pepper and a squeeze of lemon . . . yum.
  12. I fished Arthurs in November last year and it did produce some very nice browns on both fly and plastics. One day was wet and blustery and the fly worked and the following day was dry and sunny and only plastics worked. i would love to fish it again but next time i would also like to try a few of the other waters that you have mentioned.
  13. Ross, Sounds like a great trip. I reckon just being able to cast to the tailing fish at Little Pine is great even if they are frustrating hard to hook. Did you consider trying Arthurs or was this closed? Cheers
  14. some cracking browns there Erroll - well done.
  15. Hello Mighty Macs, I have not fished Lake Hume for many years however i beleive like many of our freshwater impoundments it has suffered with very low water levels in recent years. This said my suggestion is to contact the tourist park or speak to your local tackle shop as i am sure they will give you a run down on how things have been fishing lately. In regards to species my impoundment favorites Murray Cod and Yellow Belly are present as well as the introduced redfin and carp. I also understand that Lake Hume has trout. Hope this helps
  16. Great report and awesome pics. Very jealous.
  17. Hello Raiders, I have just returned from an o/s trip where i was lucky enough to get in a few days fly fishing in Sussex in the UK. On the Saturday we fished a place called Lakedown (created by Roger Daltrey) which is a series of river fed small lakes. We used a combination of different wet flies however success came with dark (black and olive) damsel nymphs. I ended up getting 4 fish for the day which the biggest being an 8lb 66cm model. Between the 4 of us we ended up with 15 fish with the biggest of the day being caught by my pommie mate which weighed in at 9.5 lb. On the Sunday with fished the Powdermill Reservoir which is managed by the Hastings Fly fishing Club. Both bank and boat fishing was available however we opted for the boats - rowing with 2 per boat. It was a crisp sunny day and we all had plenty of action. Most of the fish were taken on buzzers with red and black being the pick of the colours however damsel nymphs and woolly buggers were also successful. The fish averaged about 2 pounds but what they lacked in size they made up for with stamina. For anyone travelling to the UK and are keen to know more details of either fishery please feel free to PM me. A couple of pics.
  18. Nice day out by the sounds of things. Good work.

    Shovelnose Rays

Howdy Ray, I have eaten a few times and they were pretty good. The trick i found was to kill and remove their head as soon as caught and this significantly improved the flesh quality and removed the ammonia smell/build up. I don't know the science behind this but it seemed to work. Given the firm nature of the flesh we actually skinned, cubed and made kebabs a few times. In my opinion there is no doubt that there are better eating fish but they are far from the worst i have tried. Also the head tied to a rope doubles as a great beach worm magnet!. Happy chewing. Cheers
  20. Thanks guys - agree that a bit of freshwater action is hard to beat somtimes. By saying this we had to work very hard for the two fish. The river was the Lachlan and i must admit it was as clear as i have seen it for sometime.
  21. Raiders, Headed west on Friday to catch up with a mate and hopefully get a chance to wet a line. After our last excusions together to both Burrinjuck and Mulwala we were hoping that this time i may be able to register a fish on the scoreboard. We had an early start Sat and had the boat floating by sunrise. After fishing choppy and windy conditions on the harbour recently being on a stretch on flat, windless river at the crack of dawn was a welcome relief. While we did have a few yabbies the plan of attack was to spend most of the morning casting at snags with both spinner baits and hard bodies. Cast we did and after hundreds later we decided we would have a quick bait bash to rest the arms. We bobbed yabbies around a couple of different snags but could raise any interest so back to casting we went. We continued to hit snag after snag and eventually we had a couple of knocks . . . but no hook up. Half a dozen casts later my mate stuck hard and finally he had a fish on. A good battle and then a very respectable cod emerged from the depths and hit the net. It was well and truly legal but after a few snaps back in she went. Fish was caught on a purple deep diver. We reposintioned the boat for another crack at the same snag and low and behold my first cast was hit and i was on. Another reasonable battle and then a good fish (in fact a PB for me) emerged but this time a yellow belly. Fish was a tad over 52cm but as fat as any dam yella that i have seen. Again a couple of photos and back she went. Fish was caught on a red and black spinner bait. We persisted at this snag and numerous others for a few more hours and could not raise another fish however we were far from disspointed. We were off the water by about 1.30 pm and were pretty content to get out of the sun. A couple of pics
  22. Well done Zephyr. Agree Slinky - on the weekend between my mate and I we had a 50lb, a 30lb and an 8lb outfit out with a variety of squid baits. The only king we boated all day grabbed the lightest outfit. Anyway as you say a lot of fun. Cheers
