Good work Saltrix, I was also out yesterday morning but couldn't find any fish. Did see some whales breaching off Manly and ran into a pod of dolphins while rounding North Head on the way home. So all in all a very pleasant morning despite an empty esky. Cheers

In North Western NSW we used to bake Yellowbelly - (Golden Perch) in river mud. You would just get the fish (don't scale) and put a couple of gum leaves in the gut cavity before totally covering in the dark, clay like river mud. Cook in the coals until the mud started to crack. The scales would peel off with the skin and you were left with the white flesh.

Agree with Hoodlum92, Stab through the head. Make sure there is something solid underneath them though as there is not much that will slow the knife. Also this method is not recommended in inflatable boats!

Agree that murky water they work. Inland fishing for yellowbelly with 3 others in a boat. I was using the spray and outfished the others significantly. Was spraying my bait of fresh shrimps.

Hello Dangles, I thought that you were not allowed to return carp to the water as they are a recognised pest species. I found this on the DPI website. Help stop the spread of feral fish! Members of the public, including fishers, divers and members of local environmental groups, are often the first to discover a new exotic fish in the wild or the fact that an existing pest has spread into a new area. This information can be very valuable in helping to manage pest problems. You can protect our waterways and native fish by helping to stop the introduction and spread of feral fish into new areas. Report a pest species For recreational fishers: Don’t transfer fish between waterways – and don’t use live fish as bait in freshwater (it’s illegal!) Obtain a permit to stock fish – and buy fingerlings from a registered hatchery to minimise the chances of contamination with undesirable species. Don’t return pest fish to the water – if you catch a pest fish, kill it humanely and dispose of it appropriately. Prevent unwanted hitchhikers – check, clean and dry boats and gear between waterways.

Not that you are permitted to C & R carp in Australia it goes to show that if you do it properly the fish will live. It would be interesting to know if other species could survive being caught 63 times.

I agree with Shaune - i don't think recreational fishing (line fishing) is banned. If in doubt be worth a call to fisheries to clarify. Cheers

Thanks Mike and Chris, Appreciate your comments and help. From Memory the EZ's are resonably easy to spot but I would always carry a map for good order. I have fished the bay before and had good sucess. For the Crookhaven/Shoalhaven i have not fished this area before but my mate has quite sucessfully. By saying this i certainly felt that you would have to work for your fish. Your comments can confirm this. Anyway i have a month or so to decide/plan/dream . . . . thanks again fr your help. Tim

Hello Raiders, I am looking at spending a couple of days in September fishing either Jervis Bay or the Crookhaven/Shoalhaven river systems. Will be mainly targeting your standard estuary options being faltties and bream with bait and rubbers. Will have a boat so can cover a bit of water. I would apprecaite any advice anyone can provide. They appartently will work for bream (probably other species as well), especially in situations where fresh water runs into the salt. The theory is that garden worms will get washed into the salt after heavy rain and therefore in some ways form a natural part of the food chain. I have however tested this theory twice at one of my bream haunts with NO sucess - so i am yet to confirm whether the theory is true. Cheers Moro Mou

We only trolled lures as the last few times i have fished with bait i couldn't escape the jackets. I have perfected my fishcake recipe with them (thanks to Tan the fisherman) but was after somthing different today. It was a cracker of a morning weather wise regardless of the lack of fish.

"THE barometric pressure has been very low (1009) so the fish are off the bite" Hi Tan - yes did notice that it was 1001 when i was driving to the ramp but still coming to grips with planning trips around the Barometric pressure. When i get a window of opportunity i generally take it regardless.

Raiders, Had a quick session am today with fellow raider Hugeted. We gave north head a bash (trolling) and then did a few runs closer to home off washaway beach/dobroyd. Landed 1 tailor and dropped another close to the boat but that was it. Water temp ranged between 16.4 and 16.9. Saw a few boats heading around Sth head so maybe they had more luck. Would be interested to know if anyone had any sucess. cheers moro mou

You did do very well - good work. I was also out on Sunday and also trolled north head for zip. Then as soon as we tried bait bashing the pesky jackets moved in. Isn't it time for these little fella's to go away!!

Hello Bergo, I am by no means a carp specialist but suggest the following: - Rig: standard runner sinker rig - Sinker: as little weight as the creek conditions allow. - Hook: small long shank say size 1 - bait: garden worms or my personal favorite corn kernals (tinned) - berley: chopped worms with a bit of sand or a handful of corn kernals Hope this helps and good luck. I have seen a few people collect the gill rakers from big barra as a trophy before and have certainly heard about the "Jewie Jewels". Maybe slightly off topic but do any of you know whether the "gillrakers" from a barramundi give can be used in a similar fashion to determine age and size of the fish. Thanks Moro Mou

Mindi, As Hodgey said Cherabin are found up north. I have caught them using opera house nets sucessfully in the past in freshwater billabongs. We used about a handful of dog biscuits as bait. We did not have any problems with them getting out. The only problem we encountered was a large saltwater croc that took up residence in the fresh water. Cheers Moro Mou

After another outing where all i caught were leather jackets i decided i do my best to keep the population down and keep a few to make fish cakes. My wife is not a big fish eater so anyway i can hide the fish a little normally gets positive replys on the eating stakes. This is my latest take on a fish cake recipie. - Leather Jacket fillets (boned) - 1 medium onion finely chopped - 2 chillis (hot) roughly chopped - A knob of ginger finely chopped - A splash of soy sauce - half a cup of corn flake crumbs - Salt and pepper The above was thrown in a food processer with a splash of olive oil. The blended mix was then moulded into small patties, rolled in flour and then shallow fried in olive oil. The sweet taste of the leather jacket combined with the chilli was a winner and the wife went back for seconds. I know some people use Aussie salmon for fish cakes but would be interested to learn other raiders favorite recipies.
