  1. Hello - I am off to 3 kings in NZ next week. Hopefully my report will be half as good as that. Cheers
  2. Hello Raiders, After an early start to attend the dawn service on Sunday by early afternoon i was feeling a little tired. However when a mate called to see if i wanted to go for a fish for some reason i was wide awake. We put the boat in at Mookerawa (near Stuart Town NSW) and commenced a trolling session in very pleasant albeit a little cool conditions. We were trolling jackal style lures in dark colours close to the timber. Action was not exactly hard and fast however my mate managed to use his local knowledge and boat 3 nice yellas to my nil. The other guys we were fishing with (they were in a different boat) managed 6 yellas and a small redfin. All in all a nice way to spend the afternoon. Cheers Sorry pic now added

  4. Apart from adequate lighting as you suggested I find it a good idea to scout the area you intend to fish in daylight hours so you are familar with the area. Also when anchoring it pays to spend the time to ensure you have a firm hold and in paricular if you are fishing over a tide change you are not going to swing and bump into anything. If possible even double anchor. This gives you the peace of mind if you happen to doze off on a slow night . . . .
  5. good topic - soory i have no funny signs though
  6. Heading to Windamere on the weekend and was wondering if anyone has fished it lately. Will be targeting Yella's casting from the shore. Pleased to hear if anyone has any advice. Thanks
  7. We used to dig scrub worms in black soil country in far western NSW. They were normally found near where Myall Trees were growing and hence they were locally called Myall worms. In my opinion they are the best bait for Golden Perch. I don't know where you would get them near Sydney as unfortunately my favorite spots were near Walgett in NSW.
  8. Ingredients 2 smoked medium sized bonito fillets 1 cup of diced bacon 1 grated carrot 1 cup frozen peas 1 large onion diced 1 celery stick diced 1/2 cup of chopped parsley 1 tin of light coconut cream 4 - 6 potatoes (depending on size) 1 cup grated cheese Salt and Pepper Olive oil Method Smoke seasoned bonito fillets preferably 1 day in advance. Add diced potatoes to boiling salted water and cook until tender for mashing. Brown onion in a fry pan with a little olive oil and then add bacon and celery. Cook for a few minutes before adding peas, carrot and flaked and bones removed smoked bonito. Again cook for a few minutes before adding the tin of coconut cream and simmer gently for 5 minutes. Add parsley and stir through. Scoop mixture into a greased deep sided pie dish trying to avoid putting in too much of the liquid. Retain excess liquid. Use the retained liquid to mash the potatoes and then add mash to top of the fish mixture. Sprinkle top of mash with grated cheese and season with pepper. Bake for 10 – 15 mins until cheese is browned and serve. Substitutions Use any smoked fish you like. I have used tailor before. I have also added a small chilli when frying the onions which gives it a nice bit of heat. I hope you enjoy. Cheers Moro Mou
  9. Raiders, I heard there was a news report last night regarding fisheries measuring mats being incorrect. I know this topic has been discussed a few times on fishraider, however did anyone see or hear this news report. Cheers
  10. That is a great job and somthing that i am considering as a winter project. I will pm you a few questions if that is ok. Cheers
  11. Nice report Hodgey from a nice part of Australia. I Love chasing the green fish especially on Spinnerbaits. Sorry the big ones eluded you but it looks like a heap of fun was had regardless.
  12. There is one in every crowd and unfortunately it is somtimes difficult to stand up to people if they are adamant that you are doing is wrong. My suggestion within reason is to always carry one of the fisheries brochures with the bag and size limits on it. They dont take up much room in your tackle box but are prone to getting wet.
  13. Hello Mrsswordie, As carry on i have taken small rods in tubes, ie 4 peice fly rods. For large rods in tubes it is worth checking the max length restrictions with the airline first. I have never had any problems (my large tube is 210 cm but mates with smaller tubes have had issues). Reels are also fine as carry on however sometimes they check for hooks. All other terminal tackle lures, pliers etc i check in my suitcase. The key is make sure your wash/clean your gear and as Welsh Dave said declare it when coming back into Australia. Hope this helps.
  14. Agree with Davemmm - i prefer the head/shoulder first method. Also it you are going to skin the fillets no need to scale first (actually it is easier to remove skin if the scales are left on). Also i don't bother about gutting either if you intend to fillet. Bottom line is use what ever method you are more comfortable with and remember the more fish you catch the better you will become.
  15. Well done on your first kingy and may it be the first of many.
  16. I find that ALL fish eat better if bled on capture. Better still bled on capture and iced down. If you do a search on fishraider i am sure you will find a number of ways to do this but the best for me and probably for the fish is with a sharp knife cut the piece of flesh at the bottom of the head near the gills and snap head back. Some fish you can do this without the knife. Another metthod is the IKI JIMI or brain spike with kills the fish and then it cut be bled by cutting the throat as above. This method is popular with larger fish. I beleive that it doesn't matter what species of fish you choose to eat the preparation between time of capture and the moment you cook it are the most critical to its eating quality. If you look after your catch, even fish that are regarded as having negligible eating qualities, prior to cooking the enjoyment on the plate will be so much greater. Hope this helps. Cheers Moro Mou
  17. I love both those storys Slinky and Ianoc69. A few years back fishing landbased in the NT (well back from the water due to crocs) a mate had an $$$ outfit (calcutta or similar but can't remember) in a plastic rod holder. It was the first day of arrival and camp was still being set up so the rod wasn't being closely watched. When my mate did go to check the rod it had vanished so he was left scratching his head. 4 days later and again bank fishing he hooks a dead weight and low and behold his rod and reel reappears. There was no fish attached but at least he got it back.
  18. I like Callala Bay ramp but also don't mind Murray's but it is a further drive. I have never launched there when busy either so take David's comments on board. Get maps of the exclusion zones as even though they are marked better to be 100pct sure. As for any fishing tips - on my last trip we were blown off the water so very little hit the deck of the boat. Have previously had sucess drifting for flatties near Booderee naval waters but again read up on the restictions. Hope this helps.
  19. Hitting the harbour on Sunday to hopefully open my Kingfish account for this summer. Poor old boat has been dry for over a month so she is keen to get wet.
  20. I agree two dangerous to answer this one. I can say that i am down an outfit after a recent canoe mishap though. It would only be right to replace it.
  21. Gyday Duncs, Great report and catch. A mate of mine regularly raves about the flathead fishing in Tassie. Not that your catch is of concern but it may be worth checking whether they do have size regulations for flatties in Tassie as i was sure they did. Check out http://www.dpipwe.tas.gov.au/inter.nsf/Web...LIR-4YAVA8?open Hope to read more reports like that. Cheers
  22. hello Cameldownunder, Like you i often have fishing time limitations either from wife or due to work if i fish mid week. I also find it difficult when time limited to spend time (often wasting time) collecting/catching bait. Therefore, i do one of three things: 1) Fish lures only - mainly soft plastics but also do some trolling of hard bodies + throw a few metals. 2) Dedicate a narrow window for bait gathering ie 30 mins. If sucessful great if not go back to option 1 or option 3 the frozen option. 3) Using frozen bait - i have plenty of sucess with pilchards but also freeze squid and yakkas that i have caught my self. The key is to freeze the bait as airtight as possible, snap lock bags or even used takeawy containers work well if full and the air is removed. The better quality the bait is when frozen the better it will be when used. Without a doubt fresh is best but you can still have plenty of fun without it. Cheers Moro Mou
  23. Thanks Framedtrash. Actually it did try to get hold of me come to think of it.
  24. Hello Raiders, I went for a very quick flick yesterday evening to try and score a few squid. By quick i mean very quick as i had a self imposed limit of 12 casts due to my waiting wife. Anyway on the 3rd cast a managed a small cuttlefish. As it was tiny i decided that it was better off growing a bit so threw it back. This then made me think - are good bait dead or alive for kings? Would be interested to hear. By the way i ended up having about 15 casts and no squid. Cheers Moro Mou
