  1. got a 10% discount on the tuff tackle from around 380 to 350. Havent seen them in shops elsewhere so not sure how that price compares to elsewhere
  2. Gday Raiders, pretty excited about a couple of new combos i've bought recently so had to share them with someone. A couple weeks ago I bought a new Daiwa Saltist Southern Blue Rod matched up to a Saltist 40H star drag reel for live baiting and jigging. Spooled it with 50lb Tuf Line and can't wait test it out on some Sydney Harbour and Montague Island Kingies Then today went down to the local tackle shop to get another one specifically for downrigging and live baiting the harbour. Guy talked me in to a tuff tackle xta diablo 9000 spooled with 50lb tuf line (haven't heard much about them apart from Al Mcglashan using them, if anyone has one let me know what you think) Matched up to a 7' wilson live fibre 15-24kg stick. The rod's length and tippy end is perfect for manoeuvring kingfish away from the prop compared to the short jig stick like the saltist. Anyway just had to share my new toys with someone Thanks raiders
  3. Hey mate if you are still in the market for a reel im selling a TD Advantage that has been used twice (in perfect condition) one spool with 20lb tufline and one with 30lb tufline. Would be suitable for what you need. It's in the swap and sell section.
  4. We put one on our 115hp yamaha on a 17ft Tabs cuddy cab and the result was outstanding, got on to the plane so much easier would recommend to anyone, except it seems the common wisdom is that each boat responds differently, but for us was a huge improvement
  5. Sorry if this question has been asked before but what did happen to the famous old man's hat. I've noticed it gone for a while and assumed they would replace it shortly. However its still not there?? Anybody know what happened? It was such a reliable spot for kingys...
  6. Gday raiders, Hit the harbour this morning (not too early, around 8) hoping to get in to some fish. Plan was to catch a heap of live bait and hopefully convert in to a solid kingy or two, however this morning was a shocker for me. Spent 45 mins trying to raise some yakkas without so much as a touch or any signs of life on the sounder. So decided to stay inside middle harbour and try soak a few frozen baits for a bream or a trevally. Well the wind was making things impossible, spent the next hour trying to drift pilchards down a berley trail with no weight and the bail arm open, no matter what I did however, the boat was swinging from side to side on the anchor and all three lines seemed to make a beeline for the prop. Had to deal with innumerable tangles and eventually gave it up thinking perhaps North Head would be the go, get there in reasonable time (while it was very windy and choppy there was basically no swell) started trolling two deep diving rapalas and a skirt and in two minutes I get a hit on a rapala, the line instantly went slack and it turned out my braid to mono knot had slipped, $25 rapala lure straight to the bottom because I had tied a crappy knot, persisted however and once again the exact same thing happened on a different rod. That was enough for me All in all a shocking morning for me unfortunately Hopefully next weekend Ill do better Thanks raiders
  7. Nice Kingy John How wide do you have to go when you jig for Kings like that? I've got a boat capable of going offshore but don't have a GPS (yet), just wondering how hard it is to find the jigging grounds off sydney?
  8. was an article in a big fishing magazine this month the inspiration for this topic slinky? because I read an article this morning on the exact subject. It was interesting reading. My limited experience with kingies is the times i've targeted them on light (6-10lb) gear. Most of my fishing is in the harbour and 90% of the kings i catch are only rats and they often can take just as long get to the boat using 20-30lb as they do using 10lb gear. Obviously i've never landed kings of any serious size using the light stuff but find taking the softly softly approach is fun and often more rewarding than using brute force on rat kings
  9. Thanks Matt, thought you might have some advice for me regarding Eucumbene. Yeh its not the best time of year for it (gonna be freezing) but I appreciate the heads up and will certainly be giving the dam wall some serious attention.
  10. Gday raiders Heading down to eucumbene next weekend with a couple mates and was wondering if anyone has been down there recently? Plan is to troll flatlines and lead core early morning and baitfish the arvo. Would love to hear anyone's successes or failures down there recently? Cheers raiders
  11. I'd say 95% of people are going to tell you to get braid. And they're right because the lack of stretch in braid makes it so much easier to stay in contact with your lure and feel every bump. Most you should pay for 120m (which is all you need for sps) of braid is $40.
  12. mud eyes will probably work best atm, couple of mates went down there last week and struggled trolling but got a few on mudeyes and powerbait. Also definitely worth spinning a stiffy vibe from the shore, am having more and more success on the trout with these lures, they cast well and are dead easy to use wish i was going down to euc this weekend....
  13. thanks for the replies guys Roberta it broke because it was sitting up right in a rod holder next to where i was leaning over with the net. As a wave hit the boat i felt myself going overboard and instinctively grabbed something near to me which unfortunately was the rod. Couldnt believe myself after it happened anyway have decided to try and repair the rod
  14. It was a 3-6kg 1 piece and the model number is T610 would recommend the rods to anyone
  15. Today due to a pesky salmon not cooperating and my own poor attempts at netting it and a rolling swell I have broken clean in half my newest most favourite rod, a Berkley ProTactic 1 piece. Im absolutely spewing Im gonna make an assumption that due to the rod being broken about halfway down that it is not fixable and that Berkley aren't going to replace it for me? If anybody knows of a solution other than forking out the dollars for a new one I would love to know?????
  16. Gday raiders went out bright and early this morning from roseville and managed to pick up a few yakkas and slimeys from bantry bay so things were looking ok. No squid as usual but thats a different story. Head to North Head and see it is a carpark as usual. Anyway pick up a couple of small bonnies on the troll and then anchor up near the marker and deploy a couple of livies. Here comes my problem, the way i rig them i just use a running rig with one hook and pin the livie through the nose. I have tried two hook rigs like the sliding snell but they dont seem to let the bait swim as freely. ANyway the problem is that i could not convert one of the many hits i had this morning in to a fish. i left my overhead reels in freespool with the clicker on and when the drag started screaming i would lock it up in to strike drag and the fish would fall off. Does anybody have any suggestions as to a better way to hook up on the buggers?
  17. Went down to Lake Eucumbene last week and as there were 6 of us goin we figured the old 5 mtr quintrex we keep down there wouldn't suffice. So we took our 17ft Tabs half-cab so we could fish out of two boats. The problem with this though was that the new boat was powered by a 4stroke 115hp yammie and the majority of our fish are caught trolling lead core lines down there. The old boat has a 50hp Honda and trolls the lures we use (tassies and vibes) at a reasonable speed but we were worried the new boat wouldnt go slow enough, well we figured we had to give it a go. Headed out the first morning and trolled around on the new boat for about an hr without a touch, then suddenly Dad has the bright idea of putting the sea anchor a couple meters behind the boat. Well it didnt take 10 seconds after deploying the sea anchor that we had a hit and boated our first trout. The sea anchor slowed the boat right down to about 2/3 of the speed the other boat went and for the rest of trip we outfished the other boat despite the fact the guys in the other boat we were using the same lures and working the same areas as us. Anyways just thought i'd tell raiders about this idea because the anchor cost about $40 so is a lot cheaper than buying an electric (which would be impossible for our boat anyway). Obviously you don't have total control over your speed than you would with an electric but in this instance the sea anchor worked beautifully. THanks guys
  18. stiffy vibes go really well in the snowy mountains trolled or just slow rolled if ur spinning while jewhunter is right about the losing the odd fish using 4lb fluoro i believe going as light as possible is good because you do tend to catch more and they dont seem to inhale hardbodys like tassies and vibes anyway
  19. Gday Raiders, Went for a session in Middle Harbour last night caught a heap of yakkas and went to sugarloaf in the hope of a jew. However all I could get to eat my livies were big slimy eels, i've never seen eels in MH before was just wondering how common they are?
  20. Hey Jim past couple times ive caught slimies at Bantry Bay along with yakkas by anchoring up and burleying with a bit of bread and jigging a sabiki jig problem for me is i cant keep a slimy alive for longer than 5 mins in my bait tank even when its recirculating
  21. Headed out this morning and started off well managing a few yakkas and even some squid. Anyway cut a long story short tried out all the usual haunts in Middle harbour, north head and some spots in the main harbour and couldnt even get a sniff today. Tried live, dead baits, jigs, sluggos couldnt manage a single rat. Anybody else get in to them today?
  22. Gday Raiders, thought I'd tap in to the vast knowledge that exists on this site again. We have a boat about 18months old and from the day we got it have had issues with the fuel gauge. We have finally sorted out all these problems bar one issue. The tank holds 150L and and on the odd occasion that we actually fill the whole tank the gauge only reads 135L when we reset it to the max (this isnt the main problem I assume its a safety thing or something). The main problem is that say we have 150L in the tank and go out fishing a few times and the fuel level gets down to say 20L. When we go and put fuel in it again the gauge doesnt register the new fuel, the gauge still reads 20L. So the only way can positively know how much fuel is in the tank is by putting 150L of fuel in the tank and resetting the metre and not putting more fuel in it until we are ready to fill it all the way back up again. What this means is that when we go out for a quick harbour sesh we can't just top the fuel up with a few litres to know exactly how much is in there. Does anybody know how to fix this problem? sorry if the question is a bit long winded but i cant think of a more concise way to put it
  23. river to sea knife and searock jigs are really good for the price caught loads of kingys at Montague Island last weekend with them
  24. Gday I just spent a couple of days fishing Montague Island with some mates and we caught a heap of rat kings. While we weren't complaining as it was great fun we started to wonder about what size limits do to the fish population. My friend is certain that in an area so heavily fished as Montague Island (there were about 20 other boats hauling rats in all morning and throwing them back as well) the problem is that as soon as a fish hits 65cm its gonna be kept because everyone got so sick of throwing everything back. It made me think that surely allowing a small bag limit of any size fish would be better for the fish then simply killing all the bigger ones as it would give more anglers a chance to catch big fish, and still have the opportunity to release the biggies because they already had a feed of smaller ones? If this issue has been brought up before and theeres an obvious reason to why this wouldnt work then I apologise in advance but would be interested to hear other raiders thoughts on this?
  25. Great read Roberta Fly fishing the Lake is too much for me seems as soon as i pick up a fly rod the entire lake shuts down But always loved trolling and spinning Eucumbene its my fav place to fish Always keen to hear about other people's experiences down there Good stuff
