  1. Love the persistance, I recall sitting in a 30knot southerly on North Narrabeen to with sand shredding every piece of exposed skin to fight a jewie for 10 minutes only to have the line popo with the fish in sight in the breakers. Seaweed gives a great fight, especially when there is a decent swell!!
  2. Good luck with the Jewies, unfortunuately I don't have much of a say as soon as the sees a fresh squid unless they are the smaller ones (thankfully the good sized ones for bait)
  3. That is what I was thinking, with daylight saving now gone the after work session is not as easy to acheive but will be having a crack at squid and kingies over easter in between rain showers (after it wouldn't be easter without rain)
  4. Tried a squid bash land based in middle Harbour, found the harbour full of boats of all kinds, a muddy concoction that is supposedly the harbour and a strong breeze to cast into . Following several missed hits from squid and several casts where I had to sidestep an airborne jig blowing back at me I gave up and look forward to the Harbour looking better for easter.
  5. I have used different set ups all with success at hooking kingies/tailor/jew/salmon with live yakkas, off the beach or other land based try a sliding snell double hook in a paternoster set up with one hook through the back or eye socket and one through near the tail, sinker size, this way tailor and salmon will also hook up along side the jewie/kingie. If only after Kingies or jews up the hook sizer and go through the eye socket or jaw. I enjoy in deeper water using a float with the sliding snell and have hooked up kingies and tailor regularly with the yakka set near the harbour floor. Unfortunately my legal Kinige catch and/or keep rate is dismal. As a note I called myself Yakkaman due to my ability to catch Yakkas and nothing else, thankfully I have moved opn a bit and can also catch squid with some success (and some pelagics) I am land based so can't offer advice on trolling or off boats.
  6. Its great when when you find a spot where the whole food chain is catered for (especially the shore based carnivores with a 4/0). I'd be happy with some BBQ calamari alongside some fresh cooked Tailor.
  7. Thats some impressive fish there, mmmm one of these days....
  8. Congrats on the squid, seems like they are still about and a bit hungry those cephalapods
  9. I agree with the aboves but also consider having a lighter natural jig (like a KNH) for low light conditions or areas that have illumination at night, I have had good success at night with the above jig.
  10. That is a nice frigate, they are quite tasty pan fried and make great bait. Good fun on light tackle also. Clifton Gardens land based fishing is generally done off the wharf on weekends join the hordes but pleasant mid week, seen a 70 cm snapper caught here on a prawn
  11. Great photos there, been smashing the squid lately in middle harbour but they have gone a bit quiet over the last week or so, has this been noticed elsewhere also?
  12. An hour goes by an just as dawn breaks, by yakka rig starts screaming. "Oh s**t! Not a kingie on my yakka rig?!!" went through my mind. After about 10 seconds of frantic reeling, my line goes PING. 05.gif Bugger. There's a decent fish going round somewhere in the harbour with a yakka rig attached to its face must be a teenage emo fish I have seen a decent jew caught off there (say 10kg) and a mate caught the biggest bream he has ever seen, he couldn't fit it in a 20 l bucket, and this was on a bait jig. That's whats so good about the spot you can catch anything there.
  13. Awesome whiting there, good feed for you in the near future

    City Fishing

If you want yakkas they are generally availabe under the wharf there, walk about half way along and berly hard, try different depths as they can be tricky, use chicken, pork or beef raw, but the size can vary, have caught yakkas over 30 cm long there.
  15. Just remember that large areas of sydney harbour in particular are intertidal no go zones for collecting bait. Have seen a few people stung for exactly that around Manly
  16. Fished the lake at christmas and found only small tailor, snapper and bream. There are apparently whiting near the entrqacne but they are well versed on avoiding fishermen. Best bet is the beach near the entrance, drive through the caravan park and take the walkway to the beach, find a gutter monring or evening and good luck, we caught some decent salmon. flathead, whiting and tailor there and the beach is full of good beach worms Apparently blackfish can be found in the lake but have no definite spots. good luck with it
  17. Nice tuna there, might try for some pelagics off the rocks and/or a beach session with all the talk about bait fish and pelagics (salmon, tailor, kingfisg etc) off our beaches of late due to the warm current off the coast lately
  18. good catch of squid, amazing how you can spend hours for zip then in 4 or 5 casts get enough for a feed or future kingie/jew session
  19. Have eaten Yakkas in Japan both smoked and pan fried, surprisingly good, not really a delicacy but a regularly eaten food, my understanding is theyfarm the yakkas to a fairly large size and feed them certain types of food to get the specific taste (a bit like they do with Wagyu). Also seen pillies for sale in a supermarket over there
  20. Been doing similar myself lately with the green eyes, keeping the smaller ones (and the heads of the larger ones) for bait and eating the bigger ones, caught 12 in three sessions and had one big run on a live squid I threw out (felt like a Tailor). Having more squid tonight for dinner as per instructions.
  21. Nice catch of frigates there, they give a good fight on light gear and are pretty tasty pan fried with some soy sauce and butter.
  22. Nice fish there , hoping for similar tomorrow

    Rats

having our work move office from the Harbour (with fishing regularly available during lunch etc) I am feeling a little jealous. And having not cought a kingie at all yet this season (been away for a while) even a rat would be welcome
  24. Following return from a trip to Japan where I purchased a few good squid jigs (actually received them as gifts), mainly yamashita and yo zuri's I went squidding in middle harbour land based this afternoon. This follows on from multiple efforts to catch squid with cheap jigs. After about an hour of trying all the old tricks I finally got success with three squid caught in quick succession, much to the delight of a social school group kayaking nearby. Although the two smaller squid are ideal for future baits, the took control and they are being turned into sashimi and salt and pepper squid. Great to finally have success and not have to rely on live yakkas to catch squid (with difficulty and I'd rather the kingie the yakka was intended for ). Hoping the success continues and will only use Japanese jigs for ever now
  25. Was in Shibuya recently at Joshuya and Sensui tackle shops, had to leave as drool was flooding the stores, with exchange rates as they are unless the items are Japanese market only there is not much difference in prices (untill Aussie prices rise of course). Unfortunuately my budgetted only extended to some new yamashita and yo-zuri squid jigs and a Penn Spinfisher 6500 SS J reel from 1999. The range of squid jigs alone is worth the price of admission (ticket to Narita, Tokyo's airport)
