  1. use this as a guide replace the sinker with a 150-200gm jigg (this will also help attract the fish) and replace the lure with a livie and use some strong line
  2. all a downrigger does is hold your bait/lures at a depth you set so when using lures you can get bib less lures and run them at the exact depth you want them to run you can run the boat at any speed you want as the lure isnt doing the work of keeping it at depth the downrigger is if you use lures that dive you just need to work out how deep there diving on the own then lower the downrigger to the depth you want to fish at downrigging is a great way of catching flattys on lures simply use a lure that will dive about 2mtrs then set your bomb about 2mtrs off the bottom as you troll around the lure is going to be hitting into the sand and puffing up sand grabbing the flattys attention
  3. just use a jigg head the big worm hooks are more for surface work and work around weed beds and they can be a pain i just use a jigg head thats the right size for the sluggo im using
  4. you would really have to watch yourself with only a 35 on the back would be fine on perfect days but you really need the power of a larger motor for if and when the weather changes and you need to get back in a hurry i venture outside when ever i get the chance but with a 75 on the back i feel alot safer but we have no bar crosses around me so ive never done one and im not in a big hurry to give one a try
  5. so true if you must use yakkas just do what greg suggested i dont like to use heavy sinkers with the yakkas i just use enough to hold the yakkas in the one spot i like to put out as many as i can one on the bottom one mid water and one on a ballon or just do as Ceph said and just put out some live squid
  6. i had a mate pull in a 110cm kingy off curly a few weeks back it was massive fell to a live yakka
  7. i upgraded my handle on the weekend am yet to test her out on a fish but im sure its going to be alot better on the hands after a few hrs jigging total cost for the new handle $50 they had forgot to include the counter weight for the bottom of the handle so i sent shimano a email and they r sending it out today it should also eliminate the need to wear gloves while jigging cheers John for the heads up
  8. its a great bait ground for yakkas slimeys and squid
  9. this weekend will just be working on the boat have the whole of next week off work and plan to do as much fishing as possible will be fishing the harbour and pittwater for kings and jews hopefully the weather forecasts are wrong as they are expecting rain pretty much all week but the fish dont seem to mind getting wet so ive got no excuse either
  10. i connect my backing to the reel using the same method as above but as for the braid i first connect the braid to a large alvey i have i then wind the full spool onto the large alvey i then connect the braid off the alvey to the mono backin on the new reel and put the alvey on a reel and put it in a rod holder on the boat i then tighen up the drag on the alvey then just simply wind on the line using the reel takes a little longer but gives you the perfect tension and you can do it by yourself
  11. whats with the paddle handle havnt seen that on a stella in a while only on some of the older imports Ceph give me a bell if you want to sell one of your old stellas
  12. just head outside the heads and look for the carpark no gps required
  13. its a great looking reel not a big fan of the handle tho there easy to upgrade i cant wait to wet a line next week feels like ages since my last fish
  14. that red fish looks like a sargent baker too me and they aint good eating there full of bones
  15. is that the saltist Jordan is using ?? that would be a great reel for spinning off the rocks what size was that king looks almost legal
  16. go with the stella problem with the Saltiga is that first you spend all this money buying the reel then to get full use out of you have to go and spend more money on the upgraded drag the stella is great out of the box
  17. i was referring only to the email roberta has posted "The ACMA recommends recipients of the email delete it and not forward it on to other email users. A variation of this email was previously circulated during March/April 2009. "
  18. ive seen simular ones on fleabay for $420 with the same features pretty neat tho ha
  19. Gday Roberta the email is a hoax i would not advise to enter your mobile number any where online otherwise you might start getting phone calls by putting your number online your only giving them your mobile number this is how they get your numbers and email addresses in the first place they then sell your info to other company's and it never ends
  20. from a shop around $50-60 fleabay around $30-40
  21. yes you can freeze squid just dont put it into fresh water and if freezing try to remove all air from the bag use the zip lock bags if possible try to avoid freezer burn live squid is the bait of choice yes using a heavy sinker to weigh down the baits will work just fine downrigger isnt needed for big squids use a 2 hook rig one hook going threw the top of the mantle and the 2nd hook at the bottom of the mantle for small squid 1 hook threw the top of the mantle is fine you can buy fresh squid but catching your own is free and is offen alot better quality and dont worry about the tides just get out there and catch them
  22. dont think ill be wetting a line this weekend got the big day out tomorrow enjoy ya weekend good luck at the 12
  23. there are a few issues that come with braid if you have a habbit of running your bombs into things your are going to loose them braid will cut on sharp objects unlike wire you have to wash out the braid after every outing just like with your reels salt will build up in the braid and if left unchecked will result in the braid snapping and you loosing your bombs and from time to time you will need to check the knot connections at the bomb to make sure the knot is ok and if not cut the braid and retie there is nothing wrong with braid tho but i prefer wire as i have a lot more confidence its not going to snap and loose my expensive bombs and if i get it snagged on a tree branch underwater instead of praying it wont cut the braid i can simply power on and rip threw the tree and if the hum from the wire gets to you theres ways to fix it simply get a tennis ball make a slit in it and place it on the wire up as close to the downrigger as possible and bamm hum is gone
  24. if you have room on the boat bring as many rods as possible dont have to have them all out just have them rigged up for all situations nothing worse then having only 1 rod and a school hits the surface and you have a 300gm jigg on your only rod i like to always have 3 rods ready to go one with jigg one ready for live bait and another with a big sluggo nothing worse then rerigging in the middle of a shit storm leads to bad knots and loss fish happened to me last weekend still having nightmares
