  5. Got a later start than usual-730 was on the water- not an enormous wait at the boat ramp which i found unusual 4 a public holiday ...anyway- headed out the heads trolled along the cliff up to malabar in search of fresh bait (mac tuna) no luck, next headed to a spot in 60m of water off coogee catching only one mowie .By 930 decided to head to the peak, not that many boats out there either, fished a spot NW of the peak in about 77m of water and caught 4 mowies, one good sea perch. listened 4 any news of the dolllies on the radio but only heard the charter boat operators saying that they were having a slow day... .... put out a spread and trolled from the peak to the fad no luck- did a few passes and still nothing even though the water was 23.7 degrees >stopped next to the fad and burleyed nothing still!....as we drifted away from th fad the sounder showed a good reading...thought maybe kings?!....dropped down a bait got a solid hookup... it gave a bit of curry at the beginnng and then the quick tailbeats of a leathery! were felt...few minutes later sure enough a leathery about 1.5kg was pulled aboard....not wanting to lose gear and to lazy to change to wire dropper headed 4 home round 1230....all in all a good day on the water (weather wise) but still pretty slow with a lot of water in btn fish!! anyone else have any luck today?????? cheers alex

Hey all, Just wondering if anyone has fished down below on the outer reefs of botany bay...like Hargreaves reef or botany bay wide or plonk hole etc...if so dd u catch anything good? i tried the gravel patches in 130m of water off port hacking the other day for bloody chinamens and flatties wth no good mowies showing their faces... r there any fish in the ocean other than chinamens???????????????????????????? cheers, alex
  11. hey mate not a bad catch of fish there......i usually fish (when i do fish the harbour) a spot called northerner which is a reef in 55m of water off north head..its about 3km out.....how far out were u?.....when i do fish it on the weekend it usually so an old charter boats out there....it painted white with red trimming i think
  12. thanx 4 da pointers...look forward to the upcoming season..hopefully it will be a good one!
  13. Not much of a report, just asking for some suggested techniques....like most fishermen fishin for beakies using bridled up slimies in summer i troll around at 1-2knots and have managed to get 6 beakies since i started 2 years ago when i got da blue water fever...not to bad from a 530 quintrex off botany bays offshore reefs...but over the two years have had several missed hook ups. the main point of this enquiry is at wat tension do u troll the slimies... in past ive trolled them at around 1-2kg of pressure just above free spool and give the fish around 4-5 secs before i hit them and hope the circle hook lodges in the corner of his mouth... the reason i ask is that a fishing monthly mag said to fish them a fraction under strike... so for the 15kg class i use thats 4kg of drag when the fish takes the slimy....would this increase my hook up rate??????
  14. Sounds like a good day on the water mate... shame about murphy's reef usuaully produces some good fish, caught some good mowies a week ago there... sounds like that run may have been a noah?!...also live baited at murphys last week caught 3 rat kingies...when u live bait do u use paternoster rigs?wat line class do u use?i use 80lb braid, a circle hook and 100lb trace... but still have been busted up!
  15. Decided to venture to sydney harbour.. change of surroundings from the usual botany bay. Swell was a bit lumpy as we ventured out but there was no wind so things were looking good. Logged on the GPS and hit a spot in about 53m of water with a bottom structure of very hard and rugged reef. In about 1hour of fishing pulled up 5 good sized mowies all averaging round 1-1.5kg. Things slowed down, so headed to manly wide in 60m of water pulled up another 2 mowies round about the same size... geez i love these fish they give a great tussle Round about 10 things became really slowed and in the space of 1hour pulled up one sea perch, a good flatty and 2 average chinamens. Throughout the day burleyed up for mako sharks using pillies, bread, cat food and tuna oil but didnot attract anything. Decided to head home at 11 30 a good day on the water bagging 11 good eating fish in all.
  16. We were in a 530 quintrex cuddy.. dont remember seeing u. Whats this about the fishraider flags? Need to get me one
  17. Went out yesterday and faced with the decision to go north or south. After weighing up the options decided to head north. First stop was 45m gravel beds of cape banks. First bait down produced a good flatty, after one and a half hours scored 19 flathead all a good size. Decided to head to greener pastures with the bite slowing, off to the 6 mile reef. Here we only scored bloody flowerpots , so headed to the peak- nothing there also ( i think its been fished out.. its gets worse every time i go there- gone r the days of the good mowies out there) Next Tried a wreck in 70m of water, HMAS encounter and only caught small nannygai's and 5 chinamens. With the wind pickin up headed home with a decent bag of flatties and leatheries, not a bad day in all. Heading off the harbour on the weekend... anyone caught anything good on the reefs off there?
  18. where bouts at longie u get them? were u wide?what bait were u using?
  19. Plan A for saturday was to head to the peak, traps and hargreaves reef about 10km out but the 15knot sourtherly stopped us from doing so. Switched to plan B head to the close in gravel beds off maroubra beach in 45 metres of water. As we motored around cape banks mutton birds and sea gulls everywhere. Pulled out the spinning sticks but only managed one hit in a half hour of spinning. Hit the gravel at 830. First bait down a good flatty, next pestered by a little one. As i was bringin him up noticed he was followed by a good sized chinamen. Looked at the sounder and a good size markin showed up. Looked like chinamens were below so changed to wire droppers wth size 2 double strength suicides. For the next 2 hours the bloody leatherjackets were everywhere. Not bad size round 1 kg with the odd 1.5kg added in. Also managed 3 good flatties in between them. Note: even though the southerly wind was blowing at 18 knots we hardly moved cause the current was moven southward at 1.5 knots- no need for the parachute anchor as the wind and the current negated each other. Decided to head back to the bay at 12 30, ended up with 17 leatherjackets and 4 flatties in the killl tank. Not a bad day but have not caught a decent sized "good" fish (morwong/snapper) in months! anyone caught any of these desireable species recently on the reefs?
  20. went yesterday despite the 10knots wind outside. Headed off maroubra in search of salmon schools. spotted hundreds of mutton birds about a km out and decided to troll skirts up the coast for zilch. Logged on the GPS and decided to hit a spot in 45m of water on a gravel bottom. Caught 4 good flathead before the chinamens came on. Changed to wire droppers and caught a stack of them- keep 19 which ranged up to 1.5kgs. on the way home came through the heads and spotted schools of salmon working baitfish. Threw 20g raiders at them and caught 12 between the 2 of us in about an hour of spinning. anyone else fishing outside botany bay?
  21. Yeh sorry about the typo, what i meant to say was wall to wall nannygai. First time ive ever encountered them so close to shore- about 1km off the cape- and so thick that they showed as a big dark mark on the sounder.
  22. After not being able to get on to the water for a couple of weeks, was eager to go today (sunday 28th). made our way out into the bay where we spotted birds and splashes. After throwing raiders from 10g to 60g, SP and trolled minnows, the end result - nil. Guessing by the splashes and slurping they were most probably salmon, but boy were they finicky. headed out the heads, first spot the 40metre mark off cape banks. Here it was wall to wall nanagis, next moved to a reef off malabar in 80metres of water- dead! Then moved closer in on the sand and bagged 6 flathead all good size around the 1-1.5kg mark. getting annoyed by he small fatties moved to 4 mile reef off coogee for zilch. After an hour of dead action made the course for home spotted a stack of birds under the cliffs but they were just sitting there- big disappointment. all in all an average day in terms of fishing but still good to be on the water
  23. sounds like not a bad session sharky...next time u go sharky i wouldn't mind coming...where is the spot near?wat kind of gear were u using? how big were the raiders?
  24. Managed to get out on the water yesterday with the weather not to bad headed to hargreaves reef in 130m of water. All that was managed was 2 pigfish, 1 morwong and 2 squire as well as a few pesky sweep and chinamans. there was an abundance of red bream about 28cm big which is a good sign. Next moved to the peak positioned the boat on a 60m pinnacle and anchored. Again all that was caught were sweep and the best fish managed were 2 long finned perch. The live bait down the bottom was not touched at all and has not been touched in the past 6 outings .i.e. 6 weeks ago. A commercial long liner was out there as well, while fishing watched them bring up sweep after sweep after sweep maybe commercial fisherman aren't that bad after all at least they get rid of the sweep. Any one else fished outwide or near the peak and caught anything good?
