  1. 50% of male jews are mature at 51.26 ± 1.35 cm.

50% of female jews are mature at 67.86 ± 1.05 cm.

(tried a link but the site won't let me as it links to another forums pdf upload, so search mulloway fecundity)

its the females you have to look after as they're the ones with the eggs. if you know how spawning works its not one male to one female, its a whole bunch of fish releasing sperm and eggs simultaneously so its ultimately the number of eggs that determines the recruitment (there are so many more sperm cells than egg cells), so a limit of 75cm would see a large amount of jews able to grow to maturity and then have one or two breeding cycles before being able to be kept.

it takes about 4-5 years for any certain jew to get to 75cm (give or take a few years for natural variation) so if a limit of 75cm in place it would only take a few years before we started seeing a lot more big jews.

boohoo if you don't get to take a few jews home, there are a lot of other fish in the ocean to catch and keep.

glad someone looked at maturity rates

im all for the size upgrade having never caught a jew bigger than my size 9 shoe (soapie ) but have been busted off by bigger on light gear 9lb line and me getting overzealous

i'd like to think that the one i finally get i can show off to my misses although she doesn't eat fish

    my two cents

  2. my first rod reel was a hand me down from my brother cost him $40 from ****** its was a gansel gancast trigger grip with shimano fx 1 with duel drag adjustment closed face reel still got it too i loved it.

i managed to break the tip a couple of years ago taking her for a run at the nepean river on a branch one thing i did notice now i was older was the rod had like 5 guides on it total.

the line rubbed the blank never cared when i was a kid though

  3. catalinas can be had currently for $279 plus post and a stradic 8000 for $249 at the same aussie online shop in SA :biggrin2: and its under your budget even posted

i can vouch for the catilina med/heavy stick as i have mine matched to a saltist 4500 but if i had it over again id more than likely get a stradic even has spare spool and 13kg drag its better than the 10 drag on my saltist

i run 30lb on the rod even though its rated to PE2

also i use mine for poppers /lures of the stones but have never used it for livebaiting yet

    hope it helps

  4. have you looked at the daiwa catalina 762MH Spin 2 piece 7’6” Med Hvy 1-3oz PE 2 the second piece is 1.75m long so you could take it traveling its also quite happy throwing 18 gram poppers around i have mine paired with a 45oo saltist running 30lb braid but i should have got the stradic 8000 is a top reel with spare spool that can be had for 250 currently both of which come in under your budget of $600 though the rod may be a bit heavy lure weight wise

  5. i know how ya feel its happened to me twice now once at the oatley rail bridge will fishing for bream i was casting just at the very first pylon and a boater wanted to passing drift between me and the pylon they said sorry every time they did it as they did it more than once

the other was at south head while tossing raiders lures a boater decided his squid collecting was more important than my LB fishing i just tossed my as was earlier must have been from 3 metres from the boat they left after 2 squid were boated then an hour or so later another jerk did the same thing !

    sorry for the rant

    cheers mick
