Hey All,

First report in a while, managed to get out with some mates from the club on sunday arvo and trolled some lures along the rocks, water was dirty green but we chased a school of stripies (we think) that had birds feeding about 2km out off maroubra, we figured they were stripeys cause they were moving bloody fast and we coudn't keep up. So we gave up and went back to trolling between malabar and maroubra, total was i think 4 salmon, 3 bonito and one sgt baker lol (went a bit close to the reef on that occasion) dropped a fat salmon next to the boat that was pretty annoying, but hey, that's fishing!

Here's a pic of two of the bonito's that made dinner that night, thai bonito curry, Yummo!

BTW, we were trolling a pink squid and a rapala red and white cd17, the rapala did all teh damage, didn't get a hit on the squidy.

EDIT: Also picked up a rat king, went 55cm

Nice report Gibbofisho, thanks for the info on the lures used.

Bonito are not bad eating, depending on how you cook them. Thai fish curry sounds good !!!

mate there is no secret to trolling i actually find it as one of the easiest forms of fishing.

you may have to look at where your trolling more than what your trolling

yeah mate no real trick, the bonnies seem to hang around the feeding schools of salmon, try trolling through dead mans and around south maroubra, you have to get a bit close to the rocks but its all deep water round there, just have your ratchet on so you can watch where you're going and steer the boat out to see as soon as she sings!

Try varying your trolling speed, drop your lure next to your boat to see what speed is best to get some good action going - ie the fastest you can go without popping it out of the water. Try getting closer to the wash off the rocks, just don't get too close !!!

we went through the whole tackle box...tried skirts, sp, rapalas but no luck on the troll...so drove to the school cut the engine and casted with 40g raiders....took ages to get a hit...it was only after hundreds of casts we got it and it as the only one 4 the day.....good fght tho took about 15mins to boat

I have never caught a bonito on a trolled lure. Better try for them next time I am out. Those stripeys sound real cool. How are they on a plate?
