Hoodlums Of Sydney Harbour

I only got 1 fish out of that mooring so there are atleast 2 kingies out there in middle harbour :074: . All jokes aside I release most of the fish I catch. But I got an order from the the inlaws for some sushi/sashimi and kingies are good for that.

As for catching those hoods in sydney it is all about dedication and specialisation. There are guys on this site who target monster jews, yellowfin tuna, bream, flathead etc. These are no flukes. The experienced guys are normally only too willing to share their information....provided you approach them appropriately. Ask the right questions and you will pretty soon be on the way.

I owe a lot of my success to the pros who work Sydney day in day out and fellow fishermen. You also learn so much more when the fishing is difficult. Those fishless days are great teachers. The mistakes you make are the best learning tools you have!!! So get out there and have a go! Cheers Kelvin

Very well put mate, catching fish you target does take time and to be honest takes knowing some good fisho's, i would know nothing if it wasnt for a handful of pro's who sent me in the right direction, it took me atleast 10 trips of persistance to get my first king, but i didnt give up and kept on trying.

I can only gather that you have spent hours and hours sounding out different parts of our harbour in search of some good kingy grounds.

Great to see you getting some great results, too many fisho's just go out hoping to nail a king without doing any research.

You dont wanna know how many times i have followed the pro's into middle harbour once i have spotted them, shi.t it could be called stalking but i always wanted to know where they were fishing.

One thing i got told when i first started fishing seriously is that 10% of fisho's catch 90% of the fish and i made it my mission to get into that 10%.

Great stuff Kelvin and i look forward to meeting you one day and having a chat.

I'll have those two in the boat by weeks end. :074:

Been targetting these brutes for some time now and I reckon they are just about the perfect fish!! Go like the clappers and beautiful to look at. Still not sure how to cook em right yet, haven't tried them raw but by the sounds of it doesn't look like a bad option.

Once again Netic you are spot on with your comments. I was too young and missed out on the kingfish jigging boom in the 70's and 80's. But I did get a good grounding in fishing as a youngster as a couple of older people took me in their wings and showed me how things worked. Pretty soon I was addicted.

I was fortunate to have lived in Swansea in the 90's and there was some good kingfish in that neck of the woods.20kg plus fish was nothing in those days! But the kingfish traps and the relentless mullet netting took its toll and for a while it wasn't worth pursuing these fish.

When I came back to Sydney I had to learn things all over again but the traps were taken out and the fish were around in good numbers. By chance I got to know a couple of charter operators from the work I do and things just clicked.

There was new tackle and techniques which were far superior to what we used to have and with the coming of a couple kids I started to work the kingies again. Fishing has been a great activity for me and my children and it is all quality time.

Yep I have spent hours sounding out the harbour and it has been worth it!!! Cheers Kelvin

Steaming them is a great way to eat them or baked in foil. Cheers Kelvin

namesay im just askin do u catch the kingies past the spit or mostly before dats all i wnna kno i dun wnna kno ur secret location just that please and thanks alot hope to see u on the water this weekend mate

With kings in inshore waters we definitely have a peak in the summer months. In summer especially February they are found everywhere in the harbour. All the ususal spots like north head, south head, buoys and markers will hold fish at some time. However, in winter and early in the season these areas will not hold fish. Most of the fish move into off shore reefs in deeper water >70meters in the cooler months where we target them with jigs and deep set livies but some fish remain as residents in the UPPER reaches.

You will find kingfish ALL year at Cowan creek, Pittwater and middle harbour. Cowan was particulary good this winter season. These waters have hardly any fresh entering them and I think that is why they are there. Also these waters are very deep, with little current and have lots of their favourite food the squid. I think most of the fish we are getting at the moment are the resident fish. They are just a bit more active that the water temps are rising.

At the moment the action is happening west of the bridge. But this can change over night as the harbour is getting some of the travelling fish and a school can enter the harbour even as you read this! By the way I think I will be fishing pitty this weekend. Cheers Kelvin

I am sitting in London at the moment reports like this make the fact i have not been out in the boat for over a month very difficult to deal with.BUT i will be back on the water next weekend and your report has me VERY excited.

Top effort- your persistance clearly paid dividends.

Yeah my boat is Ok but I am getting a bigger 6.2 meter boat in the next months or so. I have been waiting for this new boat for almost 6 months. It is killing me. I am off to brisbane in a couple of weeks to check on its progress but really can't wait. This will be my 6th and hopfully last boat. I do all the launching and retrieving by my self and have had no problems. Cheers Kelvin

Hi Namesay,

nice report and well done on your consistency. I launch from roseville and have just started to get back into the fishing thanks to the new boat. I went out a few weeks in the rain and wind with no luck. Your report gives me incentive and i think kingfish will be my targeted fish. I have caught 2 previously and would love to start building on that.

One question, i known some spots to target squid in the harbour but they are around the kelp beds closer to middle head (thanks to a charter I went on with some friends last year) but I have no idea where to target them in between the spit and roseville, do you find your squid west or east of the spit or both?

Thanks to your reports I know the kingies are there so there is definitely lots of incentive.

Kingies are great sushimi, i went to a resturant near pyrmont 2 weeks ago, damn i can't remember the name but it was in japanese, in english the translation of the name was kingfish. I had lots of it as sushimi, I actually prefer it to salmon or tuna.

Great work and keep em coming

Manama

P.S if you see a white and maroon freedom escape at roseville or on middle harbour come over and say hello

Catching squid is the single biggest obstacle to catching kingies!!!! You can catch squid just about anywhere. The kingies are obviously in middle harbour BECAUSE the squid are there. So you can target the squid just about anywhere there is some weed, reef etc. I do favour fishing the kelp beds as the squid seem to be more prolific but just throw your jigs anywhere there is some bait and you will score.cheers Kelvin

Dan- I haven't targeted the arrow squid much but I find they are more common at night. I do find that the kingies have mostly arrow squid in their bellies and recently a lot of fish. One kingie I caught last week had a whiting in it as well as yellowtail.

That deep sluggo technique is a real effective way to target kingies. I used to use it all the time in winter when the squid were too BIG rather than the small ones we have now. I wrote a couple of reports in August but since it did not have any photos it didn't get much attention. I used to throw out the sluggo in Middle Harbour after fishing outside or chasing salmon on the way to the ramp. I scored a fish almost every time.

I put the sluggo on a short trace with a sinker- I think it is called a carolina rig - as it I believe it gives it more action. Working sluggos can be tiring. As I am lazy I like to let the squid do all the work if I can.

I got to give garfish a go. I used to use dead ones on the rocks ages ago and the kingies used to hit them hard. Maybe I can get my little ones to specialise in garfish?Cheers Kelvin
