Hoodlums Of Sydney Harbour

G'day raiders. I went out today to chase my favourite quarry the good ole kingie. Lately it seems everytime I go out, the weather turns into crap! :05: Today the weather was awful with wind and piddling rain but the kingies are there waiting so I decided to go out. I had my nearly 4 year old son with me as he LOVES fishing.

Catching squid was a real pain today as they were not on the go. After what seemed like an eternity I caught a couple. One was a nice bait sized squid and the other was a larger squid. Like Pittwater, lately the harbour has a lot of very small squid. We saw lots of them but they are waaay too small to take our jigs.

With these baits I went to downrig for kingies. It was a very trying day as the fishing was slow. One of the good things about downrigging is that you get to know the bottom topography REALLY well. Trolling at 1-2 knots is ideal for sounder performance and soon you get to know all the holes and drop offs etc.

I tried the moorings in middle harbour and after about an hour with the small squid I spotted 3 kingies sitting under a moored yacht on my sounder. They were not in a co-operative mood. I tried several different angles and changed the depths but they did not play. I left them for a while and came back after a lunch break and WHACK the squid takes off. I got my son to land this fish. It wasn't too bad at 83 cm.

I got the larger squid out on the downrigger and tried a couple of other places all for nought. By this time my little one was getting just a tad tired. He fell asleep on the boat. However, I wanted to try one of my spots where a reef comes really close into shore. I tried pass after pass KNOWING there are fish there but no takers. I thought about packing it in as we had a fish but the squid was so hard to get it wa a shame if it wasn't eaten by a kingie!!!

Just one more pass I thought and lo and behold I hear the thunk of the downrigger clip letting go and my Shimano T curve rod bends right down to the butt and the reel screams. This rod is rated for 24kgs so it takes a pretty good fish to bend it right down like this. I just left the rod in the holder and drove the boat out to deeper water. The fish was trying to make it to othe reef but I had beaten him to it. It ran hard and really gave the 50lb braid a good stretch. SLowly but surely I won more line and landed the fish. IT was over a meter probably 105cm as my ruler is only a meter long! It pulled the scales just shy of 8kg.

Thanks to all the raiders for their kind words. This is what makes this site the best there is.

Believe it or not there are BIGGER kings in and around the harbour. There are legitimte 20+kilo fish around. A mate of mine got a fish over 20kg in Pittwater last year! These fish are very well educated as you can imagine and getting one to hit a bait or a lure is almost as difficult as amputating your own limb!

Kingies are found all over the world and in heavily fished areas, the bigger fish really can't be caught on a line and a reel. I have spoken to guys from california and they regularly spear fish over 10kg but can't catch one that size on a baited hook. Same goes for Japan/korea. Perhaps it reflects the country but I think the NZ kingies are a bit stupid as they regularly get fish over 40kgs over there :074: .

I guess now that the pros are out of Syd harbour the bigger fish will be around and the banning of the traps should help address some of the issues.

Yes I do get kingies regularly as I fish for these fish almost exclusively. I also fish often and now that the days are warmer and longer, I'll try to fit 2-3 trips a week. It is just a matter of stats. More time on the water = more fish!

And Kabz- if you want to know where the kingies and squid are they are in the water mate!!! Seriously if you buy any fishing map and or book it will list ALL the spots around the harbour. SYdney harbour has been fished more extensively than any other waterway in oz for over 200 years. If you really can't work this out then all you need to do is follow one of the charter boats. :biggrin2: Cheers Kelvin

Kelvin,

It seems as though you get the results that so many are after.

I am sure that it is through spending long hours on the water.

Well done on another great day out.

Excellent report mate, descriptive and informational. Some very good fish, a king over a metre inside the harbour is a good effort.

Your little fella did not seem too keen to hold the fish up !!! Perhaps he was scared cause it was almost as tall as him. You should also start him on the weights, so he can lift the biggens up.

All jokes aside, you seem to have the kingies sussed out in the harbour, well done.

If you are out on Saturday morning, I will definately see you out there. What type of boat do you have? Guess what boat I have ? :biggrin2:

Nice work Namesay, now please go on a holiday or something and leave some for the rest of us! :1prop:

I only got 1 fish out of that mooring so there are atleast 2 kingies out there in middle harbour :074: . All jokes aside I release most of the fish I catch. But I got an order from the the inlaws for some sushi/sashimi and kingies are good for that.

As for catching those hoods in sydney it is all about dedication and specialisation. There are guys on this site who target monster jews, yellowfin tuna, bream, flathead etc. These are no flukes. The experienced guys are normally only too willing to share their information....provided you approach them appropriately. Ask the right questions and you will pretty soon be on the way.

I owe a lot of my success to the pros who work Sydney day in day out and fellow fishermen. You also learn so much more when the fishing is difficult. Those fishless days are great teachers. The mistakes you make are the best learning tools you have!!! So get out there and have a go! Cheers Kelvin

Man!! I think I live on the wrong side of the tasman. I hope you'll still let me in the country so that I can have a crack at some of those "juvenile" kings  Cheers Kelvin
