Brown's Bashing

G'day Raiders,

After 13 weeks grounded from the weather it was time to take the boat out for a spin out wide. Hit the water around 6:30am and gathered some Yakka's then headed out. Conditions were quite choppy with plenty of whitecaps but we stood firm that it was going to drop off around 10:30 - 11:00 as predicted by the majority of sites.

Within 5km of heading out we spot a Whale 100m in front of the boat. He soon ducked under so missed out on photo's. But then 1 minute later after setting off again an absolute monster emerges with a baby next to it. This thing was huge the size of a truck :1yikes: the pictures just don't do it justice.

We trolled from the Shelf to Brown's for naught and arrived at Brown's around 9:00am. Got the new Reef Queen geared up after spooling it with 1000m of 100lb braid earlier this week. The bait of choice was squid which cost $22 per kilo so the plan is to next week head out at night to some of the inshore reefs and fill the boat with those Ceph's.

First drop was Dad (addicted Fishraider guest) who after a long drop pulls in two Gemmies which he gaffs himself  Both measuring 82cm and weighing 4kg each. A quick bash on the head with the baseball bat after Dad got severely bitten by those razor teeth and we were ready for photo's.

Over the marks again and Worwick's turn. He gets hits as soon as he hits the bottom and pulls in two very nice Gemfish at 90cm and 92cm weighing 5.8kg and 6kg. Although the wind dropped right off while bringing the fish in and hopes were high for plenty more fish 5 minutes later back up to 10 - 11 knots.

P.S. Check out Worwick's new broomstick he bought cheap off eBay :074:

Next drop was mine and hookup on hitting the bottom. Plenty of weight to the fish and after winding 40 odd metres the Reef Queen starts to spin and lose line. Must be a bloody big fish or been Sharked. No, we've drifted over the top of the mountain and the fish has swim into the reef and snagged me :ranting2:

With the wind still howling we troll to the Peak then race in with a few Dolphins around. After an hour at the ramp trying to get the boat out of the hole in the wall in BB we get home after swapping cars to the 4WD.

Took some photo's of the fish on the Brag Mat using Netic's classic feet in the picture snap.

penguin

Thats a sea anchor, also known as a drouge anchor.

They are used to slow the boats drift down.

Top peice of equiptment.

When using a sea anchor for best results let out about 10meters of rope.

Bloody oath mate :puke:

Penguin that is a sea anchor in the pic.

Kiwi Dan no they didn't as we were the gloves so we can hold the line and feel the bites once down the bottom. So they couln't bite into the skin when we had them on.

Nice fish!! Great report.

WHat a bonus the whales were!! Good shots. I was just saying we should be keeping an eye out for them coming up the coast - on a good day, we can see them from our front balcony ...... with binoculars.....! :1prop:

Cheers
