So i was on the bus coming home this afternoon, and i thought "its such a beautiful afternoon, i'll go for a fish"

now the idea was to try this new spot ive had my eye on (now my own Spot X!) so i head on down to Spot X :1prop: and i know there is plenty of yellowtail around, so i throw a touch of burley out, have a yellowtail within the minute, put him on a hook, send him out under a float, i havnt even put the rod down yet when i notice the float has disappeared?!

just as that happens, the rod is bent in half, i notice this and think... wtf. then the line starts peeling... and peeling... and peeling.... and peeling.... and peeling and im like wtf.... i was standing there grappling this rod going wtf is going on, then i upped the drag a bit played pump and wind for 5 or so pumps, and the drag is tight as anything now, and our not-so-little friend is heading strait for the structure! next thing you know..... ZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz and he takes probably another 20m of line (the first run taking about 30m i'd say)

next thing you know.... ping. ah well, ive only been at the spot approx 5 minutes! im so pumped, hands are shaking, so i start bringing the line slack in, and get it in, only to have my livie, my hook, my little beads i have on the leader, the entire leader, the float, and all the swivels are gone!!!!!!!! so now there is some massive kingy out there, with a metre and a half of leader, a bright orange with silver float, and all my swivels and snap swivels hanging from his mouth!!!! if anyone catches him, please return my gear, that was my favourite float!!! where the line was snapped it was all roughened up, he got me on the structure!!!!!

anyways, so i get another yellowtail, out he goes (this time on the rod with 60lb mainline) but he was a bit big, so i try and catch some smaller yellowtail, as i am trying, i catch an even bigger yakka, i get him up, i unhook him, throw him back in, and what happens.... a massive kingy (i'd call it for 80cm+) comes up to the surface and smashes him infront of my very eyes, about 1 metre below me (probably 30cm below water surface), only about 20cm out from where i am standing!!! i see him cruising around a little bit more, get my livie in a bit closer to the action and where i am, but alas he didnt take :(

needless to say i am getting up early tomorrow to give it another crack!!!!!

also, i was using 25lb mono and i wanted to see how tight the drag was, in order to get the drag to give some line, i almost cut my hand with the fishing line!!!!!!!! :1yikes::1yikes: what a monster he must have been!!!!!!!!!!1

There is only one Spot X.

You guys should change yours to Spot L for "lost King". :biggrin2:

Seriously though, what a great hookup!!! Big fish from the land are an adrenalin pumping bag of fun!

You must have cast your yakka right on top of him!!

One thing I noticed in your report was the mention of snap swivels etc. Try not using any other tackle than a hook. One knot in your system is better than three. :1prop:

hit the same spot for about 3 hours this morning for zip. yellowtail were even hard to come by!! i think they had enough of my bait jigs and were over it by then haha. one of my yakka's got taken, balloon disappeared.... then it appeared, no fish on the end :(

im sure if i threw some fresh squid out there it would be on for young and old. i'll have to go catch some and give it a go!!!

p.s. i was getting all muddled up today in the tackle, you're right, i need to lose alot of it! i had it for ease of use (snap on a sinker, snap off a sinker etc) but as im landbased and space isnt an issue, i think i will just spread my stuff out from now on and tie everything and take my time! thanks for the tip ceph

The knots are always the weakest link. Kings have a habit of breaking snaps. I am a big fan of the single knot. :biggrin2:
