The body of a fisherman has been found floating off the NSW mid north coast.

The 46-year-old man's body was found at the southern end of Nobbys Beach at Port Macquarie at about 3.45pm (AEST) on Friday 6th June.

His fishing gear was found on nearby rocks.

It was not clear whether the man, from nearby Telegraph Point, had been swept off the rocks or fell into the water, police said.

A post mortem examination will be held at Taree hospital on Tuesday.

Poor bloke.

Hopefully people steer clear of rock fishing if the waves are too dangerous, although there are always some who take the risk!

He may of also had a heart attack and fell in, can't rule that out.

Hope all the best for the family he left behind.
