Scent Blazer Lures
Hey Guys and Girls, Recently we have been testing the use of circle hooks in skirted trolling lures with great success!! we have only been using them on Dolphin fish and Kingfish but we are almost certain it will work on marlin. Whats your thoughts on using circles in skirted lures? Bellow is the link to our results and thoughts. http://scentblazer.com/MyScentBlazer/Articles/CirclesForSuccess.aspx Tight Lines Andrew SBC
wacko
You running very light drags on the lures? I have thought about it, using circles on the lures, have'nt tried yet but must give it go!.......... We normally go alright on hook-up conversion on normal stiff-rigs....single or double-hook....., can't seem to pry-away from that convention.. Wack'
pjbink
It doesn't seem likely to me. Circle hooks are designed to latch onto to the jaw hinge as the hook is pulled out of the mouth. With lures they won't hold on to them long enough or swallow them deep enough for circles to work the way they are intended. I think a single J hook is the go for billfish with most of the barb filed down and rigged stiff in relation to the line. PS: a single hook is much safer for the angler if you are going to release fish. Edited January 26, 2013 by billfisher
Jewhunter
I read an article up this way about an experienced crew doing a similar experiment. What they have ended up with is cutting the turned down part of the circle hook off & grinding/filing the new point razor sharp. The other thing they have done is use match sticks in the head of the lure to ensure that the hook point is always facing upwards, much like a soft plastic jighead runs. Only a single hook is used & the hook up rates have improved to 9 out of 10 hits with a lot less hooks thrown during the fight. Well worth looking into for Scent Blazer I reckon. Cheers, Grant. Jewhunter
Might work, but it's really no longer a circle hook doing this. True. But the wider gape & turned down point would surely help. It's worth a try. Cheers, Grant.
Evets
Gama SL12 hooks would fit the bill for those using 15 KG or less. The have a realitively wide gape and have a turned down point. And they can be easily straightened on the leader should you wish to release the fish
Scent Blazer Lures
All Good points, I think something like the Gamakatsu Inline-point Circle Octopus Hook would suit it more i think. its a fairly light gauge wire with a wide gape and small turned in point. What do you think?
