Green Water Marlin... Now with video!

The day started as any other; we left the berth and headed for north Sydney where we picked up the rest of the crew then off to the fuel wharf. A quick fuel up and all the gear sorted we loaded our Scent Blazers chambers with bait and headed up the harbour.

Picking the crew up for another days game fishing...

As we rounded north head we were greeted by excellent conditions that felt fishy!! Our plan was to run north east via the Sydney FAD then pass the Manly Hydraulics Buoy and head north east in search of what seems like the elusive marlin...

As we approached the Sydney FAD the water seemed green and lifeless, no birds, no bait and as we passed the FAD, no dolphinfish... Seems as though the dollies this year are only holding on floating structure drifting in the current as a posed to fix structure like the FADs.

Pushing up the harbour heading to sea...

With no joy on the FAD we headed nor’ east to the Manly Hydraulics Buoy and with in a mile of the buoy we dropped in a range of Scent Blazer lures, from Nano's to Smalls in a variety of head shapes to colours, purple frigates, sardine, pinks and evils to name a few...

Our first pass resulted in zeros, not even a sign of life, the water was still green and the fish were not to be seen...

See the bait coming out of the chamber, how could a marlin resist that!!

Scratching our heads we decided to swap the lures to a spread of medium to large scent blazers and set the Trollpro in the spread and then head nor’ east in the search of a marlin.. A few miles east of the Manly Hydraulics Buoy the water became extremely fishy with current breaks everywhere and large schools of bait, we knew we were going to get a strike and we weren't wrong!

Manly Hydraulics Buoy, no Dolphin fish this time...

As we passed over a very distinct current break we noticed a tangle on the trollpro, so whilst we were untangling the two lines the right rigger popped the clip and started to slowly take drag... Now this isn't your usual marlin strike, it seemed really lazy as though he was full!

Probably by the amount of bait in the area is as to why he didn't strike that hard or take that screening run.

Note the current where the smooth water meets the choppier water

I've passed heaps of marlin on bait in the past whilst using regular trolling lures and they don't even give the lure a second look but with the Scent Blazer the marlin came up and still had a go at the lure even though he was most probably full, having bait in the lure really does make all the difference, this fish was probably full but it smelt the scent coming out of the back of the lure and switched it on to feeding mode!

After pulling the footage from the Trollpro you can see the marlin coming up behind the lures even in the green water. Seems as though every game fisherman I talk to says you can't catch fish in green water but all our marlin this season have come from green water! If there are signs of marlin or game fish in the area such as bait, current breaks and temp breaks in green water stay there and work the area and see if you can raise a fish. There is no use leaving bait/fish to find bait/fish.

Marlin in the spread, in green water.

The need to find blue water seems like a psychological thing amongst fisherman. It also seems confidence is low when fisherman come across green water, we have had heaps of success in dirty/green water, I think that using Scent Blazer lures and teasers will help the fish find your lures and spread as they drop a fishy scent and fish pieces to create a path for the fish to follow back to your boat…

Getting those lures in the right position is crucial for marlin to be able to see them.

After 15 minutes on the fish he spat the hook! Maybe he was bill wrapped? Or maybe way just a lazy bite, who knows... We worked the area for an hour or so with no success. The further east we traveled the less fishy it became so we decided to head back in to where we hooked that fish.

We trolled the area as the light disappeared but with no joy we headed in towards Sydney harbour. The fishing seems slow at the moment but with a little patience, dedication and the right lures you'll come across the fish.
