First bonito and a cracker cooks session

G'day raiders!

First part is a bit of a delayed report for Easter (working nights is a killer)

Decided to head down to the hacking with my now very competent girlfriend and see if we could rustle up a feed for once!

Hit gymea baths with quite a few other people about, and after no luck on sending squid baits to the bottom saw a couple of young guys cleaning up on watsons leaping bonito on the other side of the jetty. We quickly made the move and started throwing lures out, the young blokes were more than happy for us to have a Crack as they'd almost filled a keeper net. Unfortunately the fish didn't feel like playing ball so we changed tactics and threw down unweighted pillie cubes and let them waft. The next half hour was a heap of fun!

The Mrs hooked up first, on the little 2 kilo rod! She played it like a pro and after a really good tussle up came her first pelagic! Tight structure and light line and she managed it so well! That smile says it all. And mine was even bigger!

Soon after it was my turn, landing two and losing one to a pulled hook on my 10lb outfit. My first bonito too so you can imagine how stoked I was! They're a heap of fun and so damn pretty.

Ended up taking two for a feed and they actually cooked up really well! Despite what I've heard to the contrary. Asian style with lime chilli and soy.

After a few weeks of night shift buggering my body clock up managed to get down to the Cooks this arvo for a quick session with the gf before work.

The river really felt alive tonight with heaps of action!

First cast I was onto a solid trev which put up a heap of fight as they do. Kept slugging it out deep with its side into the current. Heaps of fun on 6 lb and glad they're back for the winter! Hooked another two and one that felt huge but managed to chop my jighead off :(

Also managed this awesome bream coming in at 37 cm on the zman grubs! Biggest I've found in the cooks recently and called it for a trev by the fight!

Also had one of my most surprising experiences on the cooks to date. My girlfriend spotted a prawn in the water...I thought yeah ok someone's dropped their bait...until she scooped it up in the net and showed it to me live and wriggling!f403fa7d37630285c8b7444dcfa6096d.jpg

Never thought the cooks would be healthy enough to sustain them so glad to see the river improving.

She then chucked it on her jighead, sent it out...and reeled back in a bream. I'm a very very lucky man. Textbook fishing :)

Thanks for reading guys hope you don't mind the long posts. Hoping to get out again soon!

Cheers

Cheers for the report Witha! Great session there with the mrs mate.

Can't beat heading out for a fish, and then bonus for u your mrs loves it too.

Been wanting to try out the hacking area for a fish never been... Especially want to try catch some squid round those waters heard it's pretty good.

Nice catch with the trevally and bream. Also those bonitos look like they would of been awesome fun on light gear.

Well done again to u and the mrs!

Watch out the mrs may just start out catching u pretty soon I know mine does on occasions ;)

Cheers, GT

OK Ben, two questions,

What tide is best at Gymea? I'm thinking of fishing the low at midday today. for plan A. Plan B is good ol' Wally's.

What bank on the Cooks, north or south? I thinking perhaps I should have a plan C, a bit of LB tonight at the Cooks if there's no rain.

Well done on all fish caught. I've never caught a bonnie or a trev from memory. Just bream, flathead, whiting, and more recently, legal squire (yum!)

Your lure fishing has really developed. I think soon you'll be in the 10% of fishos who catch 90% of the fish. Maintain the rage, mate.

Are those Watsons White fleshed? I remember eating some as sashimi not so long back but can't remember if it was a frigate or a Watsons...

Thanks mate :) Yeah only bonus I can see on the night shift is an arvo fish haha gotta make the most of it!

You two are smashing it. Good stuff keep it up

Cheers mate :) she's coming along leaps and bounds

awesome work. are they watsons leaping bonito? i use to catch heaps of these in the harbour

To the best of my knowledge yes, did the Google search before choosing to keep them and that's the match.

Cheers for the report Witha! Great session there with the mrs mate.

We went at the end of run in to start of run out, seemed the run in towards the high was the best bet with most action mate!

Great report mate.

That's a great bream, and it looks so clean considering.

Congratulations to you both for your first Watsons'.

Living the dream.

Yeah i have a suspicion they move in from the bay. However surprisingly alot of my bream from the cooks come up silver and clean, water clarify isn't too bad it's what's in the mud that will getcha :)

Hopefully get stuck into the blackies soon mate

I'd sat they're fairly white, pink flesh with a blood line like Sambos. Not tuna red or even close mate

Two great sesions and it looks like the prawns are out and about...no wonder the fish are fat in the Cooks!

Haha the girth on it suggests you're right! Thanks mate

Terrific report and fishing with your partner in crime Witha. A couple of very nice looking bonnies and some other great fish to boot. Keep it up.

Cheers man :) always good to get results when she's around keeps her interested!

Good work bud! Nice looking-looking bonnies. I've yet to get one- do they put up a good fight? Can't believe you caught a prawn in the Cooks too, must be all that cleaning up you've been doing down there. ;)

Haha thanks mate I try to do my little part.

They fought really well on the light gear, my jew stick made it a bit less of a contest but on your combo they would be a heap of fun!

Also this was north bank, but the whole cycle way from illawarra to the rowing club has potential

Nice work Witha. :)

Do you ever fish up past Earlwood on the cooks? I have never ventured up that far but always wonder if it would be worth while.

Was a bit slow going at Tempe yesterday at lunch.

Cheers

Hey mate furthest I've really ventured is the illawarra rd bridge and a bit past near the golf course, looking to get further up as I reckon there's definitely potential for bream up that way, Tempe can be hit and miss for me too
