BigHorse
Hey everyone, I recently just won a Alvey 40GDZ reel and am wondering what to spool it with. I'll be targeting ludrick with floats and bream off the rock and the beach in summer. I've been recommended Maxima Ultra Mono Line, but for ludrick i think mono sinks, while some braid does? I'm ruling out using float line as its too one dimensional compared the braid and mono. Thanks in advance!
Isaac Ct
Whilst braid is sensitive and you can see more bites and feel more things, as soon as you get a fish and it touches a bit of structure it will pop. Mono on the other hand, stretches and is more abrasion resistant. But the choice is really up to you. Braid tends to be more expensive though.
Rebel
Alvey's only use Mono. Ask the experts there are plenty of Blackfish people on the Forum. On that Alvey I would be using Schneider Mono 9lb especially off the rocks. 2
Green Hornet
Best to stick with mono on an Alvey, especially around the rocks. You can use braid, though you risk some nasty cuts on your index finger as you lay the line onto the reel when retrieving. Some do use braid on larger Alveys, but find it necessary to wear a glove. @Rebel's recommendation of 9lb Schneider is a good choice and if you rub a little vaseline on the line, it will float. All of us older luderick fishermen used to do this for years before specialised floating lines came onto the market. Just work some vaseline into a piece of soft cloth and keep it in a small jar to make it easy to apply without creating a sticky mess. You can just wrap it around the line every hour or so while retrieving to reapply. Another good reason to choose mono is that when bait fishing the beach, braid can tangle horribly in any sort of swell due to it being being so limp.
