Fishing podcasts and info videos - link your favs

It's no secret, but I'm an avid listener of the Doc Lures podcast. I'm actually thinking of upgrading to a paid membership.

I like the fact that it covers a lot of Sydney fishing, as well as types of fishing I'd rarely do, but am curious about (e.g. Bonefish, Cod, Barra off beaches etc).

In any media I consume on any topic, I'm looking to be educated and entertained (often one and the same thing in my books). Anything novel or interesting is devoured by me! :D

I don't know how to link things Donna but I can give you sufficient info (I think) for you to access some of my favs.

Apart from our own shroom and KMS, I watch robbiefishing and The Ginger Fisherman both on Youtube.

I also love     my lure box  because it is very similar to what dirvin21 does in his MNC rivers (GT's, Mangrove Jacks, etc).

Hope this is helpful Donna, bn

YouTube:

Shroom  , sticky fishy fishing,  the hook and the cook ( also Scotty’s fishing life as both are by Scott lyons ), Roger Osborne , Alex Bellissimo, crebo’s fishing, Dave Sheldon fishing, flick with mick , sand flat fishing Australia, tackle tactics tv , and chris bamman( does a bit of fishing and camping )

podcast and radio :

Hi tide , Australian lure fishing ( doc lures ) , the big fish .

There were others but I got sick of listening to them whining on about the environment and not prepared to do anything about it themselves  or their show turned into one long plug for their sponsors - one in particular was so bad that I’m now sure he was getting a bonus if he could fit the sponsors name into every sentence he spoke :074:

The only Utube fishing related vids I watch is " Totally awsome fishing show " from England, doesn't catch good fish but I enjoy his personality, Mainly about river fishing for Carp etc which I am not interested in but just like his show.

Strange !! he's an old fisho like me and comes up with all sorts of weird gadgets used for catching fish.

Hi

I really enjoy watch Gido's fishing adventures:

This links to his homepage where you can access them. He catches some great fish, his videos feature spectacular scenery using good photography skills and he has an adventurous spirit!

Salt- Sticky Fishy Fishing, Roger Osbourne, Sammy Hitzke - all keep things simple which suits a saltwater novice like me.

Fresh- Social Fishing ... podcast is good as lots of top anglers are interviewed who talk about fishing lots of different places so some good ideas for road trips. Also Robbiefishing ... down to earth bloke who loves being in the bush. Very handy with a light spin outfit in overgrown skinny creeks.

Other- MylureBox not for the lure porn but I like the skip casting vids. Like to get better at that. Gido is cool too. Love the idea of combining my passion for climbing and fishing.

Non Fishing Specific- Scotty's Gone Walkabout- lots of effort put into filming. Visits places I've spent time in. Cool watching someone else's fishing journey from novice to competent.

Yep, he's really good at the skip casting isn't he...gets him loads of fish which (otherwise) would be missed by most anglers. bn

Hi raiders I am interested in what video/podcasts you watch?

There is much content out there. What ones do you watch regularly?

What do you look for in good quality podcast or video?

Link me some channels or people that broadcast fishing content.

So what do I look for in the angling related videos that I watch?

Firstly they need to be relative to my fields of interest. I NEVER watch videos about big game fishing because it doesn't interest me nor is it something which I am capable of doing. So there has to be some sort of attachment there for me.

The videos that I like show a level of respect for the viewer, they don't talk down to you. They make you feel as if you are there with the presenter, enjoying what they are experiencing. The presenter (ideally) should have personality, know their stuff and be willing to share it with the audience. I recall many years ago watching Rex Hunt and soon formed the opinion that he offered no useful information to the viewer.

A good video should have action, information and interesting content. Creativity is also a big plus for me. Take our own KMS. His videos are short yet interesting. He uses drone footage to "overview" the location. The videos are filled with interesting information, including locations. Something that the better presenters share with their audience.

The Ginger Fisherman shows underwater footage of what the fish are doing. Much can be learned by actually seeing how species stalk and attack their prey.

Shroom and Robbie Alexander (robbiefishing) both have oodles of personality and above all are persistent anglers. They spend heaps of time doing their presentations to a very high degree. They have engaging personalities and it's easy for the viewer to feel like their friend as we watch them do their stuff. Of course, we all know that presenters need acknowledgement themselves. We all have egos and it's perfectly normal to seek reinforcement of our capabilities from others. Good presenters don't go over the top with this aspect of their work. Shroom is a perfectionist while Robbie bungles his way through his presentations. They are just being themselves and we can see that they are GENUINE.

That is a good rundown of how you see it @big Neil and thanks for asking :)

I agree with you on the personality of the presenter. Presenting is something innate and hard to learn. Shroom has the personality in spades and actually makes you feel like you are in that boat or fishing environment with him. He also does not align himself with particular tackle, lures etc and even promotes bargain bin stuff.

It isn't about just presenting information. In my professional life I spent a lot of time at conferences here and overseas. I also was part of a small team that produced a very large nursing conference annually. When reviewing the call for papers submissions we were mindful of content, relevance and originality. We also chose presenters that we considered "engaging" and we gave a special award for the best presenter on the day. We had a check list that we used to score it.

I apply this to what I watch in the fishing world. Many, many of the presenters in the early days were all about their sponsor. When I saw the first slide with "sponsored by blah blah" I was immediately disappointed. We saw so many great young raider fishermen being lured (pardon the pun) by being sponsored. For most it took them nowhere and some gave up fishing all together because they could not enjoy their fishing trips without having to concentrate on mentioning sponsor names all the way through it.

It was even disappointing to watch the very popular fishos on TV shows who became focused on brands. Confidence in what they told us about products was at a low level because you knew they were only saying it because they were getting paid to do so.

In the present day we have every fisho with access to smartphone cameras and video equipment. There are so many on the channels in Instagram, Facebook, TikTok etc. Some attempt to be engaging but fail. Some are very young and would only appeal to a younger audience. The experienced and older angler already has mastery in these topics and may not feel it relevant.

It is a real skill to be able to present a piece that is interesting, filled with relevant and interesting content, novel ideas and good visuals. Docs Lures is a fabulous interviewer and really knows how to draw out his interviewee to give us an intimate understanding of a particular species or fishing skill.

Finally the fishraider community is full of characters.  A simple recitation of facts usually has a story within the story and we laugh, marvel and commiserate with the poster. Members like waza give us stories and pics of "the olden days". The famous Scratchie and his whole family keep us well provided with great content. Too many members to mention that give us reports and posts day in and day out. There is a place for all forms of content provision.

I will check out some of your suggestions and thanks for your input on this thread.

I have turned off most of the fishing shows on TV , they are one long advertisement with the odd fish thrown in these days, only ones I can stomach these days are the fishing show , fishing Australia ,Al McLashan( his underwater footage is excellent and do you know of any other mad bastard that would jump in and swim in shark infested waters ), step outside and fishing addiction - although the last two are borderline on my limit for advertising but they at least show you the rigs and do a bit of cooking to break things up

I want to watch a fishing show to either learn something or because it is about a spot I haven’t been to and want to go to - not listen to a couple of clowns dressed like an advertising billboard taking the P out of each other.

Shroom has a pretty happy go lucky personality and you can see from his videos just how insanely addicted to fishing he is - numero uno fishing channel 😀🎣🎣🎣🎣
