Elysian Posted April 13, 2022 Posted April 13, 2022 Hi Brain Trust, Its been a while since I've been fishing, so now looking at upgrading my rock fishing outfit. My previous rod (12ft Penn Prevail, is no longer fit for purpose... I broke the rod during storage..) Also now moving into more lure fishing as oppose to more of bait fishing that I was doing previously. I've been looking at some 3 piece rods, mainly for easy transport and storage. If anyone has or know of these rods or other recommendations for rods I would appreciate it. I'll mostly be throwing top ware lures or poppers between 40-65grams. I'll be looking to get another 12 or 13ft rod for bait fishing. SHIMANO 2021 COLTSNIPER BB S100H-3 (Lure max 85g, Line PE4) Major Craft New Crostage CRX-1103 Salmon (lure 14-70g, Line 10-30lb) Palms RKSS-116H+ (Lure 20-70g, Line 12-35lb) I'll be off the rocks mostly in the south coast, probably from Wollongong down to Kiama if that makes any difference I'm finding that its really hard finding 3 piece rods, most seems to be 2 piece rods. Any advice would be much appreciated, and Thanks in Advance
noelm Posted April 13, 2022 Posted April 13, 2022 You won't find many 3 piece (if any) in that sort of rod, don't know any of those models. Best go to a decent tackle store, tell them what you want, and see what they suggest.
xerotao Posted April 13, 2022 Posted April 13, 2022 My pick of the bunch would be the coltsniper. But would look at the m or mh as the h model is rated 65lbs. a stiffer tip would be mote suited to popper

I have looked at a few local stores but they are all 2 pieces or are in longer lengths 😞 58 minutes ago, xerotao said: My pick of the bunch would be the coltsniper. Just worried if i use a heavier than rated lure if it would adversely affect or damage the rod? The lure rating for the mh is 60g and line rating is pe3. My current lures are 40-65g ( guess I could just go buy some new lures 😁)
Central Coast Fisherman Posted April 13, 2022 Posted April 13, 2022 I have the coltsniper 962 mh pe3. I throw metals and hard body lures between 40 and 65g no worries. I find the ideal lure weight seems to be 55g. I use it for bonnies, tailor, salmon and have caught plenty of kings up to 70cm with this rod. It’s a great rod although if you are chasing bigger kings it doesn’t have the strength to turn them. The heavy pe4 coltsniper would be a better choice. What reel will you be using with the rod and what’s your budget?
Elysian Posted April 13, 2022 Author Posted April 13, 2022 Thanks mate. That helps heaps. Looks like the mh might be the way to go then. Since I’m not that lucky when it comes to kings. I find all the rats…. Budget is 300-400 for the rod. I’ll most likely pair with a 4000 Sustain FE (old reel i have and still going strong) or a Salina3 10000 if i need more line (though will be unlikely and will likely unbalance the rod )
Rob81 Posted April 14, 2022 Posted April 14, 2022 The 4k sustain sounds a bit light, I don't know too much about the okuma, but briefly looking at the specs for it, it looks like it might be a bit heavy for it. An unbalanced setup feels really odd trying to use it. You should give it a test in store before making any purchases.
Rebel Posted April 14, 2022 Posted April 14, 2022 Welcome aboard. There is a new 3pce rod 12ft. from Abu Garcia 4.0 Veritas. I have one. Use it for beach fishing. Haven't tried it on the rocks yet. Really strong rod. I use a Penn Prevail 2 10ft on the rocks. Great rod. Cheers.

I can’t find the shimano coltsniper or the majorcraft rods in any stores unfortunately . The Coltsniper i have found are all 2 piece. Or the Coltsniper XR 3 piece which is twice the price.
Rebel Posted April 14, 2022 Posted April 14, 2022 There a plenty of Coltsniper rods for sale online. If you are after another good rod have a look at the Dawia over there rod. Cheers.

There is a store in Croydon (I believe I cannot mention their name), they might have stock, but its best to call up. Their website is currently showing no stock for the 3pce Coltsniper BB, however the website is only based on the Croydon store stocklist and they have 2 stores (one in Eastwood), where they might have stock. Website does show that one of the 3pce Coltsniper XR models is available, however it is almost double the price of a BB model.
Elysian Posted April 22, 2022 Author Posted April 22, 2022 I ended up getting one online. I did go to the store and they didn’t have the BB in 3 piece. Only the XR and I didn’t want to pay twice the price ( the rod felt good though). There wasn’t much difference between the 2 piece XR and BB. So I’m assuming the same with the 3 piece versions. Hopefully will receive the rod soon and have some good weather to try it out.
Rebel Posted April 22, 2022 Posted April 22, 2022 I can't believe the price of the XR. I will stick to my Penn Prevail 2.
