Long cast reels

Hey Raiders,

 

Just curious to know what makes a long cast reel. 

As in, what differences are there to a normal reel which allow it to cast further?

A longer/taller spool lets the line spool out easier to cast further

I have an Fin-Nor LT 100 & 80.

I wouldnt call them long cast reels. Long cast reels spool are something like a shimano ultegra xtc or penn rival longcast. Big difference in spool size

Long enough for me & cast very well.

The taller spool design and how it lays the line on that spool. I have 2 Ultegra 5500 for surf fishing. They are good !

A few main features for long cast/Surf type reels:

- Longer spool

- Shallower Spool

- Closer nit line lay (less crosses when laid)

- Angled spool lip (most reels have this feature anyways)

Most of it is in the spool design. Only the line lay is via the body through the worm shaft cut.

Edit: Also, I believe the angle of the reel foot (how it sits on rod), makes that little bit more of a difference.
