big Neil Posted January 3, 2023 Share Posted January 3, 2023 So I had the opportunity to do something for the first time, something I never thought I would get the chance to do. In all honesty this experience has never presented itself for consideration until last week. I went sailing. DerekD's father (Derk) is a very spritely gentlemen. fitter than most people half his age and suntanned. I will say "distinguished". He has a 42 ft yacht which he is more than capable of using solo. He invited me to go sailing with Derek and himself. It was BRILLIANT! Derek and I arrived at the marina up near Palm Beach to find still conditions. Undaunted we went out to spot some seals, alas under power. When we returned to the mooring the wind started to improve so we set off under sail. I was amazed at how fast the yacht went with the sails up. We scooted through the waves at about 8 knots. The skipper and Derek worked the sails to maximise the available wind as we skirted round Lion Island. I was well qualified to act as ballast. The yacht and Derek ready to board. Lazing around... Maybe it is the Dutch background and maybe it is just our family but one way or another we've grown up around, on or in the water. I have fond memories of sailing with my grandfather on the Dutch canals on his sailing boat Freya. Glad to be able to share this experience with you.
