Yowie
Was heading outside yesterday arvo into Bate Bay with my mate in his boat. His neighbour was cruising out there in the morning, said the swell was bigger than the forecast, a bit bouncy, so he trolled up a bag of bonnies instead. My mate decided to fish up river instead, so we anchored up from Lilli Pilli and fished till dark. 2 Reddies each, up to 35cm so not biggies, but enough for us and the wives. Plenty just under. Mate pulled out a tailor about 40cm, and I pulled up a salmon about the same, released. Plenty of tailor but the rest were unders. A change from the bouncy waves. Happy easter to all.

Larkin
Couple of pinkies each - good catch! 👍 Today was the opposite - quite smooth outside & a lower swell than was forecast.

Reddie fillets tomorrow night. Could not go today, would have liked to be there, however, had a skin cancer cut out of a leg, and advised no stressing the wound for a week or more - bouncing in the ocean not advisable, also no swimming at the beach either.

It’s so common these days, especially if you’re a sun lover or out on the water like a lot of us here. Always good to get a skin check up - as you would have seen, those skin specialist clinics are full of people. Enjoy the fillets & Happy Easter! 3
Pickles
Nice to spend a day with mates on the water Dave and a feed to boot. Look after your leg, had the same a while back and ulcerated - not fun.

Now approaching the 2 dozen mark for skin cancers cut out, including 2 melanomas, so just another day in the doctor's surgery. 😁

jenno64
At least you got a Good Friday feed Yowie! Winds are up for a couple of days so it will be tough going on the water over Easter. What bait and rig do you use for the reds in the deep🤷🏻♂️if you don’t mind sharing🙏🏻

I use 2 ganged hooks, usually 3/0 longshanks, Mustad 4540 and a half. The bronzed long shank hooks are easier to gang than the stainless hooks, which are much harder. Thread on a fillet of fish or squid or half a smaller pillie, no sinker, and throw out from the boat. Handline or rod with the bail arm open to allow the fish to run. The ganged hooks hold the bait better than a single hook, so with a better bait presentation, and stop some of the tailor bite offs (though the bigger tailor will easily swallow both hooks) The downside is a smaller fish swallowing both hooks and not releasing too well. With those baits and rigs, I pull up reddies, tailor, kingies, salmon, bream, flatties, flounder, and whatever else is hungry.
