noelm
See them all the time in Mud Crabs, especially further south, I contacted fisheries, who told me to contact QLD because of more Crabs up there, they more or less didn't want to know about it, because I was from NSW, but, ended up doing a lot of research myself and found they are harmless to humans, especially since you remove them anyway. edit.......just looked closer at the picture, it is a Muddie....so quite common. Yowie
Maybe a Sacculina barnacle, a parasitic type.

noelm
Just to add, Crabs from around me down to Lake Conjola (that I know off) have this "disease" some have even had gills near eaten away completely, never ever seen it in Crabs from QLD, and I have caught hundreds up that way over the years. XD351
Cirripedia, Poecilasmatidae Apparently it is a barnacle, Couldn’t find anything about it affecting humans . Also found this - it shows many different types of parasites and the like that affect crabs . https://www.digsfish.com/Host-ParasiteAppendix.pdf Edited April 30, 2023 by XD351
