There is a report on the ABC today that Gill net fishing will be banned by the Federal Government. by 2007.

This will apply on the East Coast, but mainly in QLD.

The Fed's strike again.

Cheers.

Just reading all that appears to me to be driven by an entirely "green" movement with no real substance, even the description of the net shows complete ignorance. Don't know anything about Hammerheads being protected up there, I couldn't find much in the way of documented evidence, not saying it's not the case though.

Did some research, it appears one species of Hammerhead is "under threat" the Scalloped Hammerhead, all the other species are OK (so far) the bit about fish and chip shops using Shark is probably completely wrong, unless you live in Victoria, Shark is not common in most other states in chip shops, it's too expensive for a start, and there's a dozen imported fish that are a 1/4 the price to use (don't get me started on the fish importation thing......) Commercial fishing is pretty well regulated in most areas, some need looking into and adjusting, but in the main, it's not what we recs portray it to be. None of us own the fish, it's up to us all the look after what we have.

W.A. sells shark in the fish-n-chip shop deals, even naming what species is for sale. Cheaper though than most species. 5 years ago, dhufish fillets were $80 a kilo, probably dearer now.

For sure some fish are expensive, but those species are not what you get in your local chip shop, they nearly all use Hoki, Basa or some other imported species cleverly renamed to match some desired Australian species. There is a brand of Hoki (or similar)  sold here in supermarkets as Whiting, when in fact it has nothing to do with the Whiting we know, it's a South African fish, renamed to suit our market. Even the old Green Eye Shark that was once common in chip shops is too expensive now compared to the toxic waste we import for our consumption.

Yep-as ive said many times before-The Greens keep chipping away at the mainstream and wont stop-they dont care that people are out of jobs, they dont care that sustainable use of our resources is more environmentally friendly that importing stuff from China, they want power and are simply a rehash of Leninism at its finest. Our commercial fishing in general is some of the most well regulated in the world(in general) , and managemnet should be continued in that vein-but woke politics has leaked into science . Had a very interesting chat with a Qld Fisheries officer a few weeks ago -Degree qualified, passionate fisho, been in the game for 30 years, his current boss is a young Phd woke green, never fished, anti fishing, cant tell the difference between a bream and a blackfish (his words-not mine), got into fisheries to save Nemo. If we are not careful our future is very bleak.

This is exactly my point, just banning something never ends well, it might seem idyllic to some rec fishermen, until some green/no take zone intrudes in their area, then it's a travesty! We all have a stake in this, pros, recs, charter operators, mum and dad tourist fishers, picnickers, the whole lot is inter connected in some way.

Just for a change. Victoria who really promotes fishing in their State are giving away $60,000.00 for fishing rods to kids to get involved with fishing.

You have to wonder.

Cheers.

The price we pay for living in a democracy, everybody has the right to be heard. As mentioned in the thread, we are one of the most controlled fisheries in the world. Fortunately, most of us understand why things happen and the consequences of them not happening. Each of us should vow to play our part and speak loudly against those who wish to forfeit our right to go fishing, for they are narrow-minded and ill-informed.
