Sun safety

Well I took the kayak out yesterday to hit up the flats at gunnamatta. Left my ‘sunscreen’ at home which is basically a very thin jacket. ‘I’ll be fine, it’s cloudy’.

Well fast forward 24hrs and me arms are tender as all hell and had a case of ‘sun poisoning’ this morning which included chucking my guts out and dizzyness

sun protection lads, use it. If you forget it get it. Dosnt help when your skin is the same colour as the message box I’m writing this in ether.

and no, I didn’t catch anything worthwhile which makes this even worse.

I don’t use sunscreen as it makes me rash up so long clothing it is.

probably more important is a set of good Sunnys which I always have nearby

Thanks for your post. It highlights the importance of protecting skin and eyes when outside.

Sorry you suffered heat exhaustion. Take plenty of water to drink often.

Sunscreen is essential. You need to find one that you are not allergic to. See a specialist to get your skin checked regularly.
Hats and protective clothing must be used. There are buffs and hand protection gloves that are effective also.
Sunglasses are another item needed whenever outside too.
We have a member who is an optometrist who wrote this post on the right sunglasses to protect your eyes.

Swordie is about to have areas treated on his nose by his specialist dermatologist in just a few hours.
His love of fishing has resulted in many, many treatments and excisions. He goes every 3 months and has treatments.
Please have your skin checked.

It doesn’t take long to cop a burn ! I was outside yesterday in the sun for maybe 45min and copped some sunburn on my neck . I wasn’t in the sun the whole time and couldn’t even feel myself getting burnt.
For fishing I use track pants and a collared long sleeved work shirt and I’m wearing both of these from home so I can’t leave them behind . I have sunscreen and sunglasses stashed everywhere , in the boat , car and every tackle bag / box I own so it is impossible to leave them at home ! The sunglasses I use as backups are just the cheap tinted safety glasses I wear at work ( I buy a box of them )- sure they’re not the  good polarised ones I usually wear but they still protect my eyes from UV rays . I also have spare hats hidden in the boat and car - the wide brim type from a safety shop - iirc they cost $10-$15 each . One area a lot of fishos neglect to protect is their feet , I have lost count of the amount of times I have seen someone wearing all the good sun gear ( including a buff or solar tube and gloves ) but are barefooted! My feet and between my toes is the first place my skin doctor checks when I do my annual skin cancer check so for me it’s socks and crocs in the boat .

Kayaks are a very vulnerable area for sun exposure, no shade and sun being reflected off the water at a very high rate. I usually cover up from head to toe including fingerless gloves. Hope you get better soon

recovery's kicking along alright besides me left shoulder which is still... yeah I'm going to amputate it. got a single blister about the size of a 5c coin on my shoulder surrounded by a bunch of much smaller ones. looks like Uluru if id be honest & the temptation to poke it is killing me more than the sunburn itself.

My first serious sunburn, i think. I know i had one as a kid on my lower back digging a giant hole as a kid at kurnell and my shirt wasnt covering that section and i got a itch so unbearable its comparable to any medevial torture.
My aunt was telling a story when she was up at yamba as a kid she got a sunburn so bad on her back, her whole back was one blister.
