Doubling it didnt work but the 5 turn surgeons was great! Casts really well and was very strong. Now i just need to practise a bit so it doesnt take 10 minutes to tie... not too complicated though. Thanks Hodgey + Gremlin

yeh everything seems to love them- wish a jewie would eat one of mine hahaha

  6. I don't know too much about braid, but the stiffer fused braids like Fireline should result in less wind knots (I think). But in the higher breaking strains (15lb+) the stiffness will probably become a bit annoying. This is just what i seem to have picked up hope it helps
  7. Exams over- fishin this weekend for the first time in 3 weeks

  8. I checked out the STX the other day at my local tackle store, the 60 seemed about the right size and pretty light. Now i just need to save up for a while I would probably get the Baitrunner, but because i'll be using plastics just as much as bait it's not really worth the extra price and weight I dont think.
  9. OK thanks Slinky that clears it up for me. You and woodch0p know so much hahaha
  10. Thanks again woodch0p it sounds like a great reel. Wish i had some more money at the moment haha
  11. Thanks Stippy and Fezza, i think I'm leaning towards the 60 at the moment but not too sure... Can anyone help out about the bearings please? Thanks
  12. Hey everyone I need a new reel, and was almost definitely going to get the Daiwa Exceler DA 4000, but recently I noticed the Soron STX and thought it looked pretty good. It's a bit more expensive but i save money on backing anyway because of the 'SuperLine spool'. I will be matching it to a Pioneer 8-10kg and probably put 15lb and 30 lb braid on the spools (as Slinky suggested in my other topic) and use it for both bait and lures for kings and jewies. But I'm not too sure which size to go- the 40 or the 60. The 40 is 308g and the 60 is 434g, and the Daiwa is 385g Also, the max drag is only 7kg on the 40, but 10kg on the 60. I know many members are fans of these reels, so if someone could help me out a bit that would be awesome. Thanks Edit: Are the 11 bearings as good as 11 bearings sounds? And I will mainly be using it landbased.

    New Reel

Thanks for having a shot at my question Slinky! Braid on both spools... hmmm... hadnt considered that actually. A bit more expensive but will probably be worth it. It will take a while to get there,(still havent paid off the Trion lol) but that versatility should be great. I thought I would have to get a 300m metre spool of braid, but now that I have some confidence in my 'Improved Albright' that probably won't be necessary I suppose. The big one is always on my mind lol. So i guess it won't be any more expensive... just have to spend more on backing. I'll figure it all out one day. Thanks, AGAIN, for some great help Slinky. Without you, 'tackle talk' would be useless. LOL FB

    New Reel

Would 20lb braid and 30lb mono be more suitable?

    New Reel

Hey everyone. sigh... I have given up trying to make up my own mind. I need a new reel for jewfish, and would like to use it for smallish kings around the harbour as well. Budget is about $160-$190, as i want something that will last me a while without falling apart. I have pretty much settled on the Daiwa Exceler DA 4000 for $175 (i think its DA), but now i need to decide the line to put on it. (Wont have enough money for a while, so definitely still open for suggestions) It looks like it comes with a spare spool, so i thought i would put mono on one spool for bait, and braid on the other for lures. (Plastics for jew, plastics and poppers for kings) After reading through countless related posts, it seems that 15lb braid should be enough, but is that too light for a 4000 reel? The rod I will be putting it on is an 8-10kg Pioneer Perfect Cast (would probably prefer a Catana- the extra length would be nice- but at the moment this is the best i can do)I was thinking 20 or 25 lb mono, which would probably be too heavy for a smaller reel? 20lb braid would be much better suited to the 4000 reel, so is there much difference between 15 and 20lb? (casting distance, lure action etc.) As far as brands, I like the Schneider mono, and was looking at PowerPro braid. As I said, i have given up trying to figure it all out for myself, so any help would be awesome. Thanks
