  1. that depends on how and where you're fishing. you can go up to 25 or 30lb on the leader with 15lb braid as the braid will handle that weight. I often fish with floating strip bait and find the hook up rate is greater with the lighter line. If you're fishing structure or downrigging with whole baits I'd be using at least 30lb and probably a different outfit altogether. 15lb braid for kings will get you burned on a good one anyway...but that's half the fun.
  2. Here are a couple of 65cm kings we caught last saturday. a perfect morning on the water and pittwater had little traffic too. took an hour to land a squid and then we stripped him up and 20 min later we're on to a double hook up with both of us yelling at each other to get the net. after several minutes of mayhem both fish are safely landed and it was my mates first king.
  3. I have the exact same setup...symetre 4000, 15lb tufline on a shimano snapper raider 5-8kg rod. I generally run 15lb flourocarbon (seaguar) for pelagics unless there's good reason to go heavier. just landed my first 3 kingies on it last week. goes like a dream.
  4. I was down at cg two monday's ago and managed 2 kings...both about 57cm (released of course). heaps of figates and bonito around and even a couple of spotted mackerell. fresh squid and light line seems to be the key for the kingies. good luck.
  5. 15lb for cg is about right in my opinion. good to use a rod at least 7ft in lenth and rated around the 15lb mark as well. i've caught them on lighter but you'll loose at least half as many as you hook. there may be days where they hit on 30lb at the wharf but that seems to be rare. good luck.
  6. Nice work and good to hear the big ones are back in the lake. A lot of people are mistaken about the quality of fish from narrabeen lake!
  7. great stuff adam...now if you can only hook a good one on the TLD and justify its existance
  8. nice work pete. much appreciated.

    New Sp Outfit

I have the symetre 2500 matched to a Pflueger soft plastic 2-5kg, 7ft one piece. I like these better than the bream raiders (though they are a great rod). The pfleugers are usually more expensive...rrp is $199 but I've found them for 100-125 so if you look around you should get a deal. Definetly go the symetre if you can afford it. The Sienna/Catana combo is entry level (don't pay more than $100 for it!) but the symetre/bream raider or pfleuger is leaps ahead. good luck. Kit
  10. I'll be going on Friday morning. Yesterday they posted a slow one, but that's fishing. Good luck.
  11. that's gotta feel good! well done. and welcome to site, and no...post length wasn't too long...we all like a good story.
  12. "Today was a day where I simply gained more valuable experience!! Oh well, I coulda been workin...." That's the way to look at it! Every trip is opportunity to learn regardless of your "success". Hope you get onto them soon.
  13. 4lb will catch a flatties. you just have to be patient and keep their heads under the water. I use 6lb pioneer for flatties and bream, but if targeting bream I'd use 4lb if there's no structure around. I'm sure he meant have the drag fairly loose as you said. good luck...hope you get one soon.
  14. I would have loved to stay longer....Very nice work on the kingy. I guess I own at least half of that fish since it was my 10lb fluoro that saved you.
  15. I'm with Hirimasa. Fresh kingfish, thinly sliced, soy & wasabi. Perfect.
  16. nice work...and good to have you back.
  17. nicely done....tough work with the squid. 3 hours!
  18. enjoy your day....doesn't get better that. well done.
  19. good to me you too Tom. pity the action slowed, and that you lost one...the odds are in their favour off the wharf! might see you sunday amidst the mayhem.
  20. Nice to meet you and thanks for the net work.
  21. Well I finally got one...make that two. My goal for the summer was my first kingy. I've caught one previously but only on a charter. With a bit of advice from Kingsrule I headed down at first light and after 45min caught a small cuttlefish. Over to the end of the jetty and within 20 minutes...bump...bump....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. oh yeah. a good fight and SNAP the kingy found its freedom. the remains of my 15lb fluro leader was all frayed up. heart pumping. it was good to hook one so I was pretty stoked with that. 15min later.....exact repeat but this one took extra line and burnt me again. 15min later.....I'm on again...so is one of the locals (goes 70cm) and so is Kingsrule. TRIPPLE HOOK UP off the end of the wharf! Both their fish are netted and this time I tighten the drag a bit more and a fellow raider nets my first king. 30min later....on again...another good fight on my flick stick and the second kingy is in the esky. An awesome morning....I left at 8 so maybe it got even better. Kingsrule has some pics and maybe some more news? Here they are...
  22. I've also found my usual spots pretty slow in the past 2 weeks. Last night no one caught anything in the hour before dark. Very unusual. There have been some decent Jewfish caught recently though.
  23. Hey Ross, Thanks for collecting the orders from Tony! Very generous.
  24. In Sydney... 1) Kingfish 2) Flathead 3) Whiting Overseas and better than anything else I've ever eaten... 1) ALASKAN HALIBUT. Cooked on the beach in foil with butter and garlic and a splash of lemon. Even fantastic after being snap frozen and shipped back home. then... 2) Walleye 3) Alaskan (Canadian) Sashimi Salmon
  25. Some rods can be used for either application. You need one with several guides for the baitcaster and a larger first guide for the threadline reel. Baitcasters usually have larger and stronger drag systems. They allow free spooling and they also provide a direct pulling action against the fish. Those designed for casting are more accurate as you can thumb the reel to stop the cast. They are prone to backlash tangles. Threadlines are easier to cast but less accurate. You generally get less tangles. Much better for casting light jig heads and light hardbodies as baitcasters need the weight to get the spool moving. There's my 2 cents... Kit
