  1. Hit and Miss. I went up Friday total waste of time. I'm gonna stick to the harbour till it warms up
  2. check this stuff http://www.purefishing.com.au/berkleypro/berkley/berkley-nanofil-test-saturday-9th-july-2011/
  3. Anyone heading up for this event? This will be my first comp ever, just trying to convince a mate to come and bring his boat. Looks like a great way to spend the long weekend. http://www.gamakatsu.com.au/ncfb/index.html
  4. Mate its all about 'match the hatch'. You need to have an array of lures in all different sizes. Personally in sydney harbour I think the lure that covers most of the spectrum is the 10g raider. However having fished Sydney almost exclusively for pelagics I have noticed that the kings on the surface will be feeding on krill. I have had days where there are 1000 kings on the surface and not even had a touch with any of my lures. I had this problem two weeks ago with some salmon too. So I have invested in an 8# Fly Combo and it had paid off big time. With fly fishing you can cast the smallest bait imitations to the largest bait imitations. My catch rate has already significantly increased. So if you really want to outfish everybody have a look at the fly, because by limiting yourself to spinning you cant always match the hatch. And just on Summer is Coming. The big thing about Sydney and last summer was Bonito. In the peak of last summer Bonito were everywhere and once they dissapeared so too did the kings and the reliable surface action. Until Wednesday I hadn't seen or caught Bonito since April. On Wednesday I got a couple all up on the surface. Lets hope they hang around because for their size they are great fighters.
  5. What about spiderwire. I've always seen it but never given it a go.
  6. If anyone was to catch one it would be Craig. That guy gets into everything. Wouldn't bother with Lane Cove. I fish that place nearly once a week and never come upon them. I would think of places like Mooney Mooney Creek. Even Wyong River. Not sydney though
  7. I tried to get some from my local tackle shop for hairtail but no deal. i read on one of the forums that red glowsticks are alot more effective than fluro. Good luck and let us know how you go. be careful with the conditions though
  8. Should be plenty of tailor up on the surface in Lake Mac, its not too far
  9. I think Coffs Harbour is the most southern point that you get them consistently. But if you trawl the forums you will find info on Manly Lagoon. It once had Barramundi, Giant Herring and Mangrove Jacks. Doesn't anymore, but worth a read.
  10. Had something similar happen when I was out chasing hairtail. We started at Waratah bay, but ventured out to stingray bay and got a little lost as I haven't fished Cowan before. Iphone saved the day..
  11. It is only a matter of time until it becomes compulsary for everyone to be wearing a life jacket on the water. I don't have big problem with that. However the affectiveness of a self-inflating life jacket needs to be looked at especially when looking at drownings like the botany bay drowning last week
  12. Went out today looking for the schools of Striped Tuna I found on monday armed with the 8 weight. We had no luck on monday as we didn't have the fly and they weren't taking anything. Once again the BOM got it completely wrong. 'Light winds my arse' Went from Drummoyne to, Clifton, North Harbour, Manly, Roseville, everywhere and didnt see a single splash, had a crack for flatties but absolutely nothing. Was on our way home when we finally found some splashes at Barangaroo. I was driving so my mate jack had the fly first. Took a bit of chasing but eventually he hooked up after I had virtually thrown my tackle box at them on spin gear. Nice winter Salmon, about 4lb although we got a 6lb early in the week. It was my turn on the fly after but the school got news of us and headed down and didn't see a splash again.
  13. yeah we had the fly, but it was way too windy.
  14. yakkas are soo hard to come by recently
  15. They are striped tuna not mullet. I saw them, we also found a school of frigate macks, again feeding on micro baits. I think they are called glass minnows. I think a trick which I didnt use, is to put a bit of maccas straw on your line and a hook. The straw runs over the shank of the hook and causes a bubble trail. This sometimes works. I've seen it used by the Ifish crew on salmon in tassie and it worked well
  16. Thats a really nice size trevally, I wouldn't be complaining about that
  17. Amazing considering it costs nearly $1000 to go on a charter in Sydney
  18. Forgot to add, I saw heaps of Game Fishing boats just off sydney. Got me thinking that the Yellowfin might be close. I thought they might be looking at Whales initially, but the whale watching boats were elsewhere
  19. Yep, tried every lure. Not the rapala on specifically. We couldn't find any bait in the water either. Makes me think they were eating something small
  20. Went out today in pursuit of Salmon. Found some fish just before the Harbour Bridge, but you can't stop there so we motored on. Saw some splashes at Clifton Gardens and managed two nice salmon. But the plan was to head to manly to target the apparent big schools of salmon. As we motored out of the heads we saw thousands of birds, and under them were thousands of Striped Tuna. We tried for nearly two hours, with all different lures, techniques. We couldn't manage a single hit. We motored to manly same again school of tuna. Couldn't get a hit. Sooo frustrating.. One of the Salmon we got
  21. I was just out at manly and you could see the schools about 1km out. Hundreds of birds out there
