  1. Fished landabased off middle head today. Floated servos pilchards out under a float but the wind had a habit of blowing the floats back towards the rocks. Nothing seemed to take a liking to the bait except a lone southern calamari which fell victim to a pilchard on a squid spike after he made his presence known on my other rod with a ganged pillie. Was hoping his friends would be about as well, but they werent. Day ended with a couple of pike which barely even put up a fight before having to trek back to the bushes in the dark. Had contemplated cutting the squid into strips and have a shot at landing a jewie off some beach but couldnt handle the wind. So kept the squid for dinner.
  2. Looks like a Kelpie or Rock Cale...
  3. Definitely not a hairtail... its got a forked tail.
  4. Top catch there... whiting are great fun on light gear.
  5. Keep at it and you'll get one eventually... hopefully you wont have to wait for as long as I did... An airaitor pump would have kept more of the yakkas alive but its something that i yet to add to my arsenal.
  6. Off the beach Thanks jrzila aka Simon.
  7. Thats a awesome catch!! Great photos too... how long did it take to land??
  8. There's a Caltex(I think its caltex) on the corner of Old South Head Road and Blair street. Block of pillies is about $13 last time I was there.

    Rock Cale

I'm no marine biologist but I always thought that rock cale and kelpfish (kelpies) were the same fish.
  13. hahahahaha!! Dont forget the bulk freighter social at Nobby's
  14. The tailor should do. They'll go for any small immobile fish that they can find (expect maybe a puffer fish).
  15. Just got back from a jewie session myself. Threw out yakkas into the heavy surf at Stanwell for lump after lump of kelp. Ironically, it was kind of a good thing that there was so much kelp because they put up a pretty good fight in rough surf and kept me active enough to stop freezing my ball sinkers off. After about 10 lumps, I hooked up to the mother of all lumps that took off with hook, trace and sinker. Couldnt be bothered rigging up again so we called it a night...
  16. I'll say... if you actually made it back, there would be some brown in your trousers too!!
  17. LOL! My got jealous because I made her feel 2nd best to a jewfish and I didnt go fishing in the daytime like normal people??
  18. Sounds like a plan Zenman.
  19. Hey I've been thinking the same thing!! There's some big tides late next week because of the new moon as well.
  20. When are you guys planning on going? I'm up for a fish on saturday arvo... Got a new reel to christen.
  21. Looks like a flounder to me.
  22. Just cut off the wings and then remove the slime. Slime is removed by rubbing salt over the wings. There is cartilidge through the wings which is edible.
  23. Yeah they are edible and are very tasty. I dont bother with them though because they're a pain to clean. (really slimey)
