  1. Hello fellow raiders,

As the title suggests some of us won't be fishing until further notice due to these unfair lockdowns with "LGAs of high concern" being affected the most.

So being the last chance the wet a line I decided to throw some plastics around in Chipping Norton lake which is within my 5km zone in hope of a Jew or a flatty or two.

Ended up with 5 flatties ranging from 30-45cm..perfect eating size... If it wasn't chippo lakes, but non the less had a good time.

The fish were caught on Z Man 4 inch diesel minows and grubs , rigged on 3/8oz 4/0s

    Stay safe raiders

    Jeremy

Three days ago Stewy @swordfishermanhad a call that his father was in hospital and terminally ill.

After a very short stay in hospital his father succumbed to cancer and died. Pandemic restrictions only allowed one person to be with him in his last hours. Funeral is 10 persons only.

Hugs to Stewy and all the extended family at this sad time.

    Rest In Peace Bert

    Gday Raiders

I received a last minute invitation to join a few friends up to Port Stephens for the week. A few calls later and with leave approved at work it was on.

Of course, it would have been silly to visit this beautiful place without reaching out to local legend @Scratchie to say hello and to also invite him onboard for a fish.

Jeff and i had tried to get this meet together for a few years now but logistics proved difficult the last few times. It was all very last minute but luckily Jeff had an opening and we locked it in for Monday morning !

So we met at the ramp at 5am and were on our merry way. A quick sound around cabbage tree island for bait but none there so we moved on to maximise fishing the first light. Scratchie fished plastics whilst i stuck to baits with a pea sized sinker.

Scratchie did a fantastic job explaining and navigating the many marine parks around the islands all whilst imparting his wisdom about plastics fishing for snapper (at which i am yet yo learn). There was plenty of bait stacked on the sounder but the reds just werent there.

As we approached the edge of a reef Scratchie proceeded to tell me about the David and Goliath battle that has been unfolding over the last few years between him and whiskers... "this is where Whiskers lives Sam". A few casts later and Jeff had a huge strike followed by an immediate bust off.  Jeff was absolutely gutted, but did a great job holding in the dissappointment. To quote " you would have learnt a few new words Sam" 🤣

We proceeded to move around the island fishing the permitted zones when we came across some surface action. We wacked on two lures in the Christmas tree colors and did some trolling. On the first pass we managed a double hook up of two rat kings, second pass one more rat and then third pass had a huge strike on Jeff's Saragosa. The head shakes were violent followed by a huge run. Jeff played the fish like a champ and we both agreed it was a solid king. I soon noticed the boat was spinning in circles and it was just about this time Jeff had the fish in sight and said " its a Tuna!!, a yellowfin"

Both panic and excitement racheted up to the next level. Do you have a gaff ? Nope, shit how do we get it in the boat. Try getting its head in the net, didnt work.

In the end i just reached over grabbed the tail and lifted it into the boat. An unexpected but welcome catch ! High fives all round.

@Scratchie thanks for an awesome day on the water mate, good company, good fishing in one of the best places in Australia.

Ps @Berleyguts we both discussed it and agreed that any replies to this post are forbidden from including any mention of chores, housework etc etc 😅

    Thanks for reading fellas.

    G’day raiders,

Well this is a bit of a mixed report from different journeys to Broughton Island.
After the cancellation of the Port Stephens meet up, there was still a few raiders that managed to get up here over the last few weeks and we found a chance to hit the water.

Starting with @the skipper a couple of weeks ago and a few mates. We hit the water early and made our way up to the island. Got to our spot and found there were 5 boats in the area. (I hate fishing weekends) Anyway, we worked hard all day trying many locations but to no avail. The fish just weren’t there.

The next week I got out with a local mate and we stuck to the same plan. It was looking promising after the first drift my mate comes up tight to a good fish that was giving him a workout but unfortunately pulled the hook. With spirits high we pushed on and after a million casts we found a small patch and picked up 4 keepers but only to 55cm.

Then I teed up a trip with @Welster and his father. We were greeted to a beautiful morning. Tried a little while for livies but no much bait present. The same seemed to repeat itself at the island. So we begin to cast and cast and cast and cast. Many changes in location but the results were pretty much the same as the previous 6-8 weeks of fishing. Well we tried! But Welster did manage his first snapper on sps at 48cm. 💪

After receiving a text from @mrsswordfishermanthat her and Stewy were headed up for a few days, it was time to clear the calendar and make way for a catch-up! We had a lovely dinner, coffee, then a bbq breakfast and a plan was hatched to take @swordfisherman up to the island. His anticipation was high of getting a decent snapper but the realist in me was knowing it would be a struggle.
And unfortunately once again the struggle was real. But testament to the true fisherman we are, we “just kept casting” all day and I managed one embarrassing snapper at 35cm. But in all honestly it was just good to get out on the water with a good mate I haven’t seen or fished with in ages! We also ran into @quintrex52 who I’ve fished with plenty times and he was struggling too!
Thanks also to Donna for a wonderful dinner and weekend and it was so good to see you too! it’s been too long. 😘

So now to working out why the struggle?????

After talking with a few well respected local fishos,  we surmise that there are a few reasons for the lack of fish in the inshore reefs.
First is to do with water temperature. We never seen the low temps that we usually do over winter and in fact had a warm patch that would have induced early spawning and the big fellas move on. The lack of current, does not sustain the food chain so there is a depletion of quality bait. No bait no fish! Add all that to the clearest water I’ve ever seen with visibility up to 20-25m and there’s the most excuses I can find. Put simple, the fish ain’t there! 😢😢

So the boats in the garage until things improve or I feel like punishing myself next week! Lol 😝

But a big thanks to the many raiders that I’ve had the pleasure to meet and fish with. As I say, I never guarantee that we’ll catch fish but I’m always happy to show you my spots and techniques if that helps. And I swear there are some really good snapper up here, just not at the moment!!!
    Tight lines all,

    cheers scratchie!!!

And finally, a big shoutout to a mate that is recovering from life changing surgery @back cruncher. Get well soon champ! You must have taken all the fish with ya bastard! Hurry back so we can start putting up some decent reports!

It was a real struggle.. Not just with the snapper.. Couldn't find a squid, lost a good jew and pulled the hooks on biggest snapper of the trip. But that's fishing.. Always good to bump into a few raiders though @ Stew, Donna and Jeff

  5. Quick report on hairtail scene at the Cowan/Hawksbury system..I have been going out once a week with a good mate for the past three weeks chasing the elusive hairtail and managed a couple of hairtail per trip. They have all taking a liking to pilchards on gangs with a red glow stick, but this season the majority of hooks ups seem to happen a couple of hours before sunset and just into the night. Tried toughing it out through the cold a chilly AM hours for donuts🥶 WB has been absolutely dead compared to previous years and JB has been the go to.. Raiders what are your thoughts and experiences?

Hey guys we headed out to make the most of the great weather on Saturday and Sunday. On saturday our plan was to fish the high tide for an hour or so then head over to towra to see if there were any crabs about. Unfortunately there were no crabs but the kings were out to play only taking live squid. Ended the day with 1 hookup and one bust off catching 1 fat king at 78cm.

Sunday was pretty much the same, except we wanted to solely target kings for the high tide. We had difficulties catching the live squid only managing two, and we had 1 hookup and 1 bust off again!! We left with another kingfish this time going 77cm but much much fatter!

Nice fish guys.. They have been so fussy.. I was fishing there on Wednesday and had similar results. Marking alot of kings but they were almost all holding near the bottom. Downrigged for an hour without a touch on fresh squid, so decided to spot lock and fish straight up and down on 30lb gear ended catxhing 5 of them, suprising all legal fish bar one.  Also lost a good one but i think mr bullshark is lurking around

Decided to head to broughton this morning for a quick session before the southerly blew up.

Went to get get some livies hoping for slimies but struggled, not sure what's going on but didn't get any, I normally  have no trouble, ended out with some yakkas and 3 small bonnies all caught at the same time on the bait jig, they tested me. Also i caught my biggest bream  but threw him back as it's a only bait gathering allowed  where I went.

Went to broughton and picked my first drift, threw out a slab of Bonnie while i put a plastic on the other rod, before I got it out of the packet the slab bait got hammered, peeled a heap  of line off before it busted me off, the leader was chaffed up bad the whole length,  probably a king im thinking.

Got 1 snapper 35cm then changed spots.

Threw out a livey and started casting plastics, was just about to do another drift when bang the livey was off.

After my earlier bust off I was crossing my fingers it wouldnt happen again, after some big runs I was thinking kingy, then shark and then a 90cm snapper came up, quick net job and couldn't send @Scratchie a photo quick enough.

A few more drifts and lost 2 livies , both missed the hook, one was pretty decent looking as I came up and monstered  the livey on the surface and had a massive big swirl when it hit,.oh well.

Feeling pretty content tried for a few squid before the wind came up, got 5 green eyes.

The selfie photo is a bit blury unfortunately

    Good day out

    G’day raiders,

Well today was one of those special days.
I got a text from the very first fishraider I ever took out fishing 8 year’s ago @Spearer1
Since that initial fish we haven’t caught up but have messaged each other etc on various platforms.
Anyway, today we finally managed to get out after Adam messages me and said he was keen to get amongst some snapper. So today was a bit different as I worked early and we didn’t leave until midday. Conditions looked good but the curse of the full moon hung over our head.
Well, we well and truly put pave to that myth. Every area we fish we hit up on a good fish. Might not have landed them all, ay Adam (dropped 2 screamers rookie error) but we just kept finding them with some real decent ones amongst the lot.
It was just awesome to catch up with Adam again and we had as much fun today as we did the first time we met!
I’m sure we’ll be back out there to do it again soon! Thanks again champion!

    cheers scratchie!!!
