  1. Water temp 19.3 bit further out wide nice and blue
  2. We went out to 12 mile and had a jig. Was ok, managed a few rats and I got a good legal king, mate got busted off but was pretty hard work, few charter boats had better luck with yakkas but nothing over 80cm was pulled in. Couldn't raise much of a strike on the sambos at north head on the way back in, over it by that stage anyway and went home, wind wasn't the greatest today
  3. You heading out tomorrow mate ?
  4. I've got a mack bait that has seen better days, every now and then I need to give it a "tune" so it swims straight, but still pulls in bonnies most sessions! Love a good old lure, change the hooks and keep using it I say !
  5. Try better quality hooks as well. More expensive ones will be alot sharper and much easier to put bait onto. With the pillies take a spare container as fill it with salt, chuck them in the container and shake it around with the lid on. The salt will keep them firm and thaw them out as well, makes refreezing alot better too
  6. Depends on your budget. I could have bought 3 Salina reels for the price of 1 Saragossa so to me that's value for money. Now the price of the Salina reels have gone up, and the price of the Saragossa reels has come down I would probably go with shimamo. Mines a 10000 and handled legal kings over summer in shallow water really well. Yet to test it jigging but for the $160 i paid I'm really happy with it. If it breaks in the next few years I won't be concerned as my expectations weren't very high for it, and it's performing well so far. Also it's got a lifetime warranty so if it does break or stiffen up ill just send it back anyway...
  7. I find Mcglaasins YouTube shows the be really good, and I enjoy watching the iFish shows as well. Although PW does carry on alot on the show, he is just doing his job, if his job means he has to endorse a particular product then so be it. If you happen to know better than him the buy what you want. At the end of the day the diff between a white, black or grey boat motor is about the same as the type of car towning the boat attached to it. I do agree more explanation about rigs and setups, all though these are explained, but on an inconsistent basis. Advise from one of Mcglassins videos has helped my kingy fishing alot
  8. We hit them up yesterday before the wind kicked in and they are taking anything and everything, sometimes before we reset the drift I was flicking a stick bait soft plastic out hooking up straight away, other times I had a dead yakka and just see that out unweighted and hooked up, and pillies. Everything seemed to be working, and I found hooking one on a plastic got the bigger ones fired up and they would take the livies. Good that there is plenty of fish around and they are great fun on light gear too
  9. Have a look at all the reef markers up to 50m depth to start off with, there are plenty outside of the heads an will give you an idea of what kinds of conditions to learn in. I honestly agree with above, especially spend a season inside the harbour first learning how to handle your boat properly, plus there are still plenty of fish in the harbour. A suggestion would be find a mentor who maybe has a boat and take turns going out in each others boats so you get some good experience. I'm lucky enough to have a great mentor who has a number of seasons under his belt in offshore conditions, he has a 5.3m Quintrex and furthest we go us 12 mile, but the last 4 times we've been out, 2 of them we haven't even headed offshore because the conditions weren't suitable / safe enough. And the weather can change so quickly, we've been pretty lucky and avoiding storms but we study the weather patterns every day, and even then you can't predict the unexpected
  10. For flatties try to the right hand side of the boat ramp there's less snags and better for working plastics bouncing them off the bottom, under the bridge has lots of snags like you mentioned. I've caught good bream to the right of the little tree next to the bridge before you can see there's a small patch of water that is calmer when the current runs, burley up and drop peeled prawns down there and slow retrieve them in. Should get some fish for sure
  11. Travelling between watsons bay to Sow & Pigs I think one of my tackle boxes with all my squid jigs in it seems to have departed its spot on the boat. I know it's a long shot but if anyone finds it please let me know. It's one of those plastic trays with all the dividers, large size with about 8 jigs in it. We went back and looked for it but it should have been floating because it was clipped closed so not sure where it went Thanks guys
  12. They're the ones from squidgy, pre rigged and weighted, different tails and colours and sizes, excellent if your a gumby like me at rigging plastics too haha
  13. I worked out a 70cm king would normally cost around $70 from the markets, but $20 is ridiculous and apart from the technical fact that it'd be illegal to sell it to him anyway. King's taste great, Im hoping to get a decent one next time I head out as I've just bought a blow torch and Im keen to try it out on some thinly sliced segments. Also tastes great marinated in Sweet Chill & Ginger marinade and pan fried
  14. Good to see the warmer water is starting to move back in, the water was cobalt blue last weekend and great clarity, just freezing! Some small dollies on the fads but nothing of interest. There looks like plenty of warm water further off the coast, hopefully it moves in closer in the coming weeks. Good effort on the reds as well, do you find they don't tend to go off the bite during the full moon ?
  15. Nice snapper mate. What depth was the water 22.4 deg at ? Last weekend was terrible water was below 21 deg most of the time and got to 21.6 deg in about 110m of water then started going back down again so we turned around and came back in. MHL buoy is about 1km off its mark and not updating the temp online anymore
  16. Nah not that one, I've got the blue mack colour. My mates rapala can't troll as fast as mine can, about 7 knots usually is a good speed. Depends on conditions but they can troll prett quick
  17. It was blue with green under the belly with black stripes but its hardly got any paint left on it now, needed a retune last year after being hammered by a big tailor and breaking one of the treble hooks so it wasn't swimming straight, but once I fixed it up worked a treat. They don't make them anymore so get one sooner rather than later
  18. Definitely mate, I have a lively lures 4" Mack bait been using it the past 3 seasons and it has copped some serious damage, and kept me very well fed. I tried a new technique with the bonito last night, fillies at skinned and cut out the blood line, then blow torched like they do at sushi train (with teriyaki sauce and mayo ontop then torched) tasted amazing ! My mate swears by his Rapala he has, mack bait usually wins though I have heard of guys who chase marlin who troll large 3 hook flasher rigs for triple Hookups so next time we start hooking up properly to Bonnie's I'm going to give it a go. We get good results with Christmas tree skirts as well, never tried trolling a dead bait but got them at longy before free spooling an unweighted yakka a few times
  19. Nice guys, good to see the Bonnie's are finally here to play again, we got one yesterday and heaps of rats. Keep an eye out for packs of birds on the surface eating stuff, we picked up a super fresh large cuttle fish and used it for bait when whe stopped to see what one group was feeding on, we had no squid and it worked a treat!
  20. What model salina did you get? I got a 10000 and only just managed to fit 300yards of 50lb power pro on it with pretty much no backing. If you've got a 10000 series try fine the smallest diameter braid possible, 16000 has a bit more space but I would expect close to the same capacity. The guide provided by okuma is way off, I compared diameter of the actual braid against their guide and was off by about 100m
  21. I've got a few different types, fins 6lb on my 2500 sienna, very smooth and strong, it's orange. Suffix 15lb on my 4000 reel, again no dramas with it at all. Power pro 30lb on another reel on dark green. Sometimes knots break easier than with the other braids especially when tying to a leader directly, lost a few lures trolling so use a swivel now. Power pro super slick in 50lb on the salina, and probably the best braid of all of them, honestly I don't think I'll but anything else. Super strong, super smooth easy to tie knots, come off the spool really nicely when casting and on drag when you hook up to a fish
  22. Try changing to fluorocarbon instead of mono, I run 50LB and hookup without dramas to kings with it, when I use mono it's a diff story, they are super fussy
  23. We hit up the harbour on sat and had limited success like you guys. Had no problems getting lives, yakkas and even slimies as well as there were heaps schooling up. Spun up a rat king on a metal lure off the colours other than that all quiet, no luck with the squid either
