Awww nah my hubs are still good just was thinking for the price May as well get new ones but I'll just get the bearing pack.... Never new that about the oil? What's it do react with the grease

It contaminates the friction material on your brake pads.

Just seen the timken ones only 50 bucks for a set... Cheers thanks for pointing me in the right direction

No Dramas.Remember to clean the oil of the new hubs with brake clean before installation.

Hi guys just wondering... My boat trailer has hubs with the discs on them for the brakes, Im going to be changing the bearings and noticed the packs with the hubs and bearings are real cheap but they are the hubs without the discs are the hubs connected to the discs or are they removable? Cheers omally

Those hub/bearing packs your looking at are for unbraked trailers. You can get them for braked trailers to suit yours also. But be aware the bearings generally sold with them are low quality rubbish.I have seen some online with good quality Timken bearings which is what you want.

The hubs for unbraked and braked trailers are machined from a  block of solid steel and the hub is part of the discs(rotors). The only thing removable on hubs is bearings, races, seals and wheel studs. The Main hub is a solid chunk of metal.

A good option is buy the hubs online and fit quality Timken,SKF etc bearings after discarding the cheap bearings that came with the hubs.

  4. Biminis are designed for shade more than anything else.Parrafin wax is a good waterproofer also.

On another note, you don't see many boats with canopies fitted anymore do you?I find them superior to biminis in wet weather and think the frames from either get in the way as much  as each other when fishing.

Headed out yesterday afternoon at 4pm for a fish armed with some tube worms and pilchards.. The strong wind made casting a pain and unpleasant to sit on the sand but right on high tide ended up with a Flathead 2 whiting and 2 bream not bad for a quick little session..

Plenty of people would be happy with a little haul like that including me.Well done!

Crabing on Tuesday 12.Caught 6 blue swimmers.3boats in same area, They had a lot more pots out than me on my own. Not many crabs at all between us, had to work for them tried 3 different locals all the same. Where are all the crabs gone???.Couple years ago would pick up 10 crabs in a few hours. Read a story about lake prawns disappearing any thoughts. Prawns down crabs down or is it just a cycle.

I'm surprised the place isn't fished out all together with the amount of imbeciles fishing it.

There are a few about, just have to be in the right spot at the right time. The jewies cruise about along the drop offs, so are on the move most of the time. Fished the same spot 2 weeks ago for nothing but pickers.

They might be in Gymea Bay today, Lilli Pilli tomorrow.

    Dave.

Or in your boat the following day.Top stuff as usual mate.

LdMy understanding was they didn't have foam just an empty chamber. The fact the hull has been painted twice may point towards what I mentioned earlier of some leaking along the welds ( hopefully not but the paint looks suss)

A good way to test for tiny cracks and pinholes along the welds is to run compressed air into the hull and make a soapy solution in a spray bottle spraying all suspect welds. If you see the soapy suds bubbling you've found a compromised weld that will allow water into the hull.

Spraypainting  the hull tells me they did it for aesthetic reasons or that the boat has been damaged in some way either on the trailer, hit rocks an perhaps split the welds open etc, etc.

Look at all welds and ask yourself if they all look uniform in appearance? Is the bead(weld) the same thickness and texture throughout the boat?Does the weld spatter look uniform if any? There's ways to tell if you do some detective work.

  9. I doubt 10litres of water(10kg) would be the issue to make it lean like you say. That bung screw without it's o-ring should be replaced ASAP.I'd be draining all the water you can out of the hull then blowing compressed air in there if you can get access to it.Then letting it air dry tilted on the trailer with the bung/s removed for a few days before sea  trialing it again before moving on to plan B.

  10. I also notice that when she is on the trailer, it lists slightly to the right aswell!

    The above was your comment.

It is impossible for your boat to list to one side on a correctly set up trailer. If it's listing to starboard in the trailer the roller cradles are lower on that side than the port side.

You could load the boat up on the starboard side with bags of cement and as long as the trailers rollers where even and could support the weight she'd sit there as straight as a die.

    Something strange is happening here.

If at rest in calm water it lists to one side it is a weight distribution issue.

I don't know what underfloor structure your running but some boats have sealed chambers that if they get compromised and say water got in to the chamber on the starboard side it would list to that side if the weight of the water was substantial.Otterwise it is weight somewhere uneven on the deck.

    Thanks Fabian,

I suspected that you would find this post eventually and help me out!

That all makes sense. What I have been finding is that there ends up being over spray of "dry-ish" paint on the margins of the blend. Can I just buff those out?

    Cheers and thanks again.

    Jim

You have that overspray(Dry edge) because with the spray can you can't thin the paint out every coat and spray past the last coat like I mentioned. The purpose of thinning each coat out like I described is you are basically dissolving the previous coats dry edge more and more as the paint is getting thinner and the solvent(Thinners)in the paint basically disolves that previous edge while it's still relatively wet until it becomes almost non-existent to the naked eye.

If you try to buff it now you will run through the edge of the blend and will end up with a very pronounced line(edge) where the blend ends and the existing paint continues that will be noticeable for sure.

The key to a good blend is firstly a good colour match and being able to thin the paint each coat to hide that edge from the previous one.

Be mindful that no matter how good a blend you do there will always be that very fine edge that can be exposed with careless buffing or polishing as it's very easy to rub through that edge.

A good blend requires a very light buff by hand and being mindful of it in the future if you haven't clearcoated over the entire repair which I would highly recommend if it's a solid colour or metallic for that extra durability.

    Hope I'm making sense mate.

    Hi Raiders,

About 12 months ago I fixed up some blistering paint on my Quintrex.

The paint was blistered so I sanded it back to bare metal and used some etch primer followed by Telwater White all straight out of the can.

The result was and remains excellent but the area was on a corner of the boat rather than on a large flat surface so it was easy to mask off and blend in.

The boat had a few bubbling paint issues inside the first 5 months and the dealer fixed these for me at no charge and they have not resurfaced 3 years later. Similarly, the one I fixed has also, at least after 12 months, has not suffered any problems.

I now want to tackle some other blistering on some larger surfaces and as I am happy with the result straight our of the can I would like to continue this way as I touch up a few small areas. So I have a  question for those more experienced than myself.

Is there a way of blending small areas on larger flat panels so you don't have to respray the whole area?

Your help would be much appreciated.

    Cheers

    Jim

You answered your own question I think mate.It doesn't matter if a blends on the corner, side or top of the boat it's all done the same.I don't know how you blended from a can but with a spray gun I prepare the paint work,Etch, prime then give the primered area a coat and let tack off. Then I thin the paint a little more and give the area another coat flicking the edges out another few centimetres, and so on into the existing paintwork.Thats what a blend is in effect. You get coverage over the patch(Primer)on the first coat and then every subsequent coat you thin the paint down and spray into the existing paintwork with a flick of the wrist at the end of the gun stroke blending the new paint into the old.

If you are painting metallics which your not you'd clearcoat over the entire panel masking off to a edge if possible.

    Hope this makes sense.

    I feel for ya.

Fished from one of the jetties just downstream from the bridge yesterday for doughnuts. Well, worse than that really - got 2 flatties and 3 bream, all between 1 and 2cm undersized.

None of them had swallowed the hook, so at least they all went back healthy.

Lucky it was you that caught them and not some of the idiots that frequent the area keeping undersized fish.At least you got something and hopefully you still had a good time like we always do no matter what.

As a kid, I found the river leading up to the lake fished very well during the day, night time was not very productive (except for the prawns)

Anchored up across the channel for the prawns, hook up a small prawn, drop it out the back of the boat and you would occasionally score a big whiting.

Night time under the bridge would produce a tailor at times - so long as some numb nuts did not drop his line into your boat.

I've caught some nice flathead, whiting and tailor over the years both during the day and at night. The tide really scoots on the run-out since all the work done to the entrance as I'm sure your well aware.

I thought it was us but there were plenty of people there catching bugger all last night.Drifting the main channel and the drop off usually produces something but it was the worse I ever seen it last night.

  15. Fished Windang for a few hours last night and couldn't turn a reel except for a puffer fish keen on suicide and the Mrs catching a small ray.The tide was really moving and made it difficult.Other than that not even a nibble on various baits. The highlight off the night was dragging some dills line fishing from the bridge with my boat.I dragged his line from the bridge to the ramp then happily cut his line while he was yelling out the whole time.

      That's fishing I guess.

Just a few questions I am curious about:

    1) Fishing with a spinning reel and with bait. When a fish is about to eat the bait does the fish automatically hook itself or I would need to yank the rod up all the time? Asking this because I see in some videos of people drag on the reel going off and they run back to their reel to fish it in.

That's because those guys running to their reels on telly are usually using circle hooks where the fish basically hooks itself under drag pressure.

Sometimes the fish hit baits hard and will hook themselves, other times they nibble at it and you need to be patient and let them swallow the bait before lifting the rod tip up swiftly for the hookup.

I usually hold my rod tip up at a 45deg angle and when I feel the bite drop it down to give the fish some slack line for a few seconds, then lift the rod up and 9 times out of ten the fish is on.Practice different things.

    2) For land based fishing around Sydney what is the best bait to use for Bream and Snapper? Please list fresh baits and servo baits. Also what setup rig should be good for these species?

There is no best bait,it depends on what they prefer on the day.Sometimes it will be prawns, others it will be pillys etc.

I would take a few baits like pillys, prawns, squid etc and try different baits to see what works on the day.

I've caught bream and pan sized snapper using baits like pillys, prawns, whitebait, squid, chicken gut, mullet, salted tailor fillets, etc, etc.

Plenty of guys knock Servo baits but in the end they can and do catch fish.Live or Frozen is superior of course but don't be fooled that servo bait won't catch fish because it will.

    3) What is the main thing to do or need to heighten the chances of catching a fish?

This is something I need to do more.Get out there and experiment with various baits, rigs, locations and question everything.

    Thanks guys!

    Hey all,

just wondering what you use and maybe make in the way of rod holders in your boat. In mine I have the built in holders in the gunwale, plus a few of those scotty adjustable ones, but was wondering what others might have done in the way of making their own with conduit or similar.

Thinking of knocking up a few extras, but not sure the best way to go. Appreciate any comments and pics if you have them too.

    cheeers

    Dave

I made a simple rack to transport my rods /net when underway just using some lengths of pvc with a notch cut out for the reel stems.Simple and it works well.If you want rod holders to fish with and attach on the gunnels there's heaps of designs on line.Type in Pvc rod holders.I was going to make some to try but haven't got round to it.When I do I'll put up a post.

I've gotten a couple of flatties down the end at shoalhaven heads. Not as many or the sizes of last year at the same time though.

There are fish consumption warnings for West of nowra bridge too.

    Thanks for the heads up.

Be careful taking fish from the Newcastle Area and the Sholhaven area as there is another poison outbreak something to do with the foam from the fire fighters making shit toxic not good. they are suggesting only eat max 150grams

Not good at all.I think I'll stick with the lake then.

    Cheers.
