Well guys, after receiving my primer bulb with hose and fittngs, I decided to connect it all up and give her a crank.

After pumping the bulb for a while, noticed that the bulb wasn't getting hard. Disconnected the connector at the engine and pumped again. This time, she got hard. Anyway, connected the fuel line connector to the engine again, pushed in the key and turned it (holding it in) aaaaaaand........nothing!! :ranting2:

She's turning over but won't start. After another 10 attempts and still not starting!!:ranting2::wife:

Tried it with choke on and choke off.....made no difference a all.

So, take off the cover on the carbies and noticed that the carbies were fairly dry. Take the spark plugs out as well and they're not much better....maybe a couple of drops on each plug. For some reason, she's not getting enough fuel. OK, thought that if I can get her to kick over somehow, she might pull some fuel through and get going. So, next plan was to get some pre-mixed fuel out of the tank and put it in a spray bottle and spray inside the carbies. Did that aaaaaand she kicks over only to die after 2-3secs....:ranting2:

Repeated this process about 6-7 times and had the same outcome every time. Decided then to spray in the carbies as well as inside the plug holes.......STILL THE SAME OUTCOME.....GRRRRRRRR :ranting2::chair::wife:

Take the cover off the filter, looks fairly clean inside.

Then....I started getting other thoughts and ideas on how I could get rid of the problem, the boat and the petrol.....

Where am I going wrong guys? :(:1crybaby:

Sounds like a classic case of a stuck needle and seat.If your spraying pre-mix into the carburettor and its trying to start your not getting fuel into the carburettor.I would diagnosed it by a process of illimination.when you pump the primer bulb is fuel filling the fuel filter?if yes, then the problem lies between there and the carby.

Pump the primer bulb until hard and remove the carby fuel bowl drain screw with a rag held underneath to capture spillages.Fuel should come out.If not, remove the carby and pull the fuel bowl off to check that the fuel float is not stuck in the horizontal position. With no fuel in the bowl the float should be sunken into its housing meaning the fuel needle is lifted in its bore leaving it's seat passage open to allow fuel into the bowl.If the bowl is horizontal it means the needle and seat are closed which won't allow fuel into the fuel bowl.Sometimes lifting the float or pushing it down ever so gently will free the needle and seat up,other times it will need replacing. If you remove the bowl and there's debris in there you may have  clogged jets too.

Personally I would pull the carby off and give it a good clean at the minimum anyway as it's been sitting for a number of years.Again I'm tired and can't think too straight but if you have compression and spark you are missing fuel in the equation.Hope i made sense.

  2. Mrs was complaining for a while now that when she came out of the pool she had to go inside to rinse her hair in the shower.Well,I decided to go back in the shed and make her up a shower on a post so she doesn't have to far to go that she can use outside.

I don’t know PaddyT - I know new cars have 3yrs inspection free period. But cars don’t get dunked in salt water - boat trailers do. You can get a fair amount of corrosion on trailer brakes that are not maintained in 12mths ... let alone 3yrs.

    Cheers Z

Agree 1000%.But saying that even new cars it doesn't take much of a dill to wear out brake pads, handbrakes, clutches, tyres etc within 3yrs.But they do have to draw the line somewhere I guess.

  4. 53 minutes ago, PaddyT said:

Simple- there are so many poorly maintained , crappy , rusted out boat trailers that the RMS wants them all inspected - I do think they could exempt ones less than 3 years old though.

If that was the case wouldn't every trailer regardless of weight be inspected? After all they all get wet and can be poorly maintained, crappy rusted out trailers yes?I think you'll find the main reason it's how it is know is to ensure that the braking system is in operable condition as that is the #1 safety item on a boat trailer/car being able to stop hence the brake test being done when renewing your rego on a car.

You’re sitting on a goldmine. I saw a guy at Glebe markets with hardwood framed mirrors that he was selling for $200 a pop!

Yeah, you certainly don't find this hardwood at your local Bunnings.Hardwood is like many things and is becoming rarer with the cost of it going further north all the time.

  6. An older, white haired man walked into a jewelry store one Friday
    evening with a beautiful and very young woman at his side;
He told the jeweler he was looking for a special ring for his
    girlfriend.

The jeweler looked through his stock and brought out a $36,000 ring and showed it to him -
The old man said, "I don't think you understand, I want something VERY special."

At that statement, the jeweler went to his special stock and brought another ring over.
"Here's a stunning ring at only $50,000 ," the jeweler said.
The young lady's eyes sparkled and her whole body trembled with
    excitement.......
The old man seeing this said, "We'll take it!"

The jeweler asked how payment would be made and the old man stated, by cheque -
"I know you need to make sure my cheque is good -so I'll write it now and you can call the bank Monday to verify the funds and I'll pick the ring up Monday afternoon," he said.

Monday morning, a very perplexed and disappointed jeweler phoned the old man; "There's no money in that account sir?."

"I know", said the old man, "but can you imagine the weekend I had!?"

That's it!!! I'm waiting until winter to fill my car to get to work next week.

In all seriousness all tanks must have a breather/valve to prevent such things from happening. If he filled it to the brim and these are not working as they should(Clear/opening closing) what you experienced will occur.

Same thing with portable tanks.Fill them full and leave the breather slightly unscrewed and fuel will expand and leak out the breahet in hot weather. My tank blows up like a ballon in the stinking heat in the garage with a closed breather and it's never fully full.

Always fill your vessel or vehicles on a cold day. If fuel expands on hot days then the provider sells less for the price.

Hello   Thanks for all the replies.   My trailer is rated for GVM 1.5 tonne.  There is some surface rust here and there but all the lights work etc.    I can't get it in until the day it is due so I will let you know how it goes.

    Bear

Surface rust is fine. It's dirty big rusted through holes and rusted out cross  members etc you don't want.

Thanks Rick, but I did forget to mention a few things.

    Thanks Fab.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that she's a half cabin and therefore she doesn't have a pull start as she is ignition switch/key turn only. Battery is capult but I will be using my battery off my big boat to start her up. That battery is new and starts my 115Hp with ease (760cca). I told my mate what I will be doing to the boat as I don't want to spend any more money on her as she has cost me a fortune already. The battery and impeller will be his responsibility once she is up and running. After all, he is getting it at a bargain.

No worries mate.I meant to mention last night to just go over the operation of all the controls.

Check that the helm is free to turn, the same with the gear selector (after it's running on the muffs),check the condition of the anodes, lights, wheel bearings etc.

Hope your mate enjoys her more than the tree did because if it say there much longer it would of grown it's own roots.

Curious to know what your number one goal everyone has for this summer season of fishing. We all fish differently and are at different levels of experience.

Me personally I’d be stoked to catch a a feed of blue swimmer crabs. I’ve never targeted them before in my local system. I’d like to catch/eat enough so that I might have gout in time for winter 2018!

    I'll be happy if I catch a fish,any fish,any size,any type.Ohh and if I can lose more than one bait every 2hrs.?

    Hello Raiders,

I have a question for the outboard experts.

I have another boat that I have had in storage at my in laws for the past 6yrs.

This was my first boat that I purchased about 10yrs ago and she's an old 4.6mtr Ally Craft (I think 80's model) with a 50Hp Johnson 2 stroke.

I started to do her up an spent quite a bit on her....new trailer (used only twice since purchase) , new custom bimini, new seats, new pedestals, new bait board, new steering cable set up, etc.....you get the gist.

Anyway, the time has come for me to move the boat due to the fact that the in laws have started to build a Granny Flat and its in the way now. As it won't be returning there anymore and as I have a newer larger boat that I use these days, I need to get rid of it. As its been sitting under a tree, it was quite run down. Last weekend, I spent two days cleaning her up and shes starting to look good again.

To cut the long story short, my mate is really keen to buy her from me but I haven't started the engine in 6yrs. So, I bought new spark plugs, new leads and replaced the old ones. Also, I took the prop off...cleaned it, re-greased it and re-fitted. I drained the gear oil and replaced it with new oil. I have ordered a new primer bulb (as the old one you could use as a cricket ball :o) with hose and connectors which should be delivered tomorrow. Will replace that tomorrow after work. Took the fuel tank out and drained the the 6yr old fuel. Cleaned the tank and re-fueled with fresh fuel. Added 2 stroke oil mixture to the fuel (50:1).

The only thing I can see is to try and kick her over.

Before I do......did I miss something OR should I do something else before turning that key????

My mate wants to buy the boat but wants to see the outboard running first.

Thanks for the help in advance guys....

    Cheers

    Dave

You don't mention the carby, battery etc.I would take the Bowl/s off the Carburettor/s and drain them at a bare minimum and clean the fuel filter or replace and check all the lines etc.I would remove the plugs and squirt some pre-mix down the cylinders then turn her over by the flywheel or a quick burst of the pullstart or ignition switch with the safety off before firing her up for real.An impellor check/replacement wouldn't go a stray either.Im tired and can't think to clearly right now but these things I mentioned should help and of course make sure you have a good, charged battery.

    HI

my trailer dose not have brakes but it still needed inspection as the weight on the rego is 750kg the rule for brakes is 751kg and over

its a bit over kill as my boat is a 4.5 quninne fish raider c/c

i go to a guy who knows the rules and it passed ok

    jim

I bet you it is either lighter or heavier than exactly 750 kg.Just think if it's 749kg you don't need to worry about it.

Just checking Fab!  Checks of trailers with mechanical override brakes are pretty much as you say - the only thing I'd add is the D-shackles need to be the load rated/certified ones (usually dipped with yellow paint) - some inspectors will pick you up on that.

If the trailer is electric/hydraulic braked ... or has break away braking system - then the inspection may also include the charging, in car monitoring of the breakaway battery condition.  These are mandatory for rigs over 2T and you have to go to a HVIS for the rego inspection. If you have less then 2T rig but have this breaking system then its a grey area I guess - best to call RMS and see what they want.

    Cheers

    Zoran

Well said mate. It's got me thinking now about how many little boats and trailers like mine under the 750kg wouldn't pass if they where tested?Judging by some of the rigs you see at the Ramps I'm guessing more than a handful.

  16. I don't experience any of those two issues as I don't get mist or fog in the garage. But yes, like the guys said the cloth, chamois trick with rain x or head outside with a balaclava and woollen beanie on if your allergic to the cold.

    Bear....Braked or unbraked trailer?

    Cheers

    Zoran

I'm guessing he'd. have a braked trailer with his rig mate.

What raging said is pretty much what they all do mate and some check for rust.

If your trailer is neat and tidy with working brakes, lights, good tyres and bearings,Appropiate hitch, chains and minimal rust you'll be right.

    Fab that is fantastic.

Have you come across something you couldn't do yet? :):)

Thanks Tara.As a matter of fact there's 2 main things I can't do,One is catch fish like Yowie and secondly is understanding Women.Just kidding on the second thing.Ive worked out that if you give women these 3 things they are happy as larry.

The first is these home grown of course.image.thumb.jpg.e151f117b4b6180a344847a9bb2c4a4f.jpgNone of that Woolies rubbish.

Secondly they like someone that can cook for them.Especially anything meat like these schnitzels, mash and home grown veggies of course.image.thumb.jpg.26ac519ede222eb58cb07a45c20be78a.jpgand if she's an animal lover and wants a Rag doll kitten it's a must you by it for them.lol.image.thumb.jpg.fa3859d4923a3abad7005cdf66791e9f.jpgand lastly,Being a good listener goes a long way to enjoying 24yrs as a partnership like I have with my wife and supporting each other through the good times and the bad.

I hope I have you young blokes some tips on getting that dream girl.

Oh I nearly forgot,Being able to fix, make, dismantle, install, and do nearly anything goes a long way too.

Hows that for an answer Tara?

That beautiful old hardwood is too good to be used outdoors as a compost bin IMO. The best ones swivel so you can turn it and turbo charge the compost process (3 months). I would have thought you’d break out the welder and take to a steel 44 gallon drum and a few hinges and brackets.

I have a lifetime supply of hardwood I've gathered mate and then some. 3 months!I get usable compost in about a  month turning it every 3-4days hence the Popeye forearms. Those 44 gallon steel drums or barrels don't hold enough to be useful.

I also have wheelie bin compost bins I made scattered about.
