  1. Paternoster with 2 droppers with either 4/0 circle hooks or 3 or 4 ganged 3/0 with 3oz star sinker. A very effective rig for salmon & taillor with some great flatties as by catch
  2. Well done Kaktis I had a similar capture on Friday from CG wharf. After 4 hours of not so much as a bite I come up tight on the 1-3kg rod I’m using to chase yakka’s. A nifty 5 minute fight eventually has a 60cm kingy on the deck. Gear used was: Rod – 7’ Strudwick Sic Stik Pro 1-3kg Reel -Daiwa Advantage 1000 Line -6lb crystal fireline & 6ld fluro leader Hook - #12 long shank mustad
  3. Hi guys, Just wondering is anyones picked up hartail in the harbour recetly? I'm possitive I had one grab my yakka last week but wasn't hooked & let it go when he hit the surface. Kingys
  4. Hi Shaggy, I was fishing the harbour landbased a few back & my mate caught a 60cm samson fish. Put up a great fight on light gear
  5. I've used Sufix braids for years now & have never had a problem with wind knots. An overall great choice if you ask me
  6. Hi Raiders, Friday afternoon saw me down at one of the harbour jetty’s along with the usual crowd. As I arrived a guy was hooked up to a salmon of about 2kg. In his esky was 5 bonito so it looked like fishing was good. My regular offsider was already there with a big leathery in his bucket & after 10 minutes I added one as well. Yellowtail were hard to come by & I guess the bonito that were plentiful & feeding were the cause of the shortage, however we did manage a few & each one was taken either by a bonny or the resident cormorant. Anyway after picking up a bonny myself I was completely smoked by something that took at least 80 -100m of 8lb line. Then my offsider hooks into a good fish which was called for a small kingy. As it came to the surface though it was obvious it wasn’t a kingy. When eventually netted after a spirited 5 minute fight a Samson fish hit the jetty deck. I’ve never seen one caught & not heard of them in the harbour. It went about 60cm. I’ll load up a pick when I work out my phone. Paul
  7. Things I like in no particular order: The attitude of the members & how they relate to each other The amount of advice & help that is on tap on a huge variety of subjects & issues relating to fishing & boating The moderators & how they operate without being intrusive in an obvious way The site design & layout & how easy it is to navigate & a special mention regarding the recent update.... great work by those involved. and did I mention the members??
  8. G'day Fisholb, I've had great success with snapper snatchers off the beach. You have to be carful to leave pleant of hook point exposed as they are circle hooks. Just use a piece of pillie or or any other fresh bait. Fish with the reel set at fighting drag & the salmon/tailor/flathead.... hook themselves. I've tried the surf poppers & have not had any luck what soever. Not 1 fish hooked. Kingys
  9. Mate PM Hodgey. I know he's not living at Tuross any more but he knows the place inside & out & I'm sure he can provide some great advice.
  10. Hi Stinky, Mate if you're using circle hooks you don't really need to set them. Chances are if you gave a good strike with this last one you pulled the hook right out of his gob. If you're using circles & I'd be using bigger than 3/0's too, you fish with your reel in fighting drag & let the kingy hook himself. Under no circumstance should you strike to set the hook when using circles. That's my experience anyway. Doesn't matter if you're chasing bream or marlin... let the fish hook itself. Even so you will loose some no matter what you do. Rigging as you do is ok or through the boney part of the nose. Kingys will eat a yakka head first 99% of the time so you need to place the hook at the front end of the bait. Kingys
  11. Seems plenty of salmon are way up the Parra River at the moment. A couple of weeks ago i hooked one at Rhodes while tossing an SX40 around chasing bream. Was a similar size as yours & didn't it go hard on 3lb line.
  12. The life jacket rule on under 4.8m only applies when alone on enclosed waters or at night on enclosed waters. They are mandetory for open waters at all times. See this link to maratime: http://www.maritime.nsw.gov.au/sbh/safety_equipment/lifejackets.html
  13. I run one on my medium beach rod. It's loaded with 15lb Fireline & it's accounted for some pretty big salmon & tailor. Only problem I can say is the don't cast particularly well but well enpough for most situations.
  14. A 4000 or 5000 size reel is fine for the sort of fishing you mention. All the reels mentioed would suit. With that size though I'd be opting fron 12 or 14lb braid to give you a nice amount on the spool.. just in case you hook somethiing with a bit of go in it. Mono on that size reel would limit how much you can fit on.
  15. I run the sinker on the braid & have never had a problem. You just need to be aware of ware & tear. I use a 10 turn uni knot stright to the swivel.
  16. Hi Geoff, I saw that same set up as you made in one of the fishing mags a few months ago & thought how bloody simple is that.... and it works Kingys
  17. I've used the ones from Bova with great sucess as has my brother. The advantage with them is if you do have side effects you can talk to them & they wiill adjust the compounds to suit untill you get it just right. Kingys
  18. I've got a 10' and.a 12' Wilson live fibre and they are very good rods but if you ask me my fav is my wifes 11' Snyder Glass Magbream. A composite blank that is very light, has a nice soft sensitive tip which is perfect for bream and whiting but plenty of grunt to tackle sambo's and tailor. Kingys
  19. G'day mate, Often there is no high spot to view a beach so here is how it was explained to me. You need to be looking for waves that break over a sand bar (light coloured water) some way out off the beach. That break then runs in through a darker (deeper) section of water & then breaks on the shore. The section of darker water where the waves seem to flatten out after breaking over the sand bar is the gutter. Gutters have a flow to them so will have an entrance & exit from the beach & these are often very productive places to fish too. The exit, where the water is moving out to sea is what people call a rip. Fishraider member Gary Brown has produced a pretty informative & inexpensive book on beach & rock fishing & I highly recommend it. Also there is a very experienced guy who does beach fishing charters in Sydney & an afternoon or morning spent with him is good investment if you ask me Kingys
  20. You can use Seabreeze.. the link is at the top of the Fishraider banner
  21. Hey Honk, My light tackle beach rod is a Snyder Glass Mag Bream 11' It's a composite blank, very light & easy to handle. I run a Diawa 4000 size reel with 10lb braid. It's a fantastic set up & has accounted for some whopper bream & whitting. This is by far my favourite beach outfit My heavier outfit is a Wilson Live Fibre 12' that is a graphite blank & again very light & easy to handle. On it I run a Shimano 4500 baitrunner & 15lb braid & it has accounted for everything up to 3kg salmon & tailor with ease. I've spun metals on both with success but I think the Wilson is more suited to this sort of fishing. I've got an Alvey as well but I'm in the unco box as well & haven't been able to mater it yet although I haven't used it very much to be honest Paul
  22. First was a 68cm flattie on my 5th cast using a 100cm black opal squidgie shad. I was on a charter in Botany at the time & my Mrs had already caught a 73cm version. I thought this is bloody easy..... never been able to replicate that catch although my Mrs has... About 4 years later & I picked up my 1st bream on a ecogear SX40 . The bream went 29cm Kings
  23. G'day mate, There are a few popular spots to chase kings in summer land based in the harbour. Clifton Gardens & Balmoral wharves are not bad spots as are Greenwhich & pier 2. All get crowded & conditions can get difficult at times due to the number of fisho's. I've caught kings at all of thes spots though. Good luck
  24. Used to know a guy who lived at The Oaks & he regularly fished the lake. Many times was chased by security guys but never was caught. He showed me pics of brown trout that must have been well over 5kg & rainbows almost as big. Lucky bastard. Not sure I'd try it these days though
  25. Hey Paddy, Next time you come across a school of yakka & slimeys like that stick a big hook in one & drop it over as a livie. You never know what's lurking under the school. You might just get lucky. Kingys
