  10. well guys i first tempted fate just over nine months ago and threw my special lure around hoping for the best and now its finally paid dividends... we had a few hairy moments and over a 14 hr fight but eventually i was able to get my special catch onto the bragmat and 50cm and def a keeper... having endured 4 tours of duty previously helped my alot and showed how much a pro she was and the professionel onlookers cheered her throught it all.. correct weight was 3.56kg and i have finally ticked off the female species box to complete my set.... a pic of the special weigh in... cheers... a very tired but happy fisho .. ps, my measure was actually the official one used not just for pics.. also would like to openly thank the great work done by the nursing staff at Hornsby hospital.. pure Angels sent from heaven i say.... :1worthy:
  11. lets see.. where to start.... SQUID..... SQUID....... SQUID..... oh yeh ...did i mention live Squid........ if you can get live or fresh squid you will improve yr chances heaps.. on some days they will smash anything but some will pass up everything on offer so best baits give better chances but have alternatives as i have on odd occasion got more hits on strip baits while livey left untouched.. as for style, poor mans downrigger using a big jig or barrel sinker troll 1knt.. or just pull up near markers in harbour and toss unweighted (or lightly weighted) baits towards structure.. keep eye out for surface activity and even if they are not kings on surface sometimes they will be under feeding on scraps etc from the bonnies/salmon/taylor etc .. i like to move around looking for em but some prefer to anchor up where they will eventually pass on there movements with tide... good luck... hope this helps ... cheers...steve......
  12. hi Kilp, looks like you have been sorted out by these 2 blacky masters already.. what matt said is prob on the money i recon.. prob wrong depth as they are gen not shy off the stones and would think bait loss or missed downs at the least.. pretty much this time of yr off the stones they are very prolific imo and last yr sept/nov and into dec i know they were polled in big numbers by a few i talk to off local ledges.. i havnt fished the stones for way too long and was going to hit em hard on local ledge this spring/summer but plans changed due to bub arriving soon... so i cant help with trip unfortunately for a while... give me a pm reminder in a couple days as i may have something of interest for ya.... a few weeks ago the big schools in pitty thinned right out but if ya spend the time you should get something if you persist... best to go with someone and learn what they do.. as Royce mentioned when quiet like this you really have to work for them so ask why the fisho is doing certain things like depth/bait presentation/drifts etc.. when fishing the stones as always be careful.. eastern suburbs has alot of great spots and a couple that can be tricky in certain conditions.... dont play follow the leader thinking ill be right cause he is there 2... i watched a guy fish a spot last yr that was down right stupid and some other guys came with gear,i told them not safe and couple minutes later they walked back up and moved on... luckily they fiddled for long enough for big set to roll over ledge and not be near it.... they thanked me on way out, other guy just fished on and luckily didnt go in... im only saying this as a reminder to be safe as the chopper for my local ledges lands across the road in park during rescues and is too frequent an occurrence... good luck.. once you start catching a couple it will all fall into place as they are not as difficult a fish to catch as some think... just very frustrating at times.... hope this helps... cheers,,,,steve....
  13. eating fish from the harbour is a iffy subject and def if in doubt then not worth the risk and is a personal thing.. some eat whatever and some practice catch an release only in the harbour.. the mullet i got were not river mullet and caught in pittwater.. they are real good bait fresh and live are unreal but ones i got were originally going to be slab bait for beach jew untill i changed my mind.. fresh and cleaned proper they are tasty and the fight on light gear is awesome and something i havent done for way to long... cheers...steve....
  14. Hi guys, well its been pretty hectic for me with work lately and boat is landlocked due to new bub arriving soon so have been doing sneaky sessions either nailin the local blackies or just flicking for squid etc.. saw what i thought were pike out in the darkness few nights ago chasing small bait and hitting my bread burly so put squid rod away and thought hmmmm maybe they are mullet.. they didnt want to eat my pilly strip so i thought yep.... big mullet.. problem is i have no bread for bait.... i drain some of the burly out and with great difficulty get some to stay on hook.. flick out and keep missing em due to bait falling off hook.. eventually i get some crusty bit to stick and bang im on and tail walking surface smashing action erupts.. woooo hoooo i have not targeted them for yrs and forgot how much fun on light gear they are... i end up nailin 4 nice big ones in half hr and decide at last min to boneless & skinless fillet em... herbed crumbed and yep forgot about how they go on the plate.. yummo... mrs says why not go get more so after the shock of her telling me to go fishing i head off for round 2 last night.. got there prepared with plenty of bread and rod rigged but wind, tide looked to be conspiring against me this time.. had a good burly trail off into the distance but alas not alot of action, even the local yakkas were staying down deep... hmmmm i think i will set a deep bait see whats around.. within a couple min my float sinks an inch or so them pops up,then goes down an inch again again so i raise rod to see whats going on and bang i feel good weight and im on to something bigger than yakka and not a mullet.. it thumps this way and that and i steer it around while tightening the very lose mullet drag.. color.. big bream.. zzzzzzz......zzzzzzz... then bugger me.... its a blacky... more zzzzz and i then realise no net and this thing is a barrel of a fish and big.. 6lb line is looking edgy for lift and then a guy brings over his huge barrel bucket (like bunnings ones) and i try swimming it in,turn him 3 times and bugger me,top hooks now caught on handle.. im now looking at this fish thinking here we go another good fish lost like last few blacky trips to bad circumstances. well lady luck shinned and ol matey was able to dig deep ,well took 3 or so heart stopping goes and we lift it onto the deck... wooooohoooo... i am buzzing as i have got blackies on dawn and dusk before but never in pitch black of the night.. my first night time blacky... i have dropped live worms, nippers, weed etc on the nose of em in the past for zip and was convinced they wont feed late into night but am glad to be proven wrong here... fish was aprox 40cm and very very fat, full of roe and ribbon weed and little bit of bread. gave it another half hour for zip so filleted fish and home i go a happy chappy... heres a pick of our make shift landing net... bear in mind this barrel is bloody huge.. i think its one of those ones from bunnings with big handles each side... cheers...steve....
  15. ill ring ya later this arvo.. bit busy with work atm... a plan is in the making...
  16. hi craig, sorry buddy my inbox was full... the blackies will be getting patchy around now but if ya lucky can still find em in good schools still doing there thing..late bloomers .. some places fish better certain tides as fish move with tide .. if you can go to a spot they will hold up at night with good cover like wharves, big kelpy alcoves outa current etc then get there before sunup and use burly to hold em and you should be in with a good chance.. this has been great success for me over last few yrs as fishing times limited so home early to family duties and usually get a feed.. sometimes they just move on and one day can be very different from the next but the early morn trick usually works till the buggers go play elsewheres.. i used to get my cuz who was a gun blacky boy to rig me up,bait up put my float an inch away from his and guess whose float went down yep sometimes the fishing gods are cruel... happened a couple times... keep at it and pay attention to when ya get downs certain spots etc and you should see a pattern... the ones i got this time were in pittwater but have got them in harbour and georges also last few weeks... cheers....steve......
  17. nice bag of blackies there stormy. well done.. they are still in good schools but will start to get patchy from here in, in the last couple weeks i have fished the georges, harbour and pittwater and had good results in each.. strangely the pittwater ones were smaller than normal but was only one session so might of just been smaller ones were quicker... Royce,im going to stock up with weed friday and give em a good nudge over long w/e so we should catch up.. anyways congrats again stormy... cheers....steve.....
  18. hi guys, got up at sparrows again sat morn and headed out to chase blackies for couple hrs. got to my spot deployed float and kept eye on it as i got a spoon of burly and as stopper reached float it just slowly went down, hmmmm not to worry as a hastilly rigged float mustnt be weighted correctly. as i deploy a bomb the floats now moving sideways bugger i lift rod and instant pandemonium breaks out. i have basically dropped a bait into fishes mouth and another has taken a liking to my second bait. well it didnt last long as i pulled hook on one and the second found something to snag me and snap the 6lb leader. .. what a start to the day and suns still not up proper.. i quickly deploy some burly and rig up and instantly im into em again .. woooohooooo .. they are not big but are very fiesty buggers and i stop using net after the 4th or 5th one in 15 min or so.. this bite lasted for about 90 min or so and as quick as the downs were they dissapeared and cruised off along the weed beds doing there thing.. in amongst the blackies i got 3 sergeons but only little tackers about 25cm but still fun to get.. i pulled the pin and was home by 9.30am to have brekky with kids.. kept a dozen for a feed to about 35cm and prob got about 20 or so all up.. not real big but as i said very fiesty buggers mostly.. if you were considering chasing blackies then get in while they are still hot as this is when they are easiest to catch and wont last much longer.. i tried to fish sunday but gave up as wind and rain made it uncomfortable... must be getting old as it never used to worry me. cheers...steve....
  19. was great morn out there Matt and with the varied downs makes it very challenging.. was a pitty the downs were very fussy but i think it was because there was mixed schools there of small fish(for this spot) and sergeons barging in every now an then... that spot is notorious for sergeons and pigs. the one i lost as you came over with net was either a pig or big blackie as when i turned him from under i saw him scoot out wide till hook pulled and was prob mid to high 40's . the other couple who buried me deep into kelp were prob big sergeons/pigs but will never know.. challenging days like that are soooo rewarding but if ya dont convert any then its sooo devastating on confidence ... thx for the company mate....
  20. that diary of yr old mans would make some mighty fine reading, wish my one woulda wrote it down but he used to say its all up here(pointing to head) bloody no good to me as he is no longer with us..... only started again on em 2 weeks ago after a long break and found them fussy one mid week morning sth side harbour got 2 legals in 2 hrs.. got a couple nice ones down georges too...ol mate told me couple weeks ago slaying em upriver.. ive found zoo fires on top half run up till rundown. gotta catch up for a fish soon.. cheers...steve....
  21. sorry guys, shoulda mentioned it was sunday session... had a nice day and got a good bag of fish.. when i go again and want company i will try give better notice... the blackies are everywhere in harbour/georges and hacking spawn feeding atm and should not be overly hard to catch with time spent.... cheers....steve.......
  22. that sounds like a great day out and to get beakies like that woulda been a big buzz... cheers...steve......
