  1. God no mate, September is when they are all waking up from a cold winter, there are plenty of rats about but not many keepers. Try some new markers perhaps upriver or if you have a downrigger use it til you locate where the kings are holding. I love using cuttlefish as a live bait, I much prefer them over squid but that might just be me.... Keep in mind cuttlefish are nasty lil buggers they can and will try to bite you. Dan
  2. Hah ha ha Yeah cameldownunder. Was just near the spit,,,, what is it with everyone knocking my pants? They are kinda red except for the guts, no not mine, fish, etc,.... They keep you warm and dry especially in winter, with the rain, single digit air temps, and wind,,,,,,,,,,,,, as for squid ink, I'd be happy if they were completely black. The regulars on the water know us,,,, me/Greg by what we wear, not by which boat I might be fishing out of this weekend. I love having multiple fishing mates as I don't own a boat, I just have the luxury of having a very good brother who fishes ALOT, and some very very good mates who take me out on their boats Dan
  3. Cheers Thanks nbdshroom! Hey fragmeister, its strange how they are like that,,, but that's kings for you,,, fussy buggers! Definitely not Dave, right time, right place, right bait and ALOT of luck Hah ha ha, love it,,, that's one of the score board for me Dory. appreciate it. So was I Harry, or a small jew, OR a small rat as it didn't pull a tick of drag. Thanks ALL!!! Was my first and definitely I hope it wont be my last,,,, I didn't eat it myself, but rather gave it to my mate Col whose boat I was onboard, a beginner who I felt bad for, especially after I lost his first ever king boatside, thou it was undersized I still felt guilty as I knew it wouldn't fit in his landing net and made a judgement call to swing it aboard :-(. My stuff up!!! I wish I could have taken a pic of him that day with his first ever king, rather that catch the dory, but I know there will be plenty of other opportunities. He was just happy to feel the fight of a king, and have a great feed. He absolutely loved the dory. Bring on this weekend. Dan
  4. Hit middle harbour on Sunday the 13/9/15. Went for some squid with a beginner, managed just the two squid before we set up in middle harbour for a early morning king. Got a few rat's with my neighbour Col in his boat, and my brother Greg, 30 metres away in his boat also got a few rats as well as being dusted a few times. It seemed to be the yakka's were the gun bait for the day over the squid which only accounted for 1 king out of the 5-8hook ups between the boats. I got a hit on a yakka which was strange as it came up easy, and 1/2 way up I'm waiting for it to wake up, thinking its a king playing possum,,, but it didn't. Was only when it was 3-4 metres down I saw why. A damn nice John Dory, netted it and it went 45cm on the dot. I'd like to submit this for catch of the month please admins, especially as between myself, and my brother Greg who a lot of anglers know on the water, this is only our 3rd ever dory of out of the harbour, and MY first ever Dan
  5. Its the best time of the year for BIG kings :-)
  6. tef1on is spot on here. We have over half a dozen 4500's B's. They are pretty much a bullet proof reel. And quite often a king, Jew, amber, Samson you name it will struggle swallowing a livey. This is where a btr comes into its own verse a conventional reel. Just wait til the btr mode kicks in and your losing line then strike. Doing this with a conventional reel can result in pull hook's and liveys being torn from your hooks. Just our 2 cents.
  7. A very very good mate of ours who is also a raider, did the exact same thing at Clifton about 5-6 years back. But it gets better, wasn't only HIS anchor he dragged up but ANOTHER anchor wrapped up in the chain of his anchor that someone had lost. . I wont mention this raider by name, but by gawd it was funny watching him drag up TWO anchors. Dan
  8. Hey mate was out at the FAD's the week before last, a lot of smaller dollies around 50-55cm taken on skirts. Wasn't till we decided to drift past with that we managed to find a few legals up to 70cm. They are thinning out very quickly, especially if memory serves me correct water temp was down to 21.7-22. Dan
  9. Ah nothing like spending time with family :-) Try a bait jig with abit of squid or prawn next time for your yakkas, just pray a king doesn't nail your bait jig. Know what you mean about Roseville, I got back there today(12.30-1pm) after hitting the FAD's and being on the water for over 10hours with a mate and I was cursing straight away!!! Dan
  10. Have only ever heard of a very few being caught at night. I do know a few spots at night where they school up in Sydney Harbour HOWEVER its "Commonwealth' land, and the fines are strict (BRING YOUR PLATINUM CARD), and they don't hesitate in dishing them out freely! Even if you do happen to get in their, good luck landing one as the structure is absolutely suited to their survival. So YES they do 'occasionally" feed at night, but you have to be lucky. Dan
  11. Hey Mike. Greg was in his tinny. Don't worry Dave with the water temps on the rise we are surely more likely of catching up. Dan
  12. Last night my brother got 17 so they were obviously on the bite. We have spent 8hrs there from 8pm to 4am for a big fat ZERO Dan
  13. Still heaps of kings about!! So if you get a few squid and have a downrigger try out all the markers & drop offs in the harbour. Dan
  14. Saw a guy catch a 60cm+ king on a squid jig about 4-5years back when the legal limit for a king was only 60cm. Dan
  15. The more jigs you have, the more options you have,,,,, you don't wanna know how many jigs we have, zori's, y'shita's, diawa's, etc... we do have a few small percentage of the el cheapo jigs. But you get what you pay for so unless the squid are on the bite, quality always out performs price. Spend the money and you get what you paid for. Dan
  16. I can tell you at 60cm+ they go damn hard, and are just as dirty fighters as kings! Dan
  17. If you stay at White Sands, lock your booze up. We where there late last year when Sydney copped over 80mm of rain in a week, and the local little scum bags where still out stealing booze from peoples eskies!!!!!!!!!!!Even when it was pouring rain, 2 punks walk past at 2am outside the fence of the park as I got up for a smoke. Didn't think anything of it, but they took booze from the neighbours esky. Tally for the trip over 7-10days,,,,, 6 crowns, 2 coronas, a JB premix, and 2 bottles of plonk, AND a bottle of coke (desperate) VS ZERO kings. Wouldn't have minded the booze being stolen if the fish were biting but they weren't. Dan PS White Sands is a great park, close to the shops, etc. And if they aren't chockers they might/have given us extra space. Last year we had 3 cars, 1 caravan, 1 cub camper, and a boat in there on 3 sites
  18. The petzel headlights are also very good. Though abit pricey Dan
  19. A Tyrnos 16 or 20 with a monster mesh! Not a cheap combo but it will handle kings easily! Dan
  20. Nice NZ kings mate... Beats all the rats we have been catching in Sydney lately. Did you bring my duty free booze back as I requested?? ;-) Dan
  21. Myself and my brother just got back from a week down there. Weather was crap but we still persisted for the 9days there, fished middle ground, the tubes and along the north and south head for not a single run. We downrigged live slimeys all over the place for a big ZERO. Heaps of slimies at middle ground, and off Murray's Beach, but squid where very scarce. Couldnt buy a single squid! After taking to a few of the locals at the pub a few 10kg kings have been bagged by those in the know but not many kings about yet. Water temp ranged from 18.4-19.2. Dan
  22. You cant beat the B series mate, they were on special a few months back in a few select sydney tackle shops. We bought every one we could find. We have 6 of them, regulary use 4 of them, and the other 2 are brand new in their box's waiting for the day something happens to the ones we use on a weekly basis. I also heard they have stopped making the D series if my info is correct............ Dan
  23. This happens alot to us when chasing kings, with triple & quadruple hook ups a regular thing. We just lock the drag up on the unattended rod & hope for the best whilst we bring in the first hook up. Dan
  24. Mate they are definately around!!!! My brother got 11 rats, 55-62cm earlier this week in middle harbour Dan
  25. Apperently it happened sometime between 11pm-1230 saturday night as it wasnt there when my brother Greg launched but he had maritime go screaming past him during these hours and it was there at 530am when he picked me up at the ramp,,,, It will be a right off I reckon. Dan
