  1. We were about 8 miles south of browns in 500. Outthere got a 5 way hookup on bluefin and a few others got bluefin yesterday as well. Current was still pushing downhill where we were. At the moment it's just a matter of driving over a good patch there doesn't seem to be any obvious area. Water temp inside 1000 was good for both yfin & bfin but over 1000 got up to 19.5

    Cheers

cool, ok Im gonna try on Wednesday, probably south east of browns at this stage

water is 22 off heatons, its crazy, probably still a marlin or two in that

  2. I can confirm at least 7good yellowfin up to 60kg caught today. We didn't find any but a boat with us did. We managed out bag limit of albies.. Had a mako eat one & a blue shark eating frozen stripes that we fed him. Did see a free jumping marlin in 150 fathoms

    Cheers

good stuff, where abouts were you guys, I might head out on Wednesday give it a crack

  3. We got 0.....one positive though of the trip, Stewy demoed his scent blazer teaser, it runs well.......may have to invest!

    Call on fish were spasmodic.

There was some good fish taken, just more 0's than success.

cool, no worries, let us know when you want some teasers

yeah i spoke to a guy down at the marina tonight who was out there, he didn't too seem happy, they came across nothing all day, they went as far as 10 mile south of heatons, he heard a couple of boats calling fish in.

Also now heard of a couple fish hooked at southern canyons on the cube, fighting them into the night apparently. Hopefully someone who got something will post later tonight or tomorrow.

By the way, I don't have any marks for the southern canyons, if anyone has the gps-co-ordinates it would be much appreciated :)

might try to get out there this week, maybe Wednesday or Friday.

  4. Scent Blazer and a few of the other guys who are more into this might like to comment. This snapshot is from Fishtrack this morning. Am I understanding this correctly, the water to me off JB looks good?

If I understand the convo on Altimetry correctly the area between those two bathtub swirls would be the place to hit?

Or the northern edge of the northern whirlpool, where there is also a temp break running.attachicon.gifImageUploadedByTapatalk1435964301.765128.jpg

I tried FishTrack last week for the first time. i don't think their maps are as good as rip charts for altimetry, it doesn't have as much detail.

But looking at your map, i would say the best spot is off Batemans Bay, what your looking for is the thick black lines with "0" on it. So at zero, you have low water on one side and high on the other, zero is the transition zone. Either side and on zero lines is where you want to be. If those zero spots are not within range i would go to somewhere the water is a minus, -10, -20, but avoid the high water areas 20 or higher.

i have drawn a red line on a rip chart map, a little either side of the red line and on the red line is where you want to be

  5. If it's not too complicated a question for a newbie like myself, what makes "good" altimetry scent blazer? I feel like I'm starting to understand currents, water temps / breaks etc, but altimetry is new to me... Always interested in learning more if you have time to explain or steer my in the right direction! Cheers

Altimetry in marine terms is the measure of the height of water to a fixed point eg a satellite.

Altimetry=Alltitude planes have altimeters to see how high or low they are flying.

Also relates to the measure of high and low pressure. Which is why it helps in fishing.

As in the atmosphere our weather is determined by high or low pressure systems, the same occurs in the oceans we have high and low pressure eddies.

Altimetry measures the heights of these in cm. Highs are upwellings lows are downwellings. High bring nutrient rich water to surface low does opposite. All you need to know is the best fishing is between these highs and lows on their edges. Think thats right lol. I may stand corrected.

the way I think of it it's like water running out of the bathtub, in middle of the eddy the water is lower and around the edges its higher, the ocean has heaps of large eddies, where there is a low eddy there has be high eddy next to it because the water has to go somewhere

so where the low eddy transitions into the high eddy is where all the nutrients wash up and that we the food chain starts, krill -> bait fish -> pelagics

in the middle of the high zones are sometimes dead zones because all nutrients are washed out and into the transition and low zones

you often find, current break, temp break and good altimetry are in the same area, normally the altimetry transitions are associated with the current and temp breaks

ripcharts has a pretty good tutorial and fishrack has a good one as well

  6. yeah I can see why they are getting fish down south, Bermi, etc. That cold break is only about 20miles out down there. Poor old Heatons is in the middle of that warmish patch, us Sydneysiders will probably have to wait a bit longer :) Also the altimetry is crap off Sydney.

  7. cool, Sydney can't be far off for yft and albacore then. Altimetry looks better off the Gong than Sydney at the moment.

I heard there are a few ppl heading out today off Sydney, hopefully they get fish as well.

    Well done

  8. I have got an trial account on fish track as well now

some of the info doesn't marry up, currents and altimetry are different between sites, It could just be a time difference, I will know by tomorrow

so far I think rip charts has better info for everything other than sst, I think fish track SST is better than standard ripcharts, however rip charts premium SST is like fish track regular SST, if that makes sense

altimetry and currents are way better on rip charts, i like to know current speed which rip charts has but i can't find on fish track, I like spots that have fast currents going into dead water, basically the edge of strong currents

  9. I dont see a problem. we never did get clear shots when there is cloud cover. We have just had nearly a month of overcast rainy conditions I would of thought all SST providers would of been the same. Today with the first clear day in a long time we have good pictures again. Nothing has changed.

they definitely have the better maps with more info on premium, but yeah sometimes they both suck because of the clouds

  10. If someone on here, or if several of you.........have a Premium Ripcharts subscription, and particularly if you have an iPad or iPhone that you run the app on whilst out chasing fish.

How about signing up for fishtrack just before your next run. Fishtrack has a 15 day free trial, so just cancel before your card gets charged.

It would be really good to get a true side by side report of the two, particularly out chasing the tuna.

Unfortunately my subscription to Ripcharts ends in a couple of weeks and as I said previously downgraded to the standard version (rant). So I can't do the fair comparison

I'll sign up to fishtrack and use the free trail this weekend, 80bucks USD is better than 169 usd, also as for the app aspect of it, you still have to be in mobile range to the get the live info and if you are in mobile range you can just access the website on the mobile and get the live info. they should just do an smart phone friendly version of the website, its almost the same as having an app

the best system is in the states, they have a weather/sst module that goes directly into your sounder, sst charts can be overlayed directly on your chart plotter, bummer we don't have that here, it would be a million times easier

    http://www.raymarine.com/view/?id=5277

as along you get sst, currents, altimetry, chlorophyll and true color its all you need for tuna or game fishing, so I am guessing fish tracks will be fine

  11. I use fish track and find it pretty good. It's easy to use. It does crash my iPhone sometimes but I'm running an old one.

I haven't had a rip chart subscription so can't really compare them to be fair.

cool, it looks like you get exactly the same information but in a different interface

so how much is Fish Tracks for a 1 year subscription?

  12. Same, PLUS, remember your talking USD....So $99 is currently aaround $130 and US$169 = AUD$220...depending on rate, plus the credit card companies conversion rate and charge.

My subscription with Ripcharts expires 15 July, I wont be renewing, I will be giving Fishtrack a go

yeah for forgot about that, its USD,

I expire in a month. I might try Fishtracks now before my Ripcharts account expires. Fishtracks have a 15 day free Premium trial.

its crazy, literally every good SST shot of Sydney is in Premium and all the Standard ones are just clouds, it's useless

  13. Currently using ripcharts and I like it, its pretty straight forward, but they just put this Premium option in and its an extra 69 bucks a year, so 169 a year now for Premium. All the good maps are in Premium and the Standard option that I currently have for 99 a year is now useless unless I pay the 69 to upgrade, so bloody annoying!

Is fishtrack as good or better and how much is it a year?

Might change over as a protest :)

  14. I'd be keen if we got 3 or 4 boats together lol

do you mean we head out 80miles with a group of 3-4 to boats. that's actually a good idea, make it lot safer and cover more ground. like tuna cowboys :)

I still wouldn't have the range, I'll have to wait until they come in a bit closer, I could probably push 60nm out but that would be pulling up at Heaton's and trolling from there onwards, I need to go slow down to conserve fuel I'd burn too much at 20knts plus.

  15. Do you know if they where taken by longlines or recs ?

recs, 80nm out on a 40 footer. 40 plus boat with a couple of big diesels 80nm would not be such a stretch, it would do 30knt so it would take around 2.5hrs running to get there. Burn a lot of fuel though.

Heatons is the range I am comfortable with my current boat, Go Heatons :)

  16. What are you doing with all those rigged bait cages in that pic Pete?

we use them like mini teaser chains and clip them in front of the lures, sometimes we load them with bait for additional scent in the water

basically to make the spread noisy and distribute bits of pillie scent around the lures, so when the fish come up they are generally aggressive lashing out at the lures, plus it help to bring them into spread, the spread looks more like a school of fish

  17. Happy hooker is scent blazer lures

there must be a another Happy Hooker that has arrived on the scene, cause that's not us, my boat is actually Happy Hooker 2 anyway

I'll use the call sign "HH2 - Peter" from now on to avoid confusion
