    Beach Jew

I posted a similar question about this, advice I got bak was to walk further down the beach away from the rip that's pulling you across, or alternativly grab some star sinkers. These will help anchor your bait a bit better. I tried a star sinker the other night in a pretty nasty rip and the they worked a treat. Landed a couple of salmon. Only problem we ran into was getting distracted in conversation ad the tide was going out and the dam things ended up being so well anchored we couldn't being them in and ended up busting the lines. As far as jewies on the beach I've never caught one, always had high hopes though. Fresh bait, and bigger tides (1.5m+) seem to be the go from most of my research... Good luck! Hope to see a report for a big beach jewie soon!
  2. Excellent. Sounds like a good variety is going to be a factor in consistently finding the jewies. Having a mixed bag will help me match whatever is in the area that they'll be feeding on. With all the great help I have my fingers crossed that I'll have a report from the weekend of my first Jew. If not, stand by because it won't be too far away
  3. I have a feeling the gulp jerk shads I purchased may have been a little sketchy. They were a bit hard when I pulled them out yesterday and thought it was just a bigger lure but I felt some in a pack at a different store and they were a much softer "squishier" feel, which might explain the complete absence of any tail movement on the retrieve? Any thoughts? Going back out tomorrow and will grab another pack if it's worth it.
  4. Thanks mate, all about perseverance I think. Will keep at it and eventually get the formula right
  5. I think I got it sorted, problem with the way I hooked it on. As soon as I noticed it wasso obvious... Will give it another go tonight and won't miss the tide
  6. Cool beans so just had a flick, the swimmerz are a great lure! The problem I had was it kept slipping down the jig head for some reason, might have been the wrong ones or size...are they supposed to have the hook exposed under the lure? And I wasn't sure what the best action was on the jerk shad? Had no luck but I misread the times, looked at tomorrows so missed it completly haha
  7. Sorry meant to day braid. Got a 40 lb mono leader attached to the 7 inch and 30lb to the 4" lure
  8. Update on the lures! Purchased 4" swimmerz and 7" gulp jerk shads. Both in reasonably natural colours. Got some 20 of suffix mono to go with it so spooled up and ready to have another crack at it!! Thanks for the tips guys
  9. Sorry I can't be more help, I've only been out that way once and it wasn't for any fish. Good luck though!
  10. Great work ray! Looking forward to the action at the rocks in the summer, on the other hand I bet I'm not the only one so its going to be crowded. Just got back from a beach session at avoca with 2 nice salmon landed. Loving the cc life style!! Top work on making the 3000 milestone Gatts
  11. Plenty of big Yabbies in small dams if you know some of the people who own them...?
  12. Beauty! Thanks guys, thoughts confirmed that I needed something a bit bigger. I'll get down to a tackle shop and check all of these out!
  13. Hey guys, Tried looking for this info in a thread but couldn't find one so appologies if I have posted a pre existing topic. I wanted to find out what other guys/girls have had success on when it comes to jewfish and soft plastics. Right now my lure of choice is a gulp 3" minnow. It has delivered for me every time I've had a spin but never hooked a jewie on one. Will this get the job done for me? Or should I look at something else? And what's the best action for them? Slow retrieve this time a year? Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks in advance! Gatts
  14. Hey raiders! I think this is my first report, so here goes. Headed out to narara creek on the central coast on a fellow raiders recommendation (will respectfully not go into detail as it's a personal favorite of his). The plan was to get after my first Jew with some soft plastics and a set line with some mullet fillet. Got my set line out and on my first cast around some structure with the 3" grub minnow I got hit! Sadly didn't manage the hook up, and whatever it was was no jew, but a few more casts delivered. A perfect bait size Tailor had sacrificed himself as Jew bait! Waited a little while for slack water before putting a hook in him and tried catching a few more for the future. Same story, a few more bites, some hooks up but getting the spat out when the buggers took to the air. I kept up the casts and a keen eye on the set rod. Went with a slower retrieve on the sp and suddenly the rod keeled over! Adrenaline pumping and hoping that this was going to be it! A great fight on some light gear before the fish broke the surface. Not the jewie I had my heart set on but a 64cm flat head came out instead. I'd settle for a fish like that any day so I still left with a smile on my face even though nothing took off with the tailor on the set line. Hope it's a great weekend fishing for you all! Gatts
  15. Thanks stewy! I suspected that was the solution, my usual spot has a great hole where I've had most of my luck so haven't found much time during daylight hours to hunt out other gutters. But next time it gets me I'll start moving up/down the beach to find where it slows. I've heard the star sinkers are great and will invest in some. I'm not using a ball sinker, it's a weird shape, I think mostly used for reef fishing or something? Not ideal but gets the job done Gatts

  17. Hi all, Fishing for some advice off the beach if anyone can offer some. I've had some great success recently getting onto a few schools of salmon and even landing a big port Jackson off the beach. I've noticed however sometimes when I head out my line seems to end up going horrizontally across the beach and seems to be washing up on the shore. The swell will be similar to other days where I haven't found this problem and use the same rig. What can I do when this is happening, it's usually at night time so I can see the gutters/rips etc. Thanks in advance! Gatts

    Wind :/

I know!!! It's a killer, I want to go for a beach session at the local tonight but wind might make it ugly. Got out on Tuesday, perfect conditions and had one solid bite but dropped the fish, keen to get after whatever it was Hope the wind dies over the next few days
  19. Great fish mate! Spring/summer is looking promising. Seen a few reports with some kings here and there already!!
  20. Nice one mate, I also just update a spin out fit, didn't spend big but just wanted something that would do the job on the beaches, rocks and the eustries and would be fun to hook up to any fish. Got a mojiko 9ft dynatip with a shimano straidic 6000 reel. Took it for a whirl on the beach last night, sadly no bites but the rod/reel felt great! Much better than the general store special reel with a chunky surf rod from the 80s I've been using
  21. Yeah might do! Didn't find it too difficult with the salmon but the port Jackson had a bit of weight, would have been handy then!
  22. Haha thanks mate, she's a great girl, just my luck she likes fishing as much as me )
  23. Nice work! Mate, good to hear you're finding fish while still learning the area
  24. Thanks gav! Had a blast, how did you go with the blackies?
  25. That's exactly where we were ray. Good luck when you get out!!
