  1. Rumour has it the fish had a ball, but the boy was sacked from his job. geoff
  2. Personally I know 2 guys that have clocked up over 10 each over the last 6 months diver and they were all in the lake not the channel. They are there, just got to put in the hours. The guy you spoke to is probably either in the painting game or heavy fabrication (metal). Mind you on the right moon Ive seen over 20 boats out off bolton point (thats a hint). Geoff
  3. More info please smokin joe!! Geoff The Bar Non fishing topics Forum Led by: MODERATOR
  4. Greg, Im not sure in Sydney but here in Toronto we have dealers of both Trophy and BW with demo units permanently on the water. Geoff
  5. I saw some of theclamp-on type in stainless at go-fish when I was on my way through last week, $40 each from memory and they looked to be excellent quality. Geoff
  6. Caught this fella under Fennel bay bridge at around 11.00 at night a year and a half ago Diver1, caught on a 130 MM squidgy fish in frostbite colour. I was flicking the plastic along the shadow line from the lights above the bridge, had been at it for 3 hours with nothing when I picked it up. Cheers Geoff
  7. Fantastic Job pegasus, looks a million dollars mate. Thanks for posting this, Im sure many will get remotivated to working on the boats in thier back yards. GT
  8. For the first newer crew members on strike to sleep we used to put a 10litre stainless bucket on the end of the line let out around 400 metres of line and hit the ratchet and stand back, keep the boat in gear and sit back quietly laughing. geoff
  9. For general smaller species (up to the 5-6kg mark, I cut the throat as soon as the fish hits the deck making sure to sever the spine thus eliminating any pain to the fish, the fish is then immedately gutted and put in a slurry of ice and saltwater. I have a baitboard on the port side of the boat (affectionately known as the alter) which has a drainage tube running over the side where the above takes place this leaves the boat clean and the mess gets washed straight out with a bucket of seawater. Geoff
  10. Micren, as a carey bay resident I can say that the bay is a bugger of a spot for landbased fishing as it is very weedy, Even worse in winter when the flathead are a little quiet. The bream have been very active lately though so perhaps you should be flicking a prawn out around the moored boats and dont be afraid to flick the soft plastics under your own jetty too, there are some cracker bream under your own feet quite often. Cant beat the 4" turtle back worms in Pumpkinseed for the plastics, I usually cut them down to about 2" long and have found that this improves the hook up rate. Drop me a Pm a bit closer to the long weekend and Ill let you know whats biting. Cheers geoff
  11. Interesting mariner, I guess the conditions in PNG are more slop than chop if that makes sense, I must say though that I have never felt unsafe in the longboats though, I know that some have gone down in the Islands but were generally way overloaded. geoff
  12. Pelican, freeboard can be overated (now that should get some bites) I have owned and fished out of long boats (banana boats) for many years and in PNG it was not uncommon for us to head out 40+ miles into the Huon Gulf in these rigs looking for Yellow Fin and Beakies and never a problem that would have not been had with most other rigs, Whilst they may not have excessive freeboard they are extremely bouyant and rise and fall easily with the sea and due to the hull shape when on the plane your bow should be about 3-4ft above the water which lends the boats extremely well to light bar work, the critical factor is to have adequate power for the rig (minimum of 40hp on a 19ft boat, ideally 50). This will allow the boat to get out of trouble when required, The boat in the picture below was equipped with 120L fuel, outriggers, 100litre livewell, and we frequently went out with 3 people. Cheers Geoff
  13. Not sure how much you want to spend, but the "andaman hooker" has an awesome reputation for sailies, well worth an email to Uwe. I didnt see much tackle over there though and what was there was way overpriced at any rate. http://phuket-sport-fishing.com/ GT
  14. The information on the full card is exactly the same as the local maps Kel, just more of it. The pricing is setup to encourage people to buy the full version as opposed to the local maps. GT
  15. Witches hats are permitted and there are plenty of crabs around at the moment, Tailor are running hot in the lake between Coal pnt, Fishing pnt and wangi Point. Bream are also about around the private jetties and most weedy areas off the prominant headlands and points, A 12kg Cobia was hooked and landed just over a week ago at the dropover where the channel meets the lake but I wouldnt expect that to happen too regularly. Well worth throwing the boat in at the moment provided this weather eases up. Geoff
  16. Funnily enough Peter Sharp (sharpey) is also a die hard game fisho, people who have worked up there will understand the ad, there are very few weeks that go by in PNG without a minor tribal war in the workplace or the local provincial government employees trying to unofficially increase there salaries. Geoff
  17. Youngy, the North east corner of Moon Island generally holds kingies but must be approached with caution as there is a beast of a bommie there where the water practically stands on end. You can also troll down the coast in close from swansea to Norah head as nearly all these ledges are known to hold them too, this time of year you may also hook up Bonito and frigate. I cant stress the importance of having someone experienced on board for the first few trips though until you feel comfortable at both negotiatng bars and trolling in close. Ill be out of town for a couple of weeks but you are welcome to jump on with me when I get back for a trip down to around catho. Some smaller kings have been caught very recently under swansea bridge on poppers, just be there at dawn and be prepared to stand your ground against the other anglers. Geoff
  18. Honestly hoody at the moment I would steer clear of the harbour due to all the crap being stirred up by the dredging for the new coal loader, stockton beach behind the hospital has had some good gutters producing tailor, lizards and a jewy might be on the cards as well with beach worms. otherwise most beaches might be worth a flick or you can head down to swansea channel or one of the beaches near there. GT
  19. If you are bored over the long weekend come to "trona" for a gander at some classic boats, last year there were around 140 vessels ranging from 8' dinghies to 60 foot classic yachts, no entry charge and there are a stack of eateries and cafes in the near vicinity to eat at. the highlight last year were a couple of classic Chriscrafts from the USA, all timber built and the brightwork had to be seen to be believed. http://www.heritageafloat.com.au/ cheers Geoff
  20. You are right scienceman, it is a lovely spot and the shallows there make it an ideal spot for the young ones too, not too far from civilisation either when supplies or a pre-cooked meal are required, thanks for the report. geoff
  21. My wife and I have a large parcel of land in PNG, at a place called Wagawaga in Milne bay province where she is from, the land is right on a magnificent penninsula from where we have caught Cobia and trevs just spinning from the land, As this is where we plan to retire, my ashes can be put anywhere there. GT
  22. plenty of squid between the bridge and breakwalls, hence the kingys Geoff
  23. Gday Jim, at the moment the channel (from the dropover to the bridge) is giving up lots of lizards on the last 2 hours of the runout, on the drift with practically any bait. There have also been kings at the bridge and lots of Bonito out around Moon island. Water inside the lake has been filthy and has quitened things down a bit though. Enjoy your stay mate. Geoff
  24. I was gonna ask the same question, and he will need some form of cover to hide in or will stress out and croak real quick. geoff
  25. Ive recently been looking at this myself as in the last 2 years Ive spent in the vicinity of $950 in batteries plus the initial cost of the bowmount, switching gear, anderson clips, quick release etc etc. I mainly troll and currently just let the bowmount pull the boat and steer from the main engine. The cost of a Suzi 2.5 HP 4-stroke is around $1200 and comes standard with a 4.5" pitch prop so trolling speeds of 1.5-6knots would be achievable. Weight is only around 12kgs (around 1/3 the weight of a leccy and (single) battery) and as it would be rear mounted would only be used as a pusher unit wile steering would still take place from the main engine. I would like to hear how noisy the little suzi is though, funny thing is though ive caught as many fish on the 60hp 2 stroke as I have on the leccy but after an hour or so the 60 does get a bit asthmatic. CHEERS gEOFF
